Hey ROOsters, my girlfriend and I will be coming down to the farm again these year (first time was 09)
Anyway, we're driving from NJ, and last time we just made a bee-line straight for Manchester. This year we'll have more time to take it easy on the way, and I was wondering if anybody knows of any cool sights or stops on the way?
We might be able to spend a night in Nashville, but I'd like to stop on the way and take in some of the country. Unfortunately, I have no idea where to start looking!
We'll probably just be taking I-81 most of the way, but if you want to get a sense of our route, search for New Brunswick NJ to Manchester TN on google maps.
Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
If you have not done it yet- take the time to travel sky line drive. We took our young adults last year and they were really impressed with the scenery and the wildlife. (We leave from RI.) Got some fabulous photo's. Been lurking for years. While I so look forward to Jess's posts i suspect he might be a little jaded. : )

Well like I said one of our members who drives down from NYC has always recommended stopping there. I did not mean it in a smartass fashion. Though I have not been myself, I have a feeling going to Natural Bridge in any way is well worth it though.
If you are driving down I-81 through VA and you don't stop here you are making a big mistake
It's about 5-10 mins from exit 180. And there's always been other Bonnaroo bound peeps there too, whenever I've I stopped. Foamhenge is just plain awesome ;D

a couple of friends and I are heading down from queens. We are leaving wed morning at 8 am. we were planning on stopping in natural bridge VA. If anyone is down to caravan with us, you're more than welcome.
Do any of you use the Road Ninja app? I love it. It lets you know about upcoming attractions on your route. It gives you a list of places to eat and gas prices at all upcoming exits. It also has traffic alerts and police presence detections.

Yea the lady and I have been debating about picking up the blueridge parkway in No Va and riding it all the way to asheville (staying in asheville prior to roo). Adds a little under 2 hours to our total trip time but may be worth it. Anyone done this on the way to roo or otherwise?

Im not one for sight seeing, but stay away from D.C. rush hour traffic at all cost. It can add 2 hours to a trip easy.

Yeah - and rush hour is approximately 6am to 7pm. Best bet is to head west on 66 to 81 instead of going all the way down 95 to 64. Coming from the North plan to hit DC area around 10am and you can still be in Manchester by 8 or 9 if there's no construction on 66W.

It. Is. So. Freaking. GORGEOUS. The minute I got there, I instantly regretted only giving myself a day at Shenandoah Crossing. You can rent a yurt, and ride horses, and swim in the lake...it was just astoundingly beautiful (and it was cheap when I went, I think I got a room for $99 on Hotels.com). I'd guess anywhere along that route will be similarly lovely.
One note, there can be a surprising lack of services (especially after 7 or 8pm) once you leave the highway, at least where I was in VA. So gas up and assume you can't get food or drink during off hours...this bit me at one point.

It is an UNGODLY NIGHTMARE. They had night-time construction and our friends from Maine literally did not move from one spot for over three hours. That was at one in the morning. I suggest taking 76 over to Harrisburg or 70 over to Hagerstown. It only adds a couple of miles to your trip, but it will literally save you hours unless you plan on driving through DC at three in the morning. F*cking horrible city.

Really? Are you in DC proper or out in VA or MD? I was in VA and I worked in MD. Trying to get across the American Legion Bridge was awful. They were doing that construction on the Silver Line, so that slowed down traffic on the VA side. And if there was any kind of accident (which there usually was), traffic came to a stand-still across the bridge, all the way up to where 270 hit the beltway. I left work two hours early (2pm) to get to class at George Mason and got stuck there at the bridge. I sat in one place for three hours and didn't move. I ended up being late for class at four by over an hour. That was a pretty regular occurrence for me. I finally just started taking the beltway going the other way around the city. It added 30 miles each way, but ended up being faster most of the time.
There was another time I had food poisoning and I was in traffic on 495 by Alexandria. We were in the left lane and I kept telling my husband to pull over because I was going to be sick, but traffic was so bad, even at 11pm, that he couldn't get over. I ended up getting sick out the window and it got all over the car behind us. So yeah, if you're a BMW driver that got vomit all over his windshield, sorry about that.
Oh, and we got pounded during that Snowmageddon snowstorm. We heard the snow was going to be there at midnight, so we left for Florida at seven to miss the bad weather. We were stuck on I-95 south for so long that six inches of snow managed to fall while we were waiting. We literally plowed through it in a lowered Audi A4. At least we had all-wheel drive! Believe me, I spent more time IN traffic in that city than OUT of it!
Silver Line (and 495 Express Lanes) construction has gotten better here in VA, from what I can tell. I avoid rush hour if I can, but sometimes it can really suck. I use the Waze app to help see if there's traffic on my route like an accident on 495 and whatnot. Also listen to WTOP for traffic on the 8s if I'm on a time crunch at all (I drive on the Beltway to River Rd a few times a week usually but it's at 3pm)
I think it totally depends on time of day and luck with accidents (and construction can reeeeally suck if they're closing any lanes and whatnot)
I assume many people can make it over to I-81 without going south of DC on 95 (unless you're south of DC to start). I'm glad I don't use I-95 south cause that always seems to have stuff goin on, especially weekends and rush hour and whatnot. I've seen it both good and bad there, so I definitely turn on Waze and reroute to Prince William Pkwy or something if it's better. (like last weekend I went to Richmond and saved us 1.5 hours to reroute around reeeally bad 20+ mile traffic from an accident i think). SOOO happy I had Waze and didn't just stick with I-95 since that's the simplest route I'd know off the top of my head...
I'm in the same boat as you - my friends and I want to stop at a few cool places on the way down from Jersey. I've never driven my car this far before so I'm nervous planning it all out. Anyway this site I found might be helpful for other people who might be interested in swimming holes along the paths they are driving - I'm using it right now to try to find a good one, but there are so many options and I'm not sure which state would be best to stop in and at what time of the day. I'm leaning towards Maryland/Virginia but maybe southern border of PA.
