This is our first roo and there's about 10 of us taking an RV down from NY. Since none of us have been before I think we could be sleeping in a portapotty and still think it's the best time ever, so where specifically we're parked isn't a big issue. We're just concerned what time we should leave. We're estimating a 16-17 hour drive and after that we'd like to avoid the long lines to get in. Originally I was thinking arriving around 6 am would be fine but after reading some of these threads I'm thinking maybe that's prime time. We really could arrive late Wednesday-midnight, when do they start letting people set up?
Also, are there different lines for RVs vs cars/tents?
The time you arrive will have minimal effect on where you park if you bring an RV. Most RV camp sites are a decent distance from Centeroo (see the Bonnaroo map) and there are only a few to begin with. The farthest RV camp is considerably closer that the farthest tent camping areas. However, the time you arrive has a lot to do with how long you will be waiting.
I came from New York last year (southern NY - an hour from NYC) and I will tell you this, plan on more than 16-17 hours if you are coming from where I came from or further. An RV on the highway is only going to move so fast and with a big traveling party assume plenty of stops for bathroom breaks - you don't want someone doing #2 in the RV toilet and you don't want a guy in your group peeing in the moving RV. Plus, even though the RV gas tank is huge, most RV's get 8-12 miles per gallon. So you will be stopping for gas more than you might expect. Plan 20 hours out (remember you will gain an hour traveling to the Central Time Zone). I recommend you get to the festival before 6am on Thursday. Anything after than you are playing with fire. Thus, I recommend leaving no later than noon on Wednesday (I'm making assumptions as to where in NY you are leaving from, but plan according).
I guess a good rule of thumbs is to go on mapquest, see how many miles the trip is to Manchester (don't even look at the hours) and divide by 40-50 miles per hour to determine how many hours it may take. This factors in your driver driving 50-70 on the highways and bathroom/gas stops. Factor more time if you take a lot of back roads.
As for your other questions; you can set up once you get in and there are not separate lines for cars and RVs until the very end of the line when you are entering and they designate you to drive to the RV camp area. You will be waiting in line with everyone. Let me know what else you need. I learned very well on the fly last year in terms of the RV itself, traveling from NY, and even RV info when I was at the site.
