Hi all,
I'm a roobie in 2011. I've been wanting to go to the farm for years and I'm finally going to make it happen this year. Please know I'm only starting this thread after extensive searching for infomation on this specific topic. I've found TONS of useful tips on many other topics, but not this one.
So, my question is this --> do I need to buy an RV pass to camp with a VW Westy? I'm sure there has to be a ton of Westies there every year so I'd like to from the VW owners, and other experienced roosters, out there.

from bonnaroo's site:
"An RV is defined as any vehicle larger either in length, width or height than a normal 15-passenger van. All oversized vehicles, trailers, campers that are towed, and busses are considered RVs. "

I actually sent them an email about this exact subject. They tell me a VW does not qualify as an RV and therefore should be parked in GA camping, not RV camping.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

Thanks all! I was hoping that was the case but I wanted to make sure before heading south. I've read driving a bus or vanagon is a one way ticket to a full vehicle search. Is that true?

My main concern would be driving TO Bonnaroo. Law enforcement agencies in the area (even remote area) are well aware of the fest and they do stop and request to search vehicles they suspect are headed to the farm. Unfortunately, a VW is still seen as a "corn lovin' hippie mobile", so this could pose a problem.

Thanks, I'm hoping the illegal searches don't begin until I hit a 50-100 mile radius of the farm but I will be ready as soon as I'm south of the Mason-Dixon!
Caravaning sounds like a good idea. Where do most people stage/camp the night before? I was reading a thread about camping at the local Walmart Wednesday night.

The place they tend to hit the most is the borders as you are heading into Tennessee. A lot of states like to try and get a piece of the Bonnaroo money. Now that being said unless you hit a checkpoint (unlikely) that is doing random searches it is real easy not to get pulled over.
1 Do not speed, they can not pull you over for doing 65, which is hard enough in one of these things. However be cognizant of the speed limit. they do like to get you right as it changes.
2 If you see a cop on the shoulder with his lights on either get in the left/middle lane, or slow way the hell down (45-50) as you pass them. In most states this is a pull over offense now, and they like to keep there lights on behind abandoned cars to catch people.
3 Seatbelts, seatbelts, seatbelts. Also at least for TN right now, DO NOT text or fiddle with a smartphone while you are driving.
4 Do not eat any corn at all on the drive, it is rough for some people I know, but there will be plenty of time for all that when you get there.
If you do get pulled over. Go ahead and have your registration and insurance in a easy to reach spot, and be respectful. Asking a officer "Why are you hassling me man" is not a recipe for success. If you are pulled over by an officer with a canine they will search you. However they can not make you wait while they bring dogs. The golden phrase is
"I am in hurry to get to my destination officer, am I being detained or am I free to go?"
If they make you wait just keep your cool, you will still need a lawyer if you get caught, but odds are he will be able to get it dismissed unless they can smell corn on you. Good luck and safe travels!!!

we had a caravan of about 5 cars in some pretty decent traffic as we got closer to manchester. trying to stay together, we were following each other pretty close. the car in front of us got pulled over for "following too close" and then asked to search the car. the driver gave permission.
although they only found a grinder, why she gave permission is beyond me. I am always prepared to say "I'm sorry officer, but I don't consent to any searches"
I guess two points: 1) they will pull you over for anything if they want to and might ask to search, even for a relatively minor traffic offense, so be prepared 2) yes, you can bring your westy haha
We could all caravan in together and then they wouldn't be able to decide which one of us to pull over first and would therefore leave us be.
get one of those black Pontiac Trans Am driving things, aka a blocker, like a designated drunk driver-the sober guy who stumbles out of the bar at closing. He fumbles his keys and drives erratically out of the parking lot, right past the cops, they follow him, cops gone, all the drunks leave the bar, cops come back after pulling over a sober guy, all the drunks gone. So find someone clean, to be your Bandit, your distraction, and bring extra hippie corn for me ;D

East bound and down, loaded up and truckin', we're gonna do what they say can't be done. We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there. I'm east bound, just watch ol' "Bandit" run.....
