Like many music lovers, I like to dabble in making music of my own. Is it a smart idea to bring my nice guitar? I know that the sweltering heat that I have read about could cause problems, and the fact that it was pretty expensive makes me apprehensive about leaving it in the tent. I have a less expensive guitar that I could bring instead if either of these things are a problem.
I guess I should also ask, do many people even bring instruments, or should I leave it at home?
Personally I would not bring it. Our first year we brought too much. Between food, beer, games and all that kind of stuff we really did not have the time to enjoy it.
There is so much going on from noon until the next morning that there was no time to hang around camp and do the things you would normally do when camping.
Again, personally if you want to hang around camp and play guitar and drink beer then go camping. If you go to Bonnaroo then enjoy all what is to offer..
Yes! Bring the cheap guitar! Mornings are always super lazy for our camp and one guy brings his camp guitar, another a set of bongos. Nice way to ease into the day.
And then one year, we camped next to a group of guys who also brought guitars and bongos and we had a little jam session.

This is my first 'Roo, but I've been a touring musician for a long time... I wouldn't bring the expensive guitar. The heat factor alone is likely to kill it, whether its in the car or not. I don't even wanna think about what 100+ degree temps would do to your finish....oh, the pain!
That said, if you can swing the expense and you go to a lot of festivals, maybe consider a backpacking guitar. Martin makes one that has surprisingly good tone, at least I thought so. By most accounts its pretty durable, too...and its small enough that you could probably hide it with your gear and theft risk would be reduced.
If you do decide to bring a musical instrument, please be courteous of your camping neighbors. As much as you may enjoy attempting to play the saxophone at 2am on Monday morning, your neighbors, that are only 10 feet away in their tent, would probably rather sleep.
Awesome, I appreciate all the replies and I think I'll bring the cheap one. There's no way I could be away from an instrument for that long while I'm in such a musical atmosphere.

Please don't bring an instrument. I know where you're coming from, I'm gonna hate having to be away from my instruments for the week that I'm going to be away from home. But I have no idea on gauging how good you are, and we all know how much it sucks to be forced to listen to a bad musician. Kids that only know the basic G maj, C maj, and D maj chords litter the halls at my school, and it annoys me to shreds having to listen to what are basically different variation of "Time of Your Life" or "Wonderwall." I'm not saying that you're an awful musician. Actually you've made yourself seem as though you're pretty good. But we're going to be surrounded by music all day, when people go back to their camps, I don't think that they're going to want to listen to "That guy" fiddle around on his acoustic guitar. Nobody likes being forced to listen to music that they don't want to hear, especially around their living areas. Also, I heard that you're not allowed to, or that it's discouraged to bring your own instruments into Bonnaroo. Although I'm probably mistaken on that one.

Yes, our friend has what he calls a "camp guitar" which he has had sparklers stuck in on the 4th, drank beer out of it, it's covered with stickers. That kind of instrument is the type to bring to Bonnaroo considering the weather and the chance for theft and damage.
Last year our friend didn't bring his guitar, and we all missed it.

dude, you sound like a dick head. I think he should bring his cheap guitar and play the shit out of it. How do you think beginner musicians get better? I love listening to someone who my not know what they are doing, but is having the time of their life playing and trying to figure it out. There is something special in that. If you dont want to hear someone's music, you can always go elsewhere. Bonnaroo is a big place.
Cheap one it is! I feel as if I must defend myself... I am fairly accomplished in my pursuit of the beautiful thing we call music and I think it would be wonderful to share the experience with those around me. I feel terribly immodest by saying that, but the interweb provides me with enough anonymity to indulge a bit.

You can't avoid it if it's right by your camp. I don't know if you ever saw the movie "Role Models," but if you did then you probably remember the scene where Paul Rudd makes the comment about "that guy" on camping trips who tries to play Kumbayah but can't quite get the chords right. That's basically what I think it's gonna be like if people bring their guitars. Maybe not Kumbayah, but you get the picture.
I totally disagree. Bonnaroo is a place to express yourself and if that means you fumble a little on the guitar, or drop your hula hoop a lot or end up with some weird smear when you try a new body paint design, it's okay - it's all in the spirit of the festival.
i brought my guitar our first year but not last year....i only played it a couple times the first time cause we werent at camp a lot but i say whoever want to bring an instrument let them....roo is about music whether its on the stage or at ur camp...ROCK ON!!!!

i don't mind any instrument at Roo except a djembe... the only reason you should bring a djembe to Roo is to have a flat, semi-portable surface. and no one gets a small djembe (like a darabuka), no they get the 18" that allows a very white dis-rhythmic version of "burn one down" to broadcast itself for what seems to be miles around.
I've been considering this as well and glad the question was asked. Don't they have an area in centeroo where you can play instruments? I was thinking that may be enough to get a fix and not have to have a guitar to worry about.
I fiddled around with my guitar Friday morning last year. Most of my neighbors seemed to enjoy it. One of them started singing some Chili Peppers with me. Then Saturday evening we went back for a break and a guy had a guitar out, so I jammed with him for a bit. I'm definitely glad I brought it, but I'm also glad it was low on my priority list. This year I might bring my Martin Backpacker, I have the one mizvalentine mentioned. It's very nice, but if you jam you'll get drowned out by a full size guitar.
I'd say bring it, but don't necessarily plan on playing it.
Say hey johnny boy, the battle call United we stand, divided we fall Together we are what we can't be alone We came to this country you made it our home

Please refrain, if possible. Plenty of pros on real stages. Especially true, if you plan on doing Dave Matthews karaoke at 5am. Could be some Smashing!
