Alright, so there is a large group of us going (8 or so) and of course, as always, I'm the one trying to plan all this. That being said, I am dealign with a bunch of people that are still trying to buy tickets / not really thinking about Bonnaroo right now (I mean yeah, it's 3 months away, but C'MON!!!) so I have decided to try and figure out what would be best.
- Driving down, in our own cars, and staying on our allotted land (would be 2 cars so 2 spots). How much does this cost?
- Driving down in 1 RV, buying an RV pass, and paying the cost of RV renatls from NY
- Renting a RV from Bonnaroo ($3800 eeeeek)
Honestly, I am almost thinking of just going the tenting route just because of simplicity...
Unless you can get unlimited miles from your RV rental, bringing an RV down from NY is not cost efficient. I came down from Southern NY last year, but picked up an RV in Maryland. At this point in the game you will have a hard time finding a rental RV in TN and surrounding states for Bonnaroo week. As one RV dealer told me, Bonnaroo is their "Super Bowl". I would hit up Craigslist for an RV being rented by a family that can give you unlimited or cheap miles. Last year, I got $0.12 a mile on my RV rental but it was a real dump. This year I planned ahead and booked in early January and got unlimited miles, but I paid a lot extra on the rental for a nicer vehicle.
Renting an RV from Bonnaroo doesn't seem worth the price, but I never did it. However, most people on this forum will probably say the same thing.
As for bringing two cars onto the grounds, it seems as if you are trying to avoid sleeping in a tent. Just keep in mind if you sleep in your car and run the AC all night you will go through a good amount of gas.
No no, I just meant 2 cars so we could get 2 camping spot, we would most definitely sleep in the tents I can handle the heat. I was just wondering if an RV was worth it, or if we should just get a huge tent, reflective tarp, and an EZup and make a cave.
If we bring 2 cars down, do we get 2 spots next to each other?
Also, what time are cars/tenter's allowed to come in and set up?
RV rentals onsite have a decent location. Our experience with this was horrible. However the Roo site says they have over hauled the way they do this. Hope so. We will not take that risk.
Bring your RV.. we are also a larger group ages 20-58. Did the RV from RI last year. Very pricey on gas and milage. Brought the tent for the die hard campers. It never came out of the storage hold. The heat was brutal and everyone opted for the A/C. I was surprised to be shut out of rentals at the end of december. However did some more sleuthing and found a nice place in KY to pick up. We'll leave the car there and do the last couple of hours in the RV. We will still be bringing our EZ ups for the outside hang area. The big upside to the RV is you can hit Walmart and Boozemart on the way and get plenty of crucial supplies that will not fit in an average car with gear. If you do a rental, make sure you surf on 'xyz company' rental complaints. There are companies that handle private party rentals and from the reading you can get ditched last minute and have no rv.
Tents... Middle aged female... TN heat.. No A/C to cool down = no go.

From my personal experience:
-Myself and 4-5 people have done RV the past 3 years. We've always ended up finding one from a friend for pretty cheap and without paying for miles, but it looks like that's not gonna happen this year. I tried looking for rentals close to TN from A BUNCH of companies and there's nothing that's in my way at least. Also, the miles is a big issue.
It's comfortable, but also very expensive, and if there are 8 of you you'll need a BIG RV which will drive up the price. At $450 per person (assuming all 8 of you go) the 'roo rental sounds expensive, especially if you take into account the amount of money you'll spend on gas getting to 'roo (depending on your car I wouldn't put it under $100 pp)... Also, you DO need a parking pass ($150) for your RV, $180 if you have an accompanying car. If while at bonnaroo you run out of water in your RV you'll have to pay around $50 to have it re-filled. All these things add up.
- This year we're most likely gonna tent it up. I don't wanna put the 1800-mile strain on my car, so I'm gonna rent a car from Wednesday to Monday from Miami. The miles are unlimited and it comes out to around $300 split 4 ways. Once there we can sleep in a tent and we should be fine. Parking your car where you'll pitch your tent costs NOTHING, compared to the $150 RV parking pass.
It's up to you, but just remember that not all 7 of your friends might have $1000 to spend on a vacation (ticket price + RV + supplies and money spent at 'roo).
I think tent is the way to go if you're coming a long way and want to save some cash . Good luck!
Exactly the post I was looking for guitarhero. I was leaning towards camping and I think you just made it seem much more efficient. Now, off to look for an EZup and some reflective tarp..

just to add my 2 cents a good nights sleep in an rv destroys tent living in my book, but I am a city guy at heart...good luck and post pics of the trip when you get back
