Alright everyone, this June will mark my second roo. I went back in '09 and wish I could have been at Roo 2010. I am sort of having a dilemma...I can't decide if I want to go out and buy a tent or just buy an EZ-up and a cot. This year I will be camping next to some friends, but I will be driving separate, with my own belongings. I've seen some members around here saying that they hate sleeping in tents due to heat and whatnot...So, I've been considering scrapping the tent and just sleeping on a cot under an EZ-up (with tarps, tapestries, and sheets on the sides for shade and privacy). What are your thoughts on this? Have you done it? Would you do it? What are the pros and cons? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Tents are hot. If you do get a tent get some tarps (JR talking about tarps again) and a canopy to put over your tent. Put the tarp on the east/southeast side. The canopy and tarps will keep your tent from taking all the morning sunlight head on.
I'll be on a cot under a canopy with tarps and a battery powered fan.

As long as you are protected from potential rain you should be fine. Most people get out of their tents and go back to sleep under some shade anyway. Thurs nite 09 rainstorm got me good tho, in the wind one of my tarps came undone. Got soaked. Thoroughly.
I've only gone one year out of 5 without a tent. In 08, I slept in my car most of the time, as my old Camry had a nice, spacious back seat. I'd roll down the window and put out my feet, if it was getting hot, then if it would rain I'd feel it on my feet and roll up the window. I got some of the best sleep in my history at Bonnaroo, that year. Namely Friday night: After walking back from that shit-Superjam, I listened to the rest of MMJ at camp and went to bed. I didn't wake up until early in the afternoon the next day, and was thus disappointed to find out I had slept through the first half of Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings.

The impact the cicadas will have on Bonnaroo 2011 is yet to be seen. I would bring a tent unless you're a big fan of (potentially) loud, ugly bugs buzzing around while you try to catch some zzz's.
Oh god, cicadas are terrifying. I didn't even think about that...but I'm thinking I'm going to do what JR is doing and put tarps up on the sides just in case of rain and to block sunlight and i'll probably put one on the ground under the canopy too then sleep on a cot and get a fan.

^^ if your going with the ez up over a tent you need to have a tarp down under it. last year we did four ez ups with a 20 x20 tarp under. we have two people sleeping in a tent and the other six of us slept under the canopy we created with one 20x20 tarp over the top. obviously we have extra tarps should it rain but we usually just do a wall of dark sheets and tapestries to keep the sun out during the day, it lets air through and you going to want all the breeze you can get

I want to ditch the tent this year but the cicadas are a biiiiiig concern. I mean bugs still get in most tents, but a cot under an EZ up in the middle of a cicada swarm? Sheeeeeeeesh.

if your that worried about the cicadas and are considering the ez up route, there are screen inserts you can get to zip in. i have them but have yet to use them for anything... maybe they will finally be used this year

i've been looking on the cicadaroo thread, from what i have read the "event" is expected the beginning of May, they live about 30 days...we should be okay. Unless we're not...
If the cicadas are so bad you can not catch a nap without them crawling on you, having a tent is not really going to help that much. I always bring one for privacy to change and what not, but I usually sleep outside in a chair or on my thermarest. under the ez-up

^^ ive also been reading into this and i think i remember being slightly concerned about this in 08 for some reason but nothing much came of it...
There will be cicadas apparently but I have camped plenty of times during swarms. At night they sit in trees and fuck , while making noise (Kind of like wooks). Other than earplugs I am not to worried about it.
