I'm sure I'm not the only one who has seen or heard of this article recently. The blurb beneath the headline sums it up: How U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan murdered innocent civilians and mutilated their corpses – and how their officers failed to stop them. Plus: An exclusive look at the war crime photos censored by the Pentagon
I have always felt that the short term success in suppressing terrorist activity in both wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were going to inspire more terrorist recruitment and activity in the long run.
If I were living/growing up as a poor, uneducated, young male, with no plumbing or electricity, and hardly any means to make a living; And an imperialistic nation which holds religious and philosophical beliefs completely different then mine invaded my country started killing my innocent friends and family (whether accidental or on purpose), blowing up my villages and towns, and telling me how my countries government should be structured, and inserting their own government leaders aka "puppets"... well then I would be alllll to happy to join an organization that provided a way to earn a living and empowered me to fight back against the "evil" invaders.
This article only confirms my suspicions. For me the most revealing part was the direct quote from one of the soldiers who was commenting on killing innocent civilians and planting drop weapons to cover their ass: "This is the type of stuff that the Taliban likes to use against us and try to recruit people to fight against us"
I don't profit from the system. Don't care much for the people who do, either.
Like it or not, the system employs a huge workforce, has led to some important innovations (microwave, gps, and Internet started as a communications tool between government and military agencies), and it also has a surprisingly great union for its workers. The engineers at these places have great education and are paid very well for it. So it's a complicated issue. It doesn't excuse the fact we have to keep going to war to keep these companies going. Companies can reorganize as long as government gives them incentive do so. Putting it all on the companies is unfair and more importantly, won't get it accomplished. Suggestions on how the government can give incentives to make innovations in other ways. Instead of making combat fighters, improve designs for commercial aircraft. The people who make military satellites, how about innovations in telecommunications or media. Have arms companies work to improve NASA technology. Instead of creating biochemical weapons, find ways to create clean water and sell the technology to foreign governments. These are just suggestions of my own. Obviously, someone with more expertise can probably do a better job in illustrating this point. Also, it's important to maintain some military spending(but with a much smaller budget) so as to keep up to date with our domestic security against those who wish to harm the US. A smaller military budget can also be accomplished, if we just close some bases. We are spread way too much throughout the world and bringing our soldiers back home would bring a skilled work force and make the US more competitive in the globalized economy not to mention the good morale it brings when soldiers come back to family and loved ones.

So, I got this issue in the mail yesterday, read the article today.. I don't know, I was pretty shocked by how graphic the pictures were. It's really disgusting to me how long it went on before it was finally investigated and how it was basically common knowledge amongst the men that this was happening. Blehk
I wasn't shocked by this at all. I am pretty sure a select but significant group of your armed forces are doing much worse than this while on deployment.
A good number of the military are low income, poorly educated kids, trained to yes sir to whatever they are asked. They are annihilating people from miles away with long range artillery, see their friends get blown up right next to them, live in constant states of paranoia and fear that the same or worse will happen to them while they work on little to o sleep. What is happening here is nasty and should not be tolerated but its nothing new.

Thats the problem with counting on the military to "win the hearts and minds of the people" the military is supposed to be a destructive force filled with soldiers who don't think they just do as they're told and as they are trained. Can anyone say if they were under constant threat of danger they wouldn't grow to resent the locals either, especially when its so difficult to tell a civillian from terrorist?
I don't condone the actions of the soldiers but I can't honestly say I'm suprised either. A military needs clearly defined goals and enemies or shit like this happens. "Idle hands are the devils playground"
