Not a problem for us cuz we plug the powered speakers in to the RV's AC power. I haven't heard good things in the past about battery-powered speakers but maybe that's changed.

We had some with us in 2007. I'm sure I've probably had them with me since then but I don't remember using them. But I know we used them a lot in 2007. We just had the super cheap battery powered kind - two of us actually brought identical speakers in different colors. I've used those same speakers for plenty of other things too. I admit that I'm not remotely picky about my sound quality, but the little battery powered kind are always fine as far as I'm concerned.

i have a portable iHome that works pretty well.. not sure if it was the cheapest, but it serves good use. Not sure if I'll be able to bring it because if lack of room (I'm flying) and being nervous about leaving it unattended at the campsite
I personally love the Ion Block Rocker, but may be a bit big for Roo, unless your surrounding area within a quarter mile loves your music selection www.ionaudio.com/blockrocker Mine lasts at least a good 10 hrs at 75% + on a single charge.
Yeah, there pretty damn good for being just an amplifying tube speaker. Think, taking a paper towels inner cardboard tube and talking into it, it will project your voice louder with no extra effort. Same idea when the sound comes from the buds into the trunks. Plus no extra batteries and can be easily stored!
Also Uncrate is a amazing website of knowledge on great products. If they had it posted, it's worth it.
Usually would use the car audio, but last year, American Spirits sent me some speakers after signing up. I imagine if you got those, they would work well for just sitting in your tent.

Oh man, from the pictures it seems like you could rock out with some terrible karaoke! Do they all come with a mic? Also, most of my music is actually on my phone, as my ipod nano is a first generation from like 7 years ago, and hasn't likely been updated with music for 5. Is that compatible with the reg. 3.5mm plug in (like for headphones)?

They claim a dB level of 80, which would be pretty impressive. However, they aren't even being manufactured yet. It looks like they need 10,000 bucks in the next four days to continue their venture. Fortunately, they've gotten $66,000 so far:
That said, would they even be ready for people by 'roo time? I think it'd have to be shipped from Australia, so that'd add another week or two. Also, if you have to crank your mp3 player volume all the way up, it'll kill the battery on your mp3 player as well. But, you won't be throwing more batteries in the landfill, at least.
Back in '07 someone on here linked to a speaker jammy for an iPod from buy.com that was $9.99. White, had a cord but also ran on 4 AA batteries. I bought it and JUST replaced it this past fall because it finally died (stopped charging the iPod). Got a similar nicer/bigger one on Amazon for like $40. But really, that thing was PERFECT for Bonnaroo. About the size of a paperback novel (new one more the size of a hardback novel).
Really you can't have crazy loud great music at Roo because you can hear the stages, you have neighbors jive like close, so it's just overwhelming and rude. We have also often been camped near people who bring crazy systems, instruments, DJ tables etc. and it's silly to try to compete with live amplified music. A basic speaker for your iPod is usually plenty.

Have you used them yet? The volume is pretty minimal. I play my audio through my cell phone and I think the phone itself does a better job with volume. Still an awesome gesture from our friends at American Spirits.
I was lying in a burned out basement With the full moon in my eyes. I was hoping for replacement When the sun burst thru the sky. There was a band playing in my head And I felt like getting high.

I'm really interested in these Tembo Trunks but can't find them on eBay or Amazon. Does anyone actually have them that can vouch for their effectiveness?

well, based on this video, they don't sound very loud at all (music at 2:40).
We have something like this the BF got fo' free at work, they're OK. Linking several up together was louder, but didn't sound fantastic. Not horrible, either, though.
We have the Block Rocker too and LOVE it. I got it for hubby last year for our anniversary/father's day present (from Sam's Club) which was right before Roo and it worked great. We have gotten so much use out of it, it was definitely worth the $$. We've also used it at parties, tailgating, camping, in the backyard, at people's houses and we even used it at my brothers wedding where there were 150 guests. After my brother saw how awesome it was he said no way was he paying $500 for a DJ. He did up playlists and our cousin just mc'd the thing.
As for your neighbors at Roo listening to your music, ours were awesome and pretty much liked the same as us anyway and we had done up a Roo playlist so everybody was happy. We also let one of our neighbors put his iPod in and play stuff for awhile. We also never lost charge the whole weekend.
^ Does it still hold a full charge? I've been interested in that speaker for a while but I've read horror stories about gel batteries not being able to charge after they've sat around unused for a few months.
