Well.... i havent been lurking on this site since before i left. I got great info for my second trip down to the Roo. Thank you Inforoo for the great info.
I went in a RV for my first time. This was my second Bonnaroo since 04. I went with three newbies and one other returning champion. All of us, it was our first time doing it in a RV.
We arrived on Thursday about 8am (the time people here said to arrive) There was a little more traffic than we hoped for. they blocked the entrances on one side of the freeway so we had to travel 15 miles before they let us turn around. All in all we waiting in traffic for 2 hours. We were still happy.
Now.... Out of paranoia, we had nothing illegal with us. No drugs, no glass, no fireworks. I was thinking the RV search would be very harsh. IT WAS NOTHING. I young security chick came aboard, poked her head in a few cabinets and that was it. I kind of felt like a fool for talking all my buddies into not bringing anything, but still... no worries.
Our neighbors were great and nice. We decide to walk around and see what is out there. Lots of friendly people, that's what was out there.
Night one was a blast. We really wanted to see the Klezmers but we could not get in on time. Security was being super protective.. Got to see Sam Roberts band (who I never heard of before) and loved them. Saw Apollo Sunshine and LOVED THEM. Once again, never heard of them. Next was Tea Leaf Green... had a blast. Friends wanted to go back to camp site, fiance and I stuck around Centerroo and had a blast.
Day Two. More and more fun. Ran into random people I had not seen in years. Got to see Kyle Hollingsworth at the sonic stage and had a good cry. Got to meet him. Saw Brazillian Girls for the first time and loved them. Went over to Gillian Welch and was shocked to see JPJ come on stage. Then I notice standing to my left was Bill Nershi was the String Cheese Incident. That blew my mind and he was happy to take a photo with my fiance. My fiance and I were floored with excitement and ran back to the RV to giggle and giggle. Got ready for Tool and man, I NEVER thought I would rock out to something so heavy. I dug it. My buddy accidentially plowed into a guy and the poor guy stood there breathing heavy for a few minuites and ran off. My buddy apologized profusley and he said it was alright but you could tell this guy was not happy.
Next was SCI late night and I danced my ass off. It was the one reason I was so stoked for Bonnaroo this year, and it paid off.
I just realized I am rambling... I am going to get to my point. I was a little disappointed that this year pretty much put the band selection off the radar. I am a jam band guy. I am not that much into commercial acts. But the truth is, I learned about so much good new music. I went home and started to enjoy the albums to so many new bands that I got to see. I learned that sticking to what you know isnt always a great thing.
I also learned that more money the better. I blew so much money there but I don't care. It was what I planned on doing. I can't wait for next year!

I was hoping you were gonna go through all 4 days. I love hearing about it. This was my first time and I'm already missing that place so badly. I know everyone around me that didn't go is tired of hearing about it. Great to hear such positive stuff, hopefully I'll see you there next year.

I had to apologize to my best friend because this is the second time around she's had to hear about it, plus all the pre-excitement for this year. She said she didn't mind - she had a roommate that couldn't stop talking about it the year she went either, so that made me feel a bit better. I guess we all talk everyone's ears off

It is great to hear that someone actually enjoyed themselves - its amazing how good of a time you can have when you just stop trying to hate change, people different then you, music you don't have memorized beforehand, etc. I thought the vibes were excellent and I too had a great time. ;D

My roommate once said I split my year's conversation up between 2 things... "How great it's gonna be" and "How great it was..." so I appologized to him for being so obsessivly boring. Then he laughed and told me he wouldn't have it any other way from me, and in fact would be distraught if I stopped

I really like the way you put that. I had an absolute blast and it wasnt because of all the bands that I knew (Like SCI or Widespread which I was there to see and loved mined you) but because everything else. I mean the securtiy was a pain and some people were a porblem but youre gonna get that. I just got into the Flaming Lips and seeing most of that show was awsome. I never heard of The National and they were one of my favorite shows. Hot Tuna blew my mind along With Richard Thompson who me and my friend who went knew nothing about but just that he was good.
It is getting to know new things and reaffirming what you already know and love (which will always be there) that makes Roo great. But I cant speak for everyone. I had a blast but some people wont I guess (when you have 80k people, you'll get 80k opinions)

I'm with ya there - I've got to stop and check myself when I start talking about Bonnaroo with people who didn't go... I'd imagine they are nearly sick of it.

Ya know, that is one of the greatest things I took from Bonnaroo - the festival only lasts a few days, but the music you learn about and the memories of the people you meet and experiences you have will last a very long time. I didn't know much about John Butler Trio prior to Bonnaroo and after seeing them live and getting a few of the albums I am really impressed, the same with Cold War Kids and Gogol Bordello. Even if you take out all of the people including the undesirables mixed in with 75k pretty cool people you are left with a boatload of new music to check out through the next year and look forward to at the next Bonnaroo if they are there. If not, you learn about a whole new set of bands next year that you'd only heard in passing before that.

My recap is similar - saw "insert-artist-here" for the first time and loved them, saw "so-and-so" for the first time and loved him/her... I was unfamiliar with many of the bands at this year's Roo and I was just blown away by everyone I saw!

Superfly does do a hell of a job picking the artists - you wonder if they have a hard time getting everyone they want or they have way more to choose from then they can put on the bill or afford.

Yup, this year was amazing. I can tell people around me are sick of me talking about it constantly.. not to mention I still have my braclet on. So that starts up conversation pretty well.
And yessss that is one of the greatest parts of festivals like these... wandering around and watching/listening to things you never knew before.
Superfly really does a great job at picking good performing live acts!!! All this year were quite entertaining. I think this was my favorite weekend ever.
Thats one thing i do regret about this years roo, that i didnt see anyone that i really wasnt familiar with, i mean a band that i hadnt heard of or hadnt heard any of their music. i wasnt too familiar with Clutch and it was my buddy's birthday on thursday and his favorite band so i went with him and had a blast. Saw the flips and loved em as well.
Its just that i consider my bonnaroo time very precious and with so many of my favorite bands playing(SCI, Panic, Keller, Railroad Earth, Govt Mule to name a few) i planed my time to see the bands i wanted to and to sleep, with very little in between time. Next year will be different. if i dont goto 10klf.
oh one more thing i notice that whatever bands r touring that year previous to roo is who you will more than likely see...ie: Tool, Panic, Petty, Phil and Friends ect...you will hardly ever see a band at roo that is not touring.

Karma for your post - I must have overlooked it earlier, it sounds like you too managed to put out good vibes at Bonnaroo and got plenty in return.
On a not even remotely related note (thought of when you said Hot Tuna) - once like in 5th grade I went to school and about halfway to school I realized my backpack really stank, I mean bad. It smelled like rotten fish or something and I was like "what the f---"; probably more like "what the heck" cuz I was like 12. Anyways, I get to school and the whole day I stink like nasty rotten fish or something and I can't figure it out - it was bad enough that people were starting to comment, etc.. Eventually I get in the outside pocket of the bag for a pencil or something and I realize there is about a half pound of cat vomit in the bag... I found out later that one of my cats actually gorged itself on some sort of tuna flavored cat food then puked it all up in the open pocket on my bag that morning. I'm not sure I could go see Hot Tuna without thinking of that smell... it was a really foul stench.
