My friends an I are planning for our first trip to Bonnaroo and we came to a bit of a snag. Some of us don't want to carry our phones, so I was thinking perhaps we could use some cheap walkie talkies I have laying around.
Has anybody ever tried using walkie talkies at b-roo? How have they worked? Any other nifty communication tricks?

Not been to Bonnaroo yet, but we tried the long range walkie talkies on vacations and usually there are so many people on them they become annoying and not that much help. Best idea is a dry erase board at your camp, arrange meeting times.

This.
The dry erase board is an awesome idea. We just had a meeting spot inside centeroo (usually a coffee shop) and had pre-planned meet ups.
Someone in my group brought walkie talkies in 2007. I don't know much about walkie talkies, like if these were high quality or if she spent a lot on them, but the reception was great and they worked well. That said, they were not an effective communication tool when we actually needed them which was when a drunk friend wandered off at night and needed someone to come get him. He didn't know where he was, just that he could 'see the ferris wheel'. It took 2 hours to find him. What works best for us is to have set meeting places at the stages and tents where we wait for the first 10 minutes of a show so if you do want to meet up with someone from the group you have a chance. Also not letting drunk friends wander off alone even if they tell you they're just going to pee.
I recently bought a emergency radio made by Midland I believe its called "Midland Base camp" it has two way radio functionality and a bunch of other features that should be fun while sitting around base camp. The radio has allot of programmable private channels as well and it will work with other midland 2-way radios that are programmable. The Radio also has a winding arm thingy (it has a name, but I cant remember Edit: Dynamo is what its called) to charge the radio itself or to charge any usb charged device you plug in the front.

We got a pair of these a couple months ago, after our 15 year old Cobras finally died on us. I plan on bringing them regardless if we use them for the walkie talkie capabilities, as it also has NOAA on it, so we can keep our eyes out for what the weather's planning on doing.

my second year i brought walkie talkies and they were impossible to use to communicate with friends, but quite possibly the funniest thing to listen to. bringing a walkie talkie to Roo is like chat roulette without having to see so much penis.
A friend and I tried walkies last year. We were going with 2 different groups but we wanted to meet up. We were never able to get the walkies working well enough to hear each other. They were very cheap walkies but had a distance of a few miles. Perhaps higher quality walkies work better?
