From AP: The royal family has made a bold and controversial move: to genetically engineer the first child of Prince William and his new bride Kate. Rumor has it that they are in talks with a UK genetics firm to select the gender (male). Although surprising the family would go to these lengths, their preference of gender is hardly shocking. And one can only assume they will use this technology to reduce the possibility of genetic disease. These rumors are controversial enough, but that isn't the kicker! The royal family has decided to end centuries of indignity and finally rid them of a noxious burden: the new child's "poop" will no longer stink!
Dr. Stephen Brown of Cambridge University's School of Biological Sciences commented, "The technology used for genetic engineering is actually quite standard now. But the Human Genome Project's discovery of this particular gene took the biosciences community by complete surprise." Dr. Brown doubts the availability of the actual techniques to isolate and exploit the gene for the intended effect. "But it's likely the process will be available in the next 2 years."
Perhaps the royal newlyweds will be encouraged to use a good old fashioned rubber until then. A number of profilactic manufacturers have already approached the royal family for promotional rights. None have walked away with anything firm in hand.
Pamela Scharzmann, president of the social advocacy group "Care Now!" was reportedly appalled by this rumor. "It's a slap in the face! Once again the privileged wealthy benefit from a technology that the poor need most!" Calls for her resignation soon followed her unfortunate remarks.
