Yea you can rinse off in it. But after a day or two it turns into reddish brown muddy water, so you'd probably have better luck rinsing off in the troughs at the water stations.

It's actually the exact same water in terms of quality throughout the weekend. All that happens is that as the fountain runs longer, it stirs up the silt in the ground, and it picks up the color, sort of a brownish-red. But it's exactly the same quality as it is say, Thursday. Every year people think it's mud, or grime from people using it, but that's not true.
So yeah, feel free to strip down and scrub your grundle right there.
Is the fountain a continues feed of fresh water or is it recycled?
If it is recycled then regardless of the color it still has the run-off of thousands of dirty and muddy roo'ers.
According to Juggs it is not recycled. I don't really know either way.
But if the water is pulled from a well, the turbulence caused by pump suction would be enough agitate silt and debris making the water muddy. It's akin to lake water essential.

Not sure but it feels great when the temp hits 1000. Getting clean is not my primary goal - getting refreshed is. And I guess I don't get too skeeved by the fact that thousands of Rooers are doing the same. Just my perspective.
I'm pretty sure the water was pink after GWAR last year. I regard the fountain as a great way to cool off, but I wouldn't necessarily consider bathing in it "getting clean", per se.
Safe bet: by Saturday, start using troughs or swing the $7 for the showers.

From what we were told years ago (a group of us ran into a bunch of the techs at Bonnaroo back in...I think it was 2007?), it is recycled, but it's also filtered and re-added to the water supple. That is to say, they don't just dump 100 gallons into the fountain, hit "repeat" and let it run through the same stuff. And there are filters in the fountain for the water coming out which catches the dirt/silt/debris that gets pulled in, though the water still retains the brownish color after it's been running long enough.
Long story short, don't drink it, but feel free to get clean in it.
As an engineer allow me to geek out since I deal with these systems on a daily basis. What you're describing is a pretty standard system:
Water is pumped out of the fountain onto all the funky sweaty hippies, it then drains down through a trap/filter which removes most of the heavy particulates (sand, grass, etc) before draining into a tank/basin. Water is then pumped from the tank (it likely passes through a filter before it reaches the pump to remove any large particles the first trap missed) then back out through the fountain.
It is filtered yes, but only well enough to get rid of the larger particles which would build up as slag on pipe walls or damage the pump impellers over time significantly reducing pump life. Fresh water is added strictly as makeup water to account for water loss due to evaporation and other forms of water loss.
That is why the water gets muddier and funkier as the festival goes on. In order to filter out all particulate matter such that the fountain water remained crystal clear, you would need a large bank of expensive filters which would likely clog under the load. From a cost and maintenance stand point this would make no sense. The water is only filtered to mitigate clogging, and pump damage.
The fountain is necessary to cool off. People do lather, but I say it's better just to get wet and keep on walking. Shower? What shower?? Wipes you mean?
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

yoderoo, you rock! That diagram and explanation were extremely easy to comprehend. I'd always been curious how it worked. Now I know, and now I know to stay out of it other than Thursday, when it still runs clear.
No way I'm ever going in the fountain or even showering at Roo. Never have in 4 years. I'd rather be dirty and smelly from my own funk than from someone elses.

i've seen people washing ass crack in that thing.. there's no way i'm going in after thursday night. i don't want the pink eye fellas
Was considering this after reading of the filtering process, but people washing their ass cracks in it pretty much ensures that I will never, ever get in the fountain.

last year i remember this rather large lady in her 60's in a one piece just going to town in the fountain. moving stuff around so she could wash certain parts. was horrifying. and i'm sure she wasn't the only one
