I just got back from Hangout and it kicked my ass. By Sunday I could barely walk because my calves were giving out on me, and my body was screaming and giving me the finger. I just got back from a run and I plan on hitting the track hard this next couple weeks to prepare, but it got me wondering a lot about people's preparation for this fest.
I'm only 23 and in pretty good shape, but even for me all that walking takes a toll on my body...I can't imagine how it must be for you older Roo'ers. Gold Bond was my best friend last year...
I stay in shape all year, but I go on a six-week mini-cut right before Roo to shed whatever body fat I've gained during the winter. I try to get down to 7% or so.
But my wife just ran a marathon, so I suspect she'll be out-walking all of us this year.
I'm in much better shape than I was last year. I've lost about 30 pounds and my endurance has gone way up. By next year's festival season I hope to be down 20-30 more. I go to a gym but now that my pool is open I'll be swimming a lot too. Also hope to get in a couple of good hikes before Roo...if I can only get rid of this damn plantar fasciitis flare by Roo. No fun. I am on my feet a pretty good bit at work though, so I'm used to walking.

I said I was going to, but Hangout ended up being my workout/trial run.
We ended up walking 3.5 miles back to camp Friday night on top of the other walking we did that day. Calves were sore the next day, but I was relatively pain free through the rest of the festival and back to 100% today. Based on this weekend, I'm confident that Roo will be a breeze this year.
I turned to Under Armour boxerjocks a few years back... No chafing since. They fit tight and wick moisture away keeping the boys relatively cool and comfy all day.

I spend over 40 hours a week on my feet as part of my job, so I have that part covered, but good cardio health and stamina is critical for roo.
Also zenfnp, I have no real medical education, but I would think that the best way to clear up any plantar fasciitis issues by roo, would be to stay off it as much as possible, so you might want to skip out on the hikes.
^ She might not say it, but I think Zenfnp is a nurse. Either way, my workout started with beer ups, put a beer in this hand and curl it to your mouth, then switch hands, next we go to Kentucky bourbon cocktail curls, followed by Jello Shot squats, ending with some canibus corn crunches.

Scrog, we should let you head up the US olympic training team...lol.
seriously, though, I'm a medical person, so I have the foot thing covered. Lots of stretches, ibuprofen, and heel supports. I had bought a pair of shoes that I really liked that did not give the best support, and insisted on wearing them anyway to work....hence my problems. No room for vanity in my profession where the feet are concerned.
I try to get my liver and mind in shape by building my chemical endurance. As for physical endurance, Bonnaroo is an out of body experience so I don't bother. ;D

I have the perfect breathing exercise that Micheal Phelps inspired, it's an exercise to help the body do more, with less. It is called Keepthebonghit. and involves inhaling and holding that as long as you can. "Keep it, Keep it in. Don't give me back the hit, you better keep it in! Keep it in! Keep it, Keep it in! That hit is yours! You are the proud owner of a new green hit! it is yours. You better keep it! Keep it as long as you can! you own that hit! do not give it back. Keep it. 5,......4,......................3,....................................................... keep it in! Don't make me start over, 3,...............2,................................................. ..............................1 and exhale...", that is how my training sounds.
At work, I learned a long time ago, wear what is comfortable, because any night you could get some sh!t on your nice shoes and then what?
I've lost 40 pounds since November. I'm training for a marathon now in SC, so I've been running 5 days a week while the temperature gets closer to 90 daily. Hopefully I'll be ready for lots of sun, lots of walking, lots of cocktails and lots of music!
I try to get in shape every spring since I usually fall out of shape during the winter. But Definitely by Roo. Been running 10-15 miles a week, but its getting harder to do now that summer weather is really kicking in. It was 94 yesterday when I went for a short 3 mile run.

Frozen water bottles! As a fellow fasciitis sufferer I strongly encourage you to bring some extra to Roo so that you can roll your feet over them and the world is a much better place.

I try to keep in shape all year round, but I'm coming off a series of injuries and illnesses so I'm working back up to top fitness. I should be there by Roo if I can just get rid of 5 pounds I gained since January!!

I have lost 20 pounds since March in preparation for 'Roo. Been going to the gym, quit eating fast food, etc. Have a trip to Europe planned for July so I hope to lose another 10-15 by then.
But yeah, I always try to get in shape for Bonnaroo, otherwise it's a shock to the system.

I've lost 17 lbs since January and gained a lot of muscle mass from lifting. Been walking 2 miles every morning since March in my Roo shoes to get ready. I'm far from skinny but my legs are strong as hell so I think I'll be ok!
I think no matter how good a shape you're in, running or walking ahead of time is probably a good idea... I was biking and doing kettlebells and even so, when I started walking I felt it a little. Different helper muscle groups I guess.
I've got asthma, a full spinal fusion and two torn ACLs so I'm hoping all my parts hold together like I want them too...
I think we are good (I'm 40 and my Wife is 39). In May we had a week vacation where half of it was spent hiking in western Maryland 10+ miles a day or mountain biking 20+ miles a day. Then the other half was spent in New York City walking around and in the garden doing work.
I wear a pedometer and I walk well over 15,000 steps a day between work and home.
My Wife uses the elliptical machine or bicycles over one hour every day.
We do not have any problems with chafing nor do we need Gold Bond.

So here's my advice to people who want to get running:
1) Go to your local running store (Fleet Feet is a great one, The Athletes Foot is good, too). They will get you set up with the right shoes for your stride. Failure to get the right shoes will make you pay in injuries.
2) Start out slow and don't overdo it. Start with 5 minutes running, 5 minutes walking, repeat until tired. You can work up to more running and less walking (ex, 6 to 4) but do it gradually.
3) If you get injured, rest it. Don't push through an injury or it will plague you for a long time, possibly life.
4) Gear: Repeat after me...I WILL NOT RUN IN COTTON! Synthetic fabrics not only make you feel better, but you will chafe less and stay cooler. Technical shirts are a must, and running shorts with the built in liners are much more comfortable than boxers and basketball shorts. Most of all, always wear running specific socks. I love my wool running socks, but any non-cotton ones stand a good chance of giving you blisters.
So that's it...any other questions on running? No? Then get out there!

I will be tubing the guadalupe river the week before which will require drinking and some paddling. May take out my bike a few times just to build up endurance. Last year I lost almost 10 lbs. in 3 weeks during my Glastonbury trip just walking around Europe. That is my ideal workout.
1.drink more. 2. walk to the bar. 3. drink more. 4. i guess you could do that in the shoes you are wearing to roo but id prefer to just be too drunk to tell what shoes im wearing. 5. drink more 6. go camping/hiking a few times before roo (don't forget the beer on these trips, it's crucial) 7. forget that you quit smoking several months ago and smoke like a chimney for several months before roo. 8. don't forget to drink more

This is all good advice, but it also kind of discourages people from running. People have to do all of this before starting to run?
