IS it the same as the reflective one, I went to walmart and can only find silver. Will that do the trick in keeping the heat out, or is it a different tarp?
Yes. All silver tarp is considered reflective. Also, thickness is important. Silver tarp should be 11 or 12 mil, which is 11/1000 or 12/1000 of an inch. The cheap blue stuff is 6 mil. Sometimes you'll find this number on the packaging, sometimes not.
Be warned, your neighbors will not take kindly to an emergency blanket blinding / baking them. Don't be suprised if you return to camp and find it missing, or in a pile of ashes.
Double tarps work good if you allow an adequate and open barrier for ventilation allowing the hot air in between to move out with a breeze. I do this over my truck camper and it stays cool well into the morning (10-11am.)
Many canopies are hot very cool and actually let UV rays and heat through so a tarp over/under them is good, if difficult to rig. The key is to allow the air in the barrier to move and not be trapped, overheat and defeat the purpose.
Here's roughly how my canopy will be set up. I'll be using 2 silver tarps and 4 blue tarps. Should be a lot of airflow, and I put the silver on the inside for courtesy, it'd probably work better if I put the silver on the outside. Also, I plan to leave about a foot open at the bottom all around for more airflow.
great diagram! i was planning on doing about the same thing and putting my tent under it...i hope it works. my goal this year is to be more active at night so im gonna need all the sleep in the morning i can get...... however most of my roo-mates think im crazy =(
I have pretty much the same plan, but I think we're going to use more sheets/tapestries. We have a big Tarp that covers the entire East side of the "tee-pee" and wraps around 2-3 ft. on the North/South walls. I think that is enough reflective power (we're doing the double-tarp as well, but only on the East side), and the sheets/tapestries are better for air flow.
