hey guys, ive been lurking for a while and i just want some input on our campsite idea. i have read that tents in the Tennessee heat are like ovens so we are trying to avoid that as much as possible. we were thinking of not using a tent but instead just using a EZup with a tarp underneath so we dont have to sleep on the grass/mud or whatever. we were going to use cloths pins to hangup sheets or tarps on the side of our EZup to create a makeshift tent. would this be a bad idea? im a roo virgin and i dont consider myself a camper or an outdoors men. any and all input is welcome. the thing that i am most concerned about with this idea is if it rains, based on some vets experience, how would this setup do in the rain?

You would really need cots to be able to do that. The ground isn't super comfortable to sleep on - last year the grass was so overgrown at our campsite, it did NOT make a comfortable bed. I was sleeping on top of a sleeping bag so I had a little padding and I still ended up bruised from the lumpy ground. And even beyond comfort, it would be impossible to keep from tracking dirt and grass and stuff all over your tarp...you would end up sleeping in dirt even if there wasn't a drop of moisture around. And if it rains? Forget it. Everything will be soaked and muddy and awful.
Ditch the tarp and bring cots if you really want to try this. Even with a cot, I'm not sure how well it would work out with heavy rain. Or wind. If your sheets get saturated with water and then start blowing in on you...ick.
Yeah.. With as much rain as there has been this season I would plan for rain. If it rains you would want a good tent or a vehicle that is comfy enough to get by with. Cots are the way to go during the summer. They are fairly cool. Tents are hot during the day. We bring a tent and an easy up and a tarp that covers both the tent and the easy up. During the day we try to avoid the tent because it is very hot and spend time under the easy up, but at night the tent sleeps fine. We have a couple of 12 in battery operated fans that help circulate the air. If you have the funds I would get a tent and some sort of additional shade for the hottest parts of the day.
I have never brought a tent in 8 Roos but always had a cot or hammock. You could just put an inflatable mattress under the canopy though. Or even just a couple sleeping bags/blanlets for padding.
I'll be doing an ez-up with tarps/tapestries for walls and a cot.
A simple tarp on the ground would suck though it'll get dirty and wet real quick and stay that way for the rest of the festival. Ground tarps are nice for walking on not sleeping on.
