as this was my first roo...i'm curious whether or not years past had wine or liquor in centeroo. i am definitely not a beer drinker, and that will probably never change. i didn't want to spend lots and lots of cash at roo, but i definitely would have been happier with the option to buy a glass (correction: plastic cup) of wine or a mixed drink. i went to one stand thinking they had mixed drinks, but all they had was virgin drinks. i heard there was a bar of some sort, but i only found it on the last day, and it was closed when i saw it.
so what gives?? why not have beer AND wine/liquor? i don't think they should exclude those of us that don't like beer, or even the people that like beer but just want the option of something else. one of my friends suggested that they don't want people getting too crazy...but that doesn't really fly w/ me....i mean, it's roo!! people are supposed to get crazy...that's the idea!
i know i saw a winery up the street from the entrance to roo...maybe they and some other local wineries can supply it, they can generate publicity for local businesses.
also, if anyone has the email and/or snail mail address for superfly, i'd like to write them about this.
Good question! In the years that we have been to Roo (every year since '04), I have never seen wine or liquor in Centeroo. I noticed that at the Echo Project they had some mixed drinks (maybe with Jack Daniels?), but not wine. At least that was a different option than beer, though.

oooohhhh!!! you went to the echo project? how was it? i really wanted to go, but i didn't know about it until the weekend before it was held and i already had plans and no $$ to buy the tickets. it didn't seem like they advertised it very well...but i'll be on the lookout to see if they do it again next year.
so, my fellow winos (and liquor lovers)...we should see about organizing and sending letters/emails to superfly about this situation. what do you say? i think it's a win-win situation for superfly. the vendor at the virgin drink stand said that they tried to get superfly to agree to let them put vodka/rum in the drinks, but they wouldn't allow it. it doesn't make sense to me... ???

And, in my humble opinion, it blew this year's Roo away! I had one of the best times of my life (and only 30 minutes from my apartment, might I add)! I can't wait for next year!!!!!!

Liquor also dehydrates your body way faster than beer I think. I'm not 100% sure on that fact, but I think it's pretty accurate. The last thing the Roo medics want is even more dehydrated/effed up people in their tent.
But I do agree, it'd be nice if they had one or two small places to get a cup of wine or a nice mixed drink. Then again, I've always been a beer kind of guy... so I don't mind too much with the way it is.

If i was you. I would just bring your own.. wine you can get a box. with booze mix up your drinks and put it in a water jug. or buy plastic bottles and mix on site..with beer being as high as it was in price .. booze would be even more expensive. i think that its good that they dont sell booze. asfor getting it into centeroo... go vip . there are no problems getting into centeroo, we brought all our own into centeroo...
Yeah, I definitely think its a good thing that they DON'T sell liquor in centeroo. I think they could probably handle a couple of wine vendors or something.
But then again, I never drink anything other than beer.

It's not so easy to get drinks in if you cannot go VIP though. I'm a single mum and certainly am not able to afford it. I am going to email them about having wine there - the idea of the local vineyard is a really good one.

maybe contact the local winery and ask them if they already asked about selling in there ... but remember bonnaroo does not allow glass so im sure they would be pouring outta box's.

At Lollapalooza this year they had bottles of wine that you could buy for $24 that they poured into plactic bottles. It was pretty badass (seeing as beer was $7 and only Bud) but I ended up "accidentally" getting too drunk. I think some wine is a good idea and I don't know why they don't already have it.

I'm also not a beer drinker, I prefer Jack and Coke, but to be honest, when I've been at festivals, I've never really wanted to drink. Drinking in the sun has never gone well for me. I usually just drink water and juice. At my first 'roo, I didn't drink at all. This past year, I woke up and drank some orange juice and vodka on the walk to the entrance. I do, however enjoy other things more. But those I can't tell you about.

i did bring an excellent boxed wine, i also brought drinks that i premixed at home and liquor for mixing with juice. but that didn't help me in centeroo, since they don't allow any open containers or anything other than water bottles. i wish i had the $$ to spend on a vip ticket. my only hope was to pregame at the campsite, as i couldn't purchase anything i wanted to drink in centeroo. maybe they'll overprice booze, but at least there will be an alternative for the people that want to drink something other than beer in centeroo.
i also disagree w/ the person that said that liquor is more dehydrating than beer. i don't think that is the case. of course, ounce for ounce it is, but since people need a lot less liquor to get a buzz, they will be drinking far less liquor than beer.
anyhow, i would be super happy to have wine, so i'm not really worried about them serving liquor, i just thought, since i was asking, maybe someone would know if they ever had it at roo, and if anyone knows why they don't serve wine or liquor.
i'm off to send my thoughts to superfly...wish me luck...

I think it makes perfect sense. If one shot is equal to one beer, then you are getting more hydration from beer than liquor. You would be getting basically they same alcohol, but with a lot more fluids mixed in. At least that sounds right to me.

For me it just comes down to the fact that I hate the way beer tastes so I refuse to drink it. And if the alternative is not getting a buzz then I am ok with that. I just wish there were more choices for us picky people
Either way all alcohol will dehydrate you in that weather, you just have to pace yourself and drink lots of water also. I would probably wait until evening to drink anyway - who wants to drink in that heat during the day.

At Voodoo they have Southern Comfort as one of their big sponsors, so this year again at Voodoo they had the SoCo hurricanes and such.. maybe if a liquor company sponsered roo they'd have some type of mixed drinks for sale.. but I prefered the homemade long island teas being made throughout the camp sites!! $5 for a big plastic cup of goodness!

And if they are made the right way $20 will have you feeling no pain... my girlfriend was buying the frozen virgin drinks (the ones with the cup with the lights on the bottom) and adding malibu rum to them most of the weekend . it kept her cool and toasty at the same time .

I just got a reply - not a good one though
Thanks for getting in touch. While we would love to serve Wine and Liquor at our event, it requires a different permit and we are unable to acquire one. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Post by sleepyrobin on Nov 6, 2007 19:02:11 GMT -5
that's too bad. i haven't received a reply to my email yet. maybe if enough people write, they'll consider attempting to get that permit rule/law changed. cross your fingers
you are absolutely correct. I brought some wine and could not drink it. but for some reason hard liquor in the heat is no problem when mixed with the appropriate libations ;D

A-HA!!! i've got it! i stumbled across this earlier today. it's the "wine rack" it appears to work like 2 small camelbaks that you strap inside your bra, and then fill with contraband alcohol. here's a photo:
they even have something for guys...although not quite as flattering...the beer belly! it's a camelback that you strap to the front of your body.
