To be honest I heard this too. I was at the Which when I was asked by "Security" why I was waiting in line with GA when we had a place of our own. We didn't move as I was positive we'd get in on the right side side.
He was saying VIP, JHO, not just people with those passes. IDK whats right.

You're talking about the actual "pit" line, though, right GL? I was responding with the understanding that the OP was referring to the blocked off areas at the tents. Up front, on the left.

The way I understood it was there was a separate VIP pit, in front of the stage, at least at the Which. To the left. I maybe wrong though.

Then it sounds like it was really up to the security people who they let in. When I asked the security dudes at the Tents, they said no, the blocked off area was for the people with "That" passes.
The guide book this year gives info about a pit for the Which stage. The way it was described it sounded like it was just like the pit at What, i. e. for everyone.
During Buffalo Springfield I tried to find the line on the left side of Which and I was told by security that the pit was only for press. I told them what the guide book said and they acted like they had never heard of any such thing.
I then fought my way over to the right side and I was told by security over there that it was only for Total Access.

Very frustrating!
This was my major problem with Bonnaroo this year. Volunteers and Security. Nobody seemed to know anything.

There was two pits behind the What and Which. The first pit was the GA pit, and then there was a second pit (same entrance on one side) immediately behind the GA pit that was for That Pass holders and Total Access.
And yes, there was serious lacks of communication across the staff about the whole thing.
