$30 isn't much at all! Especially for Hot Chip. Ur silly, obviously go
Around here $30 isn't much either. That's pretty standard for a majority of shows. If I can find a show I want to see for $20 or less it's a big deal. But I've seen people on here and elsewhere make comments about how $30 and up is a lot for a single show. It makes me wonder if ticket prices for the same bands vary from city to city.
I would say $30 is about average for lesser known or "on the rise" acts, $40-50 for better known to well-known or rare acts and then varying prices as you get bigger. For example, I paid $30 for Sylvan Esso and Tycho- both at the same venue, $50ish for Seth Avett & Jessica Lea Mayfield and MMJ- both at diff theaters, $40 for Rusted Root & The Wailers this year, $10 for The Wailers last year, $30 for Broken Bells and $70 for Santana- all at the same venue....
Idk. I'm just thinking aloud here but it's something that intrigues me.
I find it fascinating to ponder/discuss too. Since I grew up in the triangle area of NC (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill), and most of the shows I saw as a teen were at local venues around there, I got used to the $10-25 price range as well. But now that I'm in DC...that expectation has gone out the window for sure. Hot Chip is playing Echostage here (ugh, I won't go on my rant about that venue right now, but I despise how they're putting big bands in there now because the venue is MADE for EDM/DJ shows and thus the acoustics do not handle bands well at all) over the summer for like $45 plus fees? Kind of absurd.
But then when I saw Sylvan Esso in the Triangle a couple weeks ago...that shit was TEN DOLLARS a ticket. I think they were super cheap because SE lives in Durham, so home court price slash or something, idk. But paying $10 for that ticket made me miss the days of going to local shows in that area for so cheap.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.
They definitely do. Some of it depends on the cost of living, some of it depends on touring expenses (it costs a lot to send a band to the ass end of the planet for 5-6 cities), but it's not only that - some bands are more or less popular here than in the US, and that's definitely reflected in the cost as well. Even when I was in the US, I'd often see higher prices for NYC than for the same band in Boston.
I am convinced anyone who thinks $30 is a lot for a single show lives in Narnia. After enough time in Boston/NYC/Sydney/Melbourne, any well-established, halfway decent act for much under $30 is like a unicorn frolicking out of a supernova, farting its rainbow sparkles all across the land.
You can't compare Australia to the US though, that's apples and oranges. I'd absolutely expect shows to be more expensive in Australia.
How much of difference would you see between Boston and NYC? I'd expect maybe a 10-20% difference in prices between cities, but that's just a number I pulled out of my ass.
And I think you nailed it on the head with "well established". That's what draws the mainstream audience, and sells more tickets. If you're seeing a more underground band, it's going to be cheaper. I'm not seeing massive bands for $15-20. I'm seeing Liturgy, Tobacco, Dan Deacon, John Talabot, Inter Arma. Fantastic artists that put on a hell of a show, but they don't have the mainstream appeal to move lots of tickets.
I bet the ratio of venues to shows in a city plays a factor as well. If a city has fewer venues then it could realistically support, they'll be in higher demand, which means higher prices to the bands, and thus the ticket buyer.
In Austin, $15-20 is normal for a club show (500 ish or less), $30-50 is more average for the next size up venues (2000-4000), and then arena prices really depend on the artist.
Love some Rudy's Sause (sic). I always pick up a big bottle to bring home when visiting the Loop 360 Shell in Austin. Rudy's probably isn't Top 50 Texas bbq (Sauce being the exception), but it's still good for quick takeout. I seem to remember them having lean, moist or cutter's choice. Also their smoked prime rib, while not in the same ballpark as Kreutz, is good for the price if you can get there before it over cooks for the day. I'm talking 10:30-11 am. Get a pound of that shit while it's red/pink
The fact that you know Kreutz is a step up in my book! I prefer Smitty's if I'm in Lockhart, but you really can't go wrong there!
Smitty's is great too. I also love Black's and think they have the best sausage. Last 3 years we were in ATX for Memorial Day weekend, we hit all 3 for one meal/meat coma. Kreutz prime rib is my favorite thing in Lockhart, but I've had outrageous everything at all 3. I haven't gotten to Chisolm Trail though or the new Black's in Austin. If that's as good as the one in Lockhart, I'll just hit that from now on since there is no way I'm probably ever going to wait in line for Franklin's. We did hit a new truck at a trailer park on the east side last year which was also particularly good.

10-20% is about right, usually towards the higher end of that spectrum. You have a wise culo.
Ratio of venues definitely plays a factor. Melbourne is teeming with venues, so it becomes much more of a buyer's market. I would imagine Austin is much the same. I still get to see some great bands on the cheap sometimes, though they're pretty much always Aussie bands - which is by no means a bad thing, just a more limited pool.
Yo, anyone that's seen Passion Pit live....are they any good?
No, every once in a while there is a person that says they saw a decent passion pit show, but nobody ever says they were great. I have seen them three times and hated every show but one and even with that one show, I only thought it was livable. Though, if you go, just get pretty hammered and you'll have a good time.

was pretty drunk and pretty far back in the what field at their show at roo 2013. had a grand time back there with our own little dance party. .... and then I saw them again that august - was rather drunk that show, too. also a good time.
so yeah, go in with a mindset of just having fun, not one looking for revolutionary musicianship, and you're golden.

Yep, that is what I was trying to get by saying get hammered and go and you'll have a good time. That's what my friends did at roo in 2013. I just hate the way they translate the songs live, they like, try to add a rock edge to their music, which doesn't work (for me at least)

Agreed. I've seen them just once, but they definitely did this and as someone who has listened to them a fair amount on track, it just found it to be a very odd artistic choice/risk to make - and one that ultimately did not pay off. Vocals sounded off at the show I attended as well.

I saw them at Buku 2013 and they sounded just awful. I liked a few of their songs before I saw them, but that show really ruined them for me. I can't even listen to them anymore. Because of that, I skipped them at Buku 2015 but what I heard of them sounded godawful. I used to think they were trying to be more EDM since they were at Buku, but have since realized that they just suck balls.

Case in point:
Lol at the person who commented "Why do so many people say they suck live, this clearly isn't the case at all." Uhh - were we watching the same video here? He sounds like an whining cat who is trying his hand paw at electronic music and all the other cats are like "nah....just give it up. Go back to your litter box where you belong, and leave your music there too."

From what others have said, it sounds like they have issues translating their studio albums to a live show. I enjoy their studio output, but I've never seen a full live performance. To be fair, those vocals must be insanely difficult to match in a live environment, especially when you're doing it for an hour straight. If he doesn't modify the way he sings live (maybe bring things down an octave for songs like Sleepyhead), I think he's going to blow out his vocal chords. I'm also aware that I seem to be in the minority of people on Inforoo who actually like their music. Oh well.

Haha, it's all good. Hypothetical situation: If you were tied to a chair and forced to listen to either Passion Pit or Vampire Weekend for 12 hours straight, who would you choose?
the lineup for the wyep summer music festival was announced this morning. brightside (local), kopecky, the lone bellow and martin sexton. it's an all day free event in pittsburgh, on june 27th this year. www.wyep.org/smf2015

OMG! That is the worst scenario ever, but goddam I hate Vampire Weekend. I think I would have to do Passion Pit... is death a choice?

Hahaha your hate for VW is that intense? They're another band I liked on track a lot - then seeing them live killed that appreciation for their albums entirely. I can hardly listen to a song by them now without having PTSD to their fucking lifeless '14 Roo show. And I missed CHVRCHES for that shit. Forever bitter.

Yes my hatred is that intense. I couldn't even tell you what it is that I hate so much, besides vocals, that annoying Caribbean sound and the lyrics, but its fingernails on a chalkboard to me.
What the fuck, why do you guys hate Vampire Weekend so much?
I didn't until seeing them at last year's Roo. They were DEAD. No energy. No excitement. I was so sad about it, and now I can't get into their albums anymore :\

One of my friends would argue that they are amazing live, "with his angelic vocals." Gag me.

Not trying to start an argument, but c'mon now that's just silly. Even if a live performance is disappointing, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to appreciate their studio output.

Angelic? Ugh, no. WHAT A SNOOZE FEST. He looks like he's playing to his grandparents at their old people's home.

I saw them at a fest at the end of march and was the best (of 4) shows I've seen. The most impressive part, to me, was he was able to sing in his style the whole time. I've gotten pretty lukewarm on their music, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. Probably would have liked it more if they did t play right after Portugal. The man who were incredible

Their Roo show was definitely very lackluster. It didn't seem like they were even happy to be there. That being said, their set at Firefly in 2013 was freaking awesome.
