I think ticket prices are out of hand but I don't fundamentally have an issue with artists/promoters pricing tickets at what they think the market value is.
There's no way to tell who's a true fan versus who's a speculator/reseller, and if you let everyone have a crack at tickets at what you estimate to be a below-market price, you're creating an arbitrage opportunity that anyone can exploit.
agreed. but the more fan-friendly option is for artists to keep ticket prices low but keep adding shows until demand is met. for an artist that means working harder for the same amount of money, but arguably in the long term you create more goodwill with your fanbase because they got to see you for $50 instead of $150.
this would mean less touring and more mini residencies in major markets, which is bad for fans outside of those markets but also good for artists since (a) they don't have to travel as much and (b) lower expenses due to less break down/build up and travel.
there are also the logistics of getting venues to allow you to put a multiday hold so you can add shows at will, but this already happens so it must be possible.
The residency model works both ways. If you're not hitting a lot of cities, you're not turning casual concertgoers into devoted fans as easily as you would if you were going to their cities. And those attending multiple nights of a residency are still probably only buying one t-shirt or one hoodie, as opposed to two different fans in different cities each buying merch.
Ultimately, it all comes down to what the market will accept. When people don't feel that the price is worth the value, they won't buy tickets. Secondary market sellers won't gobble up tickets for resale if they can't move them.
A lot of this may come down to 2024 being a post-pandemic >< pre-authoritarian regime year and everyone wanting to have as much fun as possible during this lull in the action.
Arena shows under three figures are a thing of the past my friends.
AFI last year at The Forum when they performed Sing The Sorrow with Jawbreaker, Chelsea Wolfe and Choir Boy as support was $80 after fees for floor. Show was sold out in a couple hours. Artist can find ways but they just dont want to.
K Pop aacts used to price their tickets pretty low at stadiums shows because they wanted to ensure sellouts and make the real money from selling merch. Thats the whole point of the $25 liquidation next week. Asses through the gate. Youll buy 2 beers and a burger for $50 and a t shirt for $40. That more than makes up for the 50% loss on a ticket.
Artists should just go back to direct sales. Maggie Rogers was doing her best last week with this and having her in person presales and tickets have sold out in a few cities. But others overall have reasonable pricing for what it is. Adele did that on her last tour and a lot of people were pleased to find tickets at good prices without insane fees.

Yeah, there will still be a few strategies like that but, particularly for bigger/expensive cities, even the top levels are going to be $100 +. I live in NYC and for in demand shows there really are just THAT many rich people who live in and around the city happy to pay whatever prices to go to hot events which is why Olivia Rodrigo tickets never dipped below $500 even for the worst seats and why two Pearl Jam MSG dates are nearly $1k/ticket regardless of where you're sitting.

Also the free market for resale is the killer in Ny. Wild west out there which sucks. I guess having 3 arenas and 5 stadiums here helps to keep some things in check. Thats just in La, not counting whats east or south.
Gesaffelstein is onsale next week now so it wont announce til then.
Link takes me to Ticketmaster home page.
I had that problem too. If you’re on a phone, if you hold down on the link instead of just clicking it, it will pull up the correct link. At least that worked for me.

That worked but it didn’t take me to anything I haven’t seen.

Yeah, it was just a list of bands. Who knows what shows.

Ticketmaster's face value exchange thing is such a scam. You guys know that, right? Most folks see it as a "good" thing, but it's just another tool for Live Nation to control pricing/tighten their grip on the market.

There's a minimum amount it lets you list them for too. Sometimes that minimum is higher than the actual face value TM is selling it for. Stubhub has plenty of problems too, but at least if I'm really desperate to get rid of a ticket, I can do so even if it's at a major loss.

Yeah, seeing this for Dead & Co. at the Sphere. TM lists their price without all fees. They both come out to $395 total.
The San Diego paper had a story this morning that mentioned some of the $25 shows here but I can't find the list online.
TMobile customers get early access to the tickets, at 7 a.m. Tuesday.
Also, Hilton Honors members can get two tickets for 25,000 points.
Click that. It depends what device your using. Your phone might take you to the app which wont give you anything, but it might load the proper page.

we can all see that, yes. But not all those shows will be in San Diego which was the point of gazer 's post. I assume iron maiden at North Island will be one of them, so that's a good start at least.

They never give that out in advance, that would be too convenient.
