The debate was not who is better. It was about who is more popular and album sales is a good way to look at it. No one said WSP was inferior. Just that AF is more popular.
This is an understatement: I love the Arcade Fire.
I found out about the band through a friend 3 months before Neon Bible. I got Funeral and it immediately struck a chord with me...then it was Neon Bible (over and over again, just like Funeral), then it was the EP, and now its Live Recordings.
I saw them live on June 2 at the Greek Theater in Berkeley. Through the dense clouds of pot smoke, behind the glowing pillars of light, and basking in the neon light of an ominous turning bible, my stoned eyes glimpsed upon music incarnate. All which is good and pure in music was present that night. We danced, head banged, sung, moved any way possible in our tiny excuses for personal space in a sold out crowd - and all of it, everyone, intoxicated. You see, Arcade Fire is not so much music as it is a cerebral phenomenon, a NO NO WORD!!! in itself, a moment of transcendence that lasts two hours. You have not really begun to experience this band until you see them live.
Before the Arcade Fire, I was a mess of hormones and teenage angst. Beginning with the first mysterious piano notes of "Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)" to the last resounding organ chord of "My Body is a Cage", the music was a spark of hope which warmed my wayward soul ("Wake Up" holds particular significance). It made me, a once devout practicing Catholic who grew up in a conservative family in a conservative neighborhood, question God.
Which is why Neon Bible is hardly just an album. It's the founding of a new religion, one whose creed is non believing - non believers of hypocritical Western religions, non participants in the reckless commercialism which as shaped the culture and future of a nation. When you are touched by a band or by music with a message as pure and as strong as Arcade Fire's, its not hard to imagine a world without God because all the tools for redemption, salvation, and happiness are all already within ourselves.
I am 16 years old. While all of this may seem like self-righteous indiekid bullshit, all I have to say is this:
Do you remember when music had the power to change people?
As the guy with the AF logo in his avatar ... this.
It's been an entertaining argument, but pointless, really. Both bands are popular in their own circles. AF's circle just happens to be a bit bigger ... like worldwide.
It's difficult to compare apples to apples (attendance at common venues between WSP and AF) lots of times because of time of year, day of week, venue set-up, etc. For instance, Gexa Energy Center in Dallas (or whatever it's called this week) holds 20K, but AF wanted no lawn tickets for their gig there.
Also. is WSP really bigger than Buffalo Springfield? C'mon
Personally I don't really think so, although I'll admit that at least that's a much closer comparison than WSP vs. Arcade Fire. But in general, I think a random Joe off the street is probably more likely to have heard of Neil Young or Stephen Stills or "For What It's Worth" than any of Widespread's members or songs.
I was at both shows, and Widespread's show this year was the least packed headliner show I've ever seen on the farm - I don't think there was more than 40,000 people there. Buffalo Springfield might have had as many as 60,000 people packed in front of the Which Stage. I said it before Roo, and I stick by my opinion - BS and WSP should have switched spots.
This is an understatement: I love the Arcade Fire.

So just gotta say.. I respect your opinion and I'm glad you get so much enjoyment out of their music. But when I read stuff like this about Arcade Fire it just sounds ridiculous to me. I just don't see it.

This is pretty much how I felt about Phish at 16, I am glad you have found a band that gives you such joy, and has such meaning for you.
Why is it they play such smaller venues only in TN?
I know the last time they played in Knoxville to my knowledge was at the Tennessee Theater which is not the biggest venue in town, but they played 3 nights in a row. I don't know if they did similar runs in other cities, but it would make sense with the jam band demographic liking to go to multiple shows in a row.
Apples and oranges, as someone above me so eloquently put it. I wouldn't call myself a "Panic-head" or whatever, but Widespread Panic is a Bonnaroo legend. They've closed out more Bonnaroos than any other band. In fact, in 2005, they HEADLINED Bonnaroo with unopposed sets on Saturday night and Sunday night. They closed out Bonnaroo in '02, '03, '05, '07. '08, and '11. These guys are jam legends. My first Panic show was at the double headlining show in '05 and I was completely blown away. Then I saw them in '06 at an arena show....it was OK. Saw them closing at Bonnaroo '07 right after the White Stripes. HELL YEAH. Finally caught them again this year at the end of Bonnaroo 11. I thought they were amazing.
They rock harder than Phish, Dave Matthews or The Allman Brothers, IMO. The singer can actually hit a good raspy note! They have toured more than any other band in the last 30 years. These guys have been at it non-stop.
I feel really sorry for anyone that didn't stay to see WP this year to close out the festival. Where's your sense of DISCOVERY????? That is what the Roo is supposed to be about, but oh well. Guess you didn't you get the memo. There's a reason that Panic is closing the festival, even if you don't understand it. Don't pay attention to record numbers or ticket sales, just go and check out the music!
Arcade Fire vs. Widespread Panic is a ridiculous debate....
Justin Biebler sold more cds than Arcade Fire.....
Arcade Fire will be gone in 2-3 years tops....Panic has made 10 X $$$ Arcade Fire ever will touring. You kids cease to amaze me.
Another one of Jess's troll accounts
Another of CPK's paranoid ramblings and idiotic statements. Also I have been in a car with one of the inforoo moderators all day, pretty sure no troll accounts were being created jackass.
Also troll accounts are not my style I just come out and say anything I care to openly.

Perhaps that post was not meant to be taken seriously? Just a thought.

I am sure mine was meant to be taken just as seriously as his was.

1. Not paranoid. What do I have to be paranoid about and for that matter how could anyone be paranoid about anything on a message board 2. 6 words does not qualify as rambling. 3. If anyones been a jackass lately it has been you. Now we know you can't take a simple joke and that you can dish it but not take it. I guess we will have to tip toe around your feelings so we dont have to witness anymore of your childish tantrums.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.
Who cares who is bigger? They are kind of different markets. It depends on who you ask. Personally I like WSP a lot better. I tried and tried to get into Arcade fire, but never could. I just dont get it I guess (ok, rip me - it wont matter. I like what I like) Looking from the outside though, I see WSP is really big in many circles. I see the same in Arcade Fire. Sometimes they overlap, sometimes they don't. I think in time, WSP will prove to have more longevity because they are spectacular musicians, and have a sound that is more "well received" by a wider audience? That is my opinion, but I guess in music debates we are only talking about opinion, or perception right?
At any rate, If I had to choose, I would say that WSP is bigger than Arcade Fire. But I dont have much to base it on.
