Look at this setlist from their current tour in Portland: Annihilation(Crucifix cover) Imagine (John Lennon Cover) Weak and Powerless The Hollow What's Going On (Marvin Gaye cover) People Are People (Depeche Mode cover) The Outsider (What's So Funny 'bout) Peace, Love and Understanding?(Elvis Costello cover) When The Levee Breaks (Led Zeppelin cover) The Noose 3 Libras Remix Gravity Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie (Black Flag cover) Orestes Passive Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums The Fiddle and the Drum (Joni Mitchell cover) By And Down
8 cover songs? And 10 tracks from emotive? I've never even really considered emotive a legitimate APC album. I've always considered it a covers/bsides compilation And most of the covers aren't even good. What are they thinking?
I contemplated driving to Atlanta for their show. I would've been pissed to make the drive for that set. If I want to hear a cover band I'll go to a pub up the road.
Wow... I don't think I'd be happy with that. I didn't like Emotive, for the most part... Passive is cool, but its appeal to me is mostly because it was supposed to be a Tapeworm song.
I <3 their cover of Failure's The Nurse Who Loved Me.
Me too.. but unfortunately their best cover isn't included in their covers set
Yeah I like passive also but that's the only song i would've chosen off of emotive to hear in a live set. I think it's interesting they're playing counting bodies like sheep instead of pet. I admit I do like the bodies like sheep remix better

Have tickets for the show here in Cincinnati. Yeah the setlist is a way to emotive heavy. Oh well I will take what i can get. Haven't seen APC since like 2001 I believe.
***edit: now that I'm home (as opposed to mobile-posting while walking to my car) I can post a clearer response.
Yep, the setlist Laggy posted is almost identical to what they gave us tonite. Sure, the stuff from Emotive was good...and they played expected hits off Mer de Noms & 13th Step which gave me chills - but overall, the show was a bit on the disappointing side. Not much of a stage show. I had a clear view of Billy & Josh, so seeing their craftsmanship up close was worth admission.
Don't get me wrong: Maynard can do no wrong in my book. Having seen TOOL several times, I am always satisfied by his live shows. Howevah... tonite was borderline lamesauce with the excessive covers. Oh, and WTF did they do to 3 Libras? It was some remixed version that sounded barely recognizable compared to the original.
OK, maybe I'm spoiled from seeing too many spectacular shows this year, but c'mon, MJK: would it kill you to give an encore? Even just one measly song? And ending on a slower song that must be new? This was the musical equivalent of "wham bam thankyouma'am" only I wasn't quite done yet. But then again, their opening band (ohdearlord, that was odd!) of female Japanese power punk on Red Bull wasn't the proper mood-setter.
Still glad I went...wouldn't have missed it, but wish it had lived up to my expectations. (On a side note, it was funny to watch him eat a Vortex burger on stage between songs. He explained how they'd rented a car & "hauled asss to get here just now" so they hadn't had time to shower, change, or eat anything. Vortex burgers got more of a cheer than some of the songs, which is sad.)
The covers were good, but ya know...when you're paying good money to see a band perform, you kinda want them do more of their own songs. Or at least I do...

7/2 - Lotus, MiMoSa, The New Deal, The Glitch Mob 7/3 - Red Rocks and Blue II w/ Umphrey's Mcgee and Easy Star All Stars 7/4 - Umphrey's Mcgee Boulder, CO
A lot of people complain about cover songs, but I actually enjoy a good cover song or two during a show; that said, I would definitely be kind of pissed off if I showed up to see a band and 8 out of 18 songs were covers. At that ratio, you might as well head to your local bar and watch an actual cover band for a fraction of the cost.
Now, anyone who knows my taste in music well knows that Patti Smith is one of my favorite musicians of all time, but when I saw her at the Met last fall, she performed 17 numbers - five poems, six originals and six covers. I actually enjoyed the poetry readings and knew I was getting that going in, since the show was advertised as "a salute to the world of Kubla Khan and the poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge" - but I was slightly disappointed that there were as many covers as originals. Not that the covers were bad, but there were a bunch of her own songs that she didn't play that I'd rather have heard instead. I still enjoyed the show and it made my year-end top 10 list - but it would have probably been top five if there were a few more original numbers. Oh well, I suspect we'll get something very different at Virgin.

Friday night's show was terrific!!! Based off reviews I was expecting worse, but I was very pleased. While not the biggest fan of emotive, I'm glad I spent the money on the floor tickets!

I went into Lollapalooza very skeptical of how the performance would be. They were initially my biggest draw that made me choose this festival, and I feared I wasn't going to like them.
For nearly the first half of their set it felt like my fears were coming true. Annihilation>Imagine was a slow start, and I started wondering if this would be another of the more cover-heavy setlists. I felt a lot better when they broke into weak and powerless, followed by the hollow, but I really just wasn't feeling it like I wanted to/expected to. Then the 3 libras 'remix'. It was cool I suppose, but I really wish they would play the original version which is exponentially better.
Then they started "people are people" and I kind of groaned, as that's my least favorite APC song. But then I found myself REALLY surprised at how well it worked as a live song. It was really at this point that I started really getting into the set.
Then they broke out Counting bodies like sheep and shit got crazy. Me and a bunch of people around me stepped in for the missing trent scream samples with our "OH! OH! OH!'s". Then they pulled out the new song which was a great treat, even though I knew it was coming. Then for Blue>Magdalena>The Package I was in a state of pure bliss. Maynard's voice has such a hypnotic effect on me. And, to be honest, I really forgot how talented billy is. That guy is an amazing guitar player, and I feel I never gave him his due credit. His vocals aren't bad either. I'm actually going to give Ashes Divide another shot. I patiently waited through "When the levee breaks" (not a big fan of this cover) and they closed out with The Outsider>Passive, which was a great end to a great set.
It turned out to be a much less cover heavy set than I had feared, and the covers they did do actually were pretty good live. It was overall a fantastic set.
Honestly it's pretty much a tie for me between APC and MMJ as the best sets of the weekend.
I consider Emotive to very much be an APC album, what they did to those covers and how they made them their own was extremely impressive. Personally i'd much rather hear Thirteenth Step material above all but hearing some Emotive wouldn't ruin my experience.
