What are some of the best and worst shows you've seen this year, outside of those you saw at Roo?
Best -James Blake @ Lincoln Hall, Chicago - I was really blown away by this show. I didn't know exactly what to expect from him live, but he delivered. He will be the reason I attend Pitchfork this year.
Other Favorites -My Morning Jacket @ Auditorium Theater, Chicago - This was exactly one week after their Roo show and while it didn't beat seeing them in the pit at Roo, I still loved every second of it and getting an extra 30-45 minutes was pretty great. Having orchestra pit seats didn't hurt either ;D
-Gold Panda @ Schubas, Chicago - Club with a capacity of less than 200 people. Hadn't heard of him til someone asked if I wanted to go. Listened to a couple tracks and immediately bought tickets. I will see him again in a couple months when he returns.
-Trentemoller @ The MID, Chicago - I was entranced for two hours.
Least Favorites (worst probably isn't the right word) -Samiyam @ Double Door, Chicago - Was really looking forward to this one as I had been reading the hype on him since he's on the Brainfeeder label. Unfortunately the music didn't seem to flow and it never grabbed any of us.
-Bonobo (DJ set) @ Do Division Fest, Chicago - Again, really looking forward to this, but he didn't really take his tracks anywhere. I'd like to see him again in a club.
Best - LCD Soundsystem @ Terminal 5 (03/30) - I wasn't 100% sure what to expect from this one, because although I had never seen LCD Soundsystem before, I had seen James Murphy and Pat Mahoney do a DJ set about a year earlier, and it was kind of disappointing to be honest. Needless to say, they more than made up for it and then some. Their opening act (Sh*t Robot) was beyond phenomenal as well, and most likely would have shown up the main act if they weren't opening for a band as good as LCD Soundsystem.
Other Favorites - Wilco @ Solid Sound (06/24) - Neil Young @ Wang Theater, Boston (04/19) - JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound @ Solid Sound (06/25)
Least Favorite - Darin Grey @ Solid Sound (06/25) - I like noise rock as much as (probably more than) the next person, but this was basically just ear-piercingly loud feedback interspersed with some weird sound effects here and there for 20 minutes straight. Not exactly what I need on a Sunday morning. Thankfully, this was the only act I didn't like in what was otherwise a stellar weekend of music.
