I ran across this earlier and wasn’t sure what I thought. On the one hand, yeah. But then the revolutionary shit they did blazed a lot of trails for excellent shit that came later. I was super little when they were big so I missed that era for the most part. But the people a few years older than I who maybe had older brothers or sisters swore by the studio albums once they turned on. I think that started at Revolver. So for all the I wanna hold your hand and whatever, there was that, The White Album, Magical Mystety Tour, Sgt Peppers, Abbey Road and Let It Be. I think each of those albums is giant and stands on its own. Fuck, Umphreys covered Dear Prudence off the White Albim tonight. Aside was they also did a fn badass version of Eminence Front (threw in BoC and Fleetwood Mac teasers). But from the early era and liberating a lot of women to express emotion through the Maharajah and acid years later, they left a mark greater than anyone else in time so far for rock and roll. So while I definitely appreciate the sentiment that they are overrated, the later day shit should have removed all doubts as to what they were. JMO

tl;dr
It’s whatever. I think history proves you are wrong is the nutshell. But I didn’t necessarily disagree with your premise.
It’s 4:30 am and I’m sitting in the middle of my mom’s backyard with a flashlight, a boombox, and a 6 pack of Coors Lite.I’ve been in Roanoke for less than 24 hours and it feels like I never left.
I'm not a big Bassnectar fan, but a few years back I caught an NYE show in Birmingham and really enjoyed the show and the crowd. It felt very "jambandy" to me, good sense of community, friendly people, big party, etc. So I subscribed to the Bassnectar subreddit and liked the stuff I saw there. A lot of people extremely passionate about this artist they love and the community around him, lots of positivity, etc. Mostly it was interesting because it was a scene NOT rooted in multiple decades of The Grateful Dead, which all jambands are.
But the problem with a grassroots artistic community like Bassnectar's is you can't learn from the mistakes of those who came before you. By no means is the Phish scene pure and lilly-white, but it's significantly less scummy than it used to be.
We all know about the poor behavior of Bassnectar "rail-fam" fans from horror stories at various festivals, but it seems that over the years rather than the good heads prevailing, the bad heads are growing in number and their behavior is getting worse. The thread linked above really shows the frustration of Bassnectar's core fanbase, many are straight up calling for him to take a break for a few years so the scene will spread out elsewhere. Even at it's darkest I never saw anyone in the Phish scene calling for a break up or hiatus (although this happened, it was more because of Trey's drug issues and the backstage scene Phish allowed to develop).
I'm far from an expert on the Bassnectar community, but it saddens me to see a community rather quickly go from joy, support, and positivity to people quitting their favorite artist simply because they can't stand the fans he has created.

I gawk at this subreddit from time to time. It seems like these posts happen after every single big Bassnectar event and people and happenings like this are why I lost interest in a lot of jam bands.
Has Lorin addressed the crowd behavior at all? Or is he really hands-off about it?

so you don't find projectile vomiting and sweaty bug-eyed men being dragged out of the venue by police officers charming?
in all seriousness i guess i tolerate a certain amount of bad behavior at Phish shows, but if it ever began consistently ruining my shows I'd be out. Tickets ain't cheap these days.
Regarding Lorin addressing it, again I'm a Bassnectar outsider, but I do think he's tweeted from time to time regarding community and cleaning up after yourselves etc., but judging purely by fan comments it's maybe been a while since he's commented.

Pure bliss is when you soft-boil an egg to eat for later at your shit-show of a job, and then have to reheat it a little in the microwave, but you got lucky and cooked it just perfectly so that the reheating process just finishes the job without ruining the yolk. Makes all of the fuck you put up with all day just a little easier to endure.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

I know a bunch of bass fam, and those cats are all really cool. Nice of whomever started that thread on reddit to acknowledge it's not everyone. It's just a few people. Nazi skins watered down the punk scene. Mumble Rap, Lil Yachty and Bhad Bhabie assisted in watering down rap. New kids are always coming into a given scene and need to learn how to act. You'll see that at any festival. We were all there once and had to figure shit out. Professional thieves piss me off though. I know at 'Roo, certainly Waka (most likely Bisco and Summer Camp and shit), people steal anything. I know of some stories of wrist bands actually being cut off in Bonnaroo from a passed out individual. I also know of some people's underwear being stolen out of an RV at waka. Like what the f'f? Who wants someone else's underwear (guy's fwiw)? You hear or read about cell phone thieves or people stealing food and/or alcohol out of other people's ice chests. A lot of people suck. Other than seeing some people go down, I've never had any issues at any Bassnectar shows. Everyone's always been nice to me. I've been in front of rail fam in VIP trying to troll them, and they always took it in good fun. Two best Bassnectar shows I've seen have been this year. So the music and experience is probably at its peak. But I don't want to be with a bunch of self-entitled assholes who think they can do whatever they want without any consequences. Those types of people are shitty.

LN at Waka always seemed super sketchy to me, especially outside of the main venue/revival tent. Those little stages in the woods were always full of spun out wooks and tweakers and those remote areas always felt a little sinister, especially if you were camped way up on the mountain and had to hike a good way. We once had all our hot dogs, lunch meat, and eggs stolen out of our cooler one year. at least they left all our beer. I'd still go back though, saw some great shows and I liked the LN bluegrass jams as a bit of counterprogramming to the k-holed hooligans' interests.

yeah it does make me curious if the complaints from bassnectar fans are blown out of proportion. but man they are pissed, way more pissed than i've seen other communities get.

We went the last two years of the festival (14, 15) and did VIP so we sort of were able to be on our own at the Revival Tent and main stage. But yeah, the late night stuff was crazy. I think either Sgt. Blotter or Longinus said they saw someone in 2010 or 2011 running naked through the woods and off the side of the cliff at the Satellite Stage. That's where the crazy shit was until early in the morning. I'd go back in a heartbeat. We went back for Backwoods at Mulberry which was a slightly more EDM version of Waka. Lots of freaks, wookies and hippies, but for whatever reason, we encountered almost zero douches. We left the ice chests out and everything, and no one fucked with anything. I'll say though that in 2015, some traveling group of performers (who looked like gutter punks or train travelers) made their way through VIP from the back side of the mountain and asked me, "oh is this VIP? We're the so-and-so's and are performing throughout Waka." I didn't catch their name, so I couldn't verify. But they totally looked like they were rolling through scouting shit out. We didn't get anything stolen from our campground in VIP that year, so maybe they didn't come back through and were legit. Idk.

Probably because the ones that care, really care about their reputation. It's been sullied in the past by d'bag acts, so it's out front and center. And I think many of them are cognizant of the wider perception at large of bass fam. Take care of yourself and everyone else you can has kind of been replaced by take care of yourself and fuck some motherfuckers who don't like it.

In my younger days I delighted in some bug-eyed antics. Now I'd prefer to happy cry at a Broken Social Scene show and be home by midnight.

In regards to the whole Bass Fam scene... my interactions with Bass Heads have generally been negative. Of course I don't go to Bassnectar shows or EDM shows in general so I'm not really an authority on the matter.
I just find the scene kind of fascinating from a sociological perspective, I guess. It seems like a fair amount of musical subcultures that put an emphasis on identity like punk or jambands or whatever Bassnectar is attract a seedy underbelly at some point. That's obviously based on confirmation bias but I'd be interested to read more on patterns like this and what you can do to keep a positive scene positive.

lost lands next weekend is the best basshead experience ever. excisions crowd seems to differ in that aspect. rail riding is not the main goal in life. he's a great dude and puts on the coolest fest i've possibly ever been too. cannot wait to be back there next week!

I know a lot of people going to lost lands. I’m jealous. Have fun!

got nothing but love for excision. only seen him once but it was big fun.
was just looking at the lineup, i love that the poster indicates "3X MORE GIANT FUCKING DINOSAURS".

Check out their trailer, "ONE MILLION WATTS OF BASS!!!!"
I know a couple kids going up that way from Raceland and Houma. It comes on YouTube so I'll probably catch a few sets on tv. I like a lot of the undercard, but I thought the top was much weaker for my tastes than last year. Of course Datsik isn't going to be playing anymore, so if you have to replace him with Illenium, so be it. It's not going to interest me, but still.
I much prefer the harder style of EDM that Excision brings, Black Label records, Disciple and all that shit. Compared to all the wuss-pop these days, it's nice to see people getting into some shit that's harder.

it was honestly pretty awe striking last year to walk in and after you pass the entrance with the two hard headed dinos ramming each other, there was about a 100 foot brontosauras which was really damn cool. t-rex's on either side of the main stage that blew smoke, pretty awesome production overall
here's his headline set from last year and honestly doesn't even do it justice because the camera is zoomed in most of the time and you can't even see the volcanoes. also yea one of em set on fire sat night and it was pretty wild
Hot take: If there was another rapper with 15 years of shit albums in a row like Eminem, they would have been thrown in the dumpster bin already or forced to move to another section of the hip hop game. Yet, for some reason people and promoters still give a shit about his albums?
