And door man was here. Next time Mf'er is going to break his leg kicking in our door ;D
I know it's somewhat comical, but my friends lived in a sketchy neighborhood in Brooklyn, so they did this (not their setup, but same premise):
Someone broke in once, that air horn went off and they sprinted out of the apartment. Effective, if you don't mind the aesthetic aspect of an air horn sticking sideways out of your wall.

I am not gay and sexual orientation has never been in the orbit of my concerns but I do have a special appreciation to one exceptional gay man. Barney Frank. In my mind’s eye he is the champion of liberalism and a stalwart of decency. It’s quite sad to hear of his announcement of retiring from public office.

I think it does bear some mentioning because he came out in '87 while he was in Congress which makes him the first Congressman to do so. Is it all the good he did? No. Did it make him any better of a public servant? No. You do have to appreciate the act though especially considering that homosexuality was not nearly as accepted in the general populace at the time.
Did everyone forget about the money he was getting from banks and insurance companies? That he and Chris Dodd weakened consumer protections on the Dodd-Frank bill? That he was taking vacations paid for by lobbyists?
Sure he might have been a strong liberal and good with the gay rights, but not all was good in MA-4.
I agree with Juggs. As long as we continue make a distinction between "black" and "white", "gay" and "straight", things are never going to change. What should any of that matter when it comes to the person? I'd rather be able to make a distinction between a good person and a terrible person.
Yeah, but ClarkGriswold wasn't saying "I appreciate him for making a bold stance by coming out as a gay man in a time when that wasn't something that people could easily do," he was commenting on Frank's general fitness as an elected official while also casually throwing in the fact that Frank is gay. The overall effect suggests a vibe of "he did a good job even though he was gay," when in fact any comment about his performance as a Congressman doesn't even need a mention of his sexuality.
I see what you're saying. I was responding more to your statement in a general sense rather than as a response to what Clark said.
We had the European-flights-are-expensive chat in the Belgian thread. Apparently it's cheaper to fly from Europe to the US than vice versa. But there has to be some kind of trick to getting a good deal on a flight, right?
I'm budgeting about $1200 for my flight for Glasto 2013. Someone, I don't remember who, said we could get flights as cheap as $800... but I'm worried that's not going to happen.

Thank you LD! There is something out there, some evidence that has made this decision for him. Why else is he retiring? Redistricting? "I've spent 20 years working on the fishing industry. None of the fishing areas will be in the new district I would be running in. I can't walk away from the fishing industry." Barney Frank.

I pay around $1070,- for my flight to Nashville. I would think you could get a flight for about $1000 to London.
London is cheaper but flying from USA to Europe is more expensive than the other way around.

We will be flying in to London when we go to Glasto. I'm just not looking forward to paying that much for a flight. We'd better get some nice perks!!

Not buying that one.
His district (MA-4) used to be an odd shaped one.
He lives in Newton, a liberal suburb of Boston up at the top. Brookline is also very liberal. Then it manages to sliver through suburbs between 128 and 495, to get to the South Coast. New Bedford, Fall River, and Taunton are all working class Democrat towns.
In the 2012 redistricting, he loses New Bedford and much of Fall River. It got a little more conservative, but nothing significantly - compared to the 5th. Hopkinton, Wrentham (Scott Brown's hometown), Franklin, and nearby aren't pretty pickups - but it shouldn't be that scary for a super liberal.
And just like that .. the semester is now over. Paper is emailed and for my "getting through it" gift I'm leaving for NYC here in a few hours for a weekend of Rock & Soul and some purse shopping in Chinatown.
I'd like to thank you folks giving me something to do this semester. Things will start to pick up shortly.
