My brethren and sistren to the north who knock sweet tea have got to realize that since time immemorial it's been the Southerner's sovereign remedy for beating the heat and humidity.
So next June when your tongue's hanging out at the farm, don't bother with Gatorade and Pedialyte and whatnot...sun-brew a gallon of Luzianne and stir a half-cup or a cup of sugar into it. Ice it, squeeze a lemon slice into it, and quaff that fracker. Trust me, it'll set you to rights.
I usually keep a pitcher of non caffeinated unsweetened tea in the fridge and use coffee for a pick me up.
I hear you, and you're right about caffeine and sugar being diuretics. But Southerners figured all that out a couple of hundred years ago. If you drink like a quadruple-sweet espresso it's going to dry you out. But if you dilute that same amount of caffeine and sugar in a gallon or two of water, you're going to be fine. Probably more than fine.
Which is what makes horse-piss like Miller Lite such a good mid-day beer at the farm. By the time you've gotten enough alcohol to dehydrate you, you're already rehydrated.
