True Story: That’s the second worst meeting I’ve had there that weekend. I was drunk enough to sit in mulch but not “I’m drunk and walking sideways” drunk. That was the night before.
The winner that took the prize at Pitchfork was when I met billybaroo in 2014 and he almost ran over me in a car.
Oh man. Billy was a great poster. Hope he's doing good.
I do as well. My favorite memory of him was screaming “FIRE WORKS” from the car with me and chicojuarz in there to go see the infamous DIIV show.
They were obviously gunshots and we didn’t know how to tell him.
So how exciting was the very first music festival, and how would you compare it to when dirt came out? I assume the early fests didn't allow motorized transportation any more than today's commercialized versions do, but could you bring your non-service dinosaur or penny-farthing?

Loved him. Once every couple of months he shares a snap on his story. Usually a view of the city from his apartment.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
I figured it out recently that it is when there is a convergence of three things.
A) My hair is long enough to annoy me. To be clear, this is a pretty low bar. B) I have the time to get it cut. C) I have the motivation to get in the car and drive the five minutes to the shop.
This usually works out to every month and a half to two months. I work with a guy who has had a standing appt to get his hair cut every three weeks for the last twenty years.
From 2002-2013 I had a 6-week standing appt. Then I threw the cheeseboard of life in the air, and I've never looked back. Ironically, 10 years later I went back to my original stylist.
Edit: autocorrected chessboard to cheeseboard and I'm not even mad or changing it.
most recommended Facebook posts are shit but every once in a while you get something random that kind of makes it worth it, like learning that Mike Posner has climbed Mount Everest
A touch late all around, but I hit 10 years on here too, in early March! And yet I somehow only met garageland 2 weeks ago making that the 4th person on here I think I've actually met.

Well hopefully we get to meet again perhaps next year. After the awkward, "Garageland?!" and the confused look on your face until I pointed to myself and said, "Decaanter!" it was a pretty funny and immediate journey to, "Man, I'm fucked up way too early in the day." Also the fact that I just learned your name a couple weeks ago is astonishing.
My partner will be graduating in the spring. Before she can officially start work as a music therapist she has to complete an internship. There are opportunities across the country, but we're not sure where we want to go, which is exciting! Obviously she has to get accepted, but where should we go?
I've lived in Seattle (where we are now), Minneapolis, Nashville, Cedar Rapids IA. She's lived in the lattermost city and NYC and don't necessarily want to go back to those places. It'll be for either 6 or 12 months and if we love it, we won't even move back to Seattle.
Shameless promotion of your city or a city you love: GO!

I've worked with a couple of music therapists here in Chicago. Not sure if I could help with an internship, but it's definitely a thing here

There any places in particular where there's more/better opportunities?
I always recommend New England, but I'm also kinda partial.

I love Cincinnati. Great music venues and food (even beyond Skyline!), museums, pro sports teams, parks, world class hospitals, decent cost of living… Plus Capital Cincy!

I’ll forever call Richmond home. Like any city, it has its problems, but it’s a beautiful place that’s rich in history and still pushing to be forward thinking. You’re always gonna have the good ole boys but ideas and preconceived notions over race and a persons sexuality is moving away. It’s easy to move around in but there’s so much greenery. I’m never lost here or feel like I’m a part of a machine.
Before we moved to South Side, I used to live in an apartment that was an old marshmallow factory. It was right down the street from where Patrick Henry gave the “Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Death” speech, but I digress. As much as the landlords tried to get rid of the smell, it never worked; thankfully. It was nice to go home and relax and smell marshmallows while listening to records.
I used to ride my bike all over and just breath the city. Soaking up what magic it has and what it’s gonna be. I miss those bike rides.

i lived in Richmond for a summer in the late ‘90s, and it was really nice…but it was also the time when there was a massive kerfuffle because they wanted to put a statue of Arthur Ashe on Monument Avenue, which was otherwise populated with statues of Confederate officers. I also remember advertisements for Confederate balls throughout that summer.
It was a jarring dichotomy, because the city did otherwise have some forward-facing culture. But, at that time, the undercurrent of it having been the capital of the Confederacy and the racism that came with that was still there.
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?

Did that get better in the past few decades?
Immensely. The 90’s were the start of the change, honestly. It’s still full of casual racism but people are learning and that’s the only way it will be defeated.
The Ashe monument fight was so god damn ridiculous. I feel like it was evened out when people tore down the Columbus statue and pushed it in the lake.

Does anyone know if there is some sort of general Nashville thread, or is this the best place to posit general city queries?
My wife and I got tickets to one of Jason Isbell's residency shows at the Ryman in October. We're bringing our kids and a friend to watch the kids during the show, and we'll be staying Friday to Sunday. I'm hoping someone has some suggestions regarding a) somewhere to get a dinner reservation near the Ryman before the show and b) fun stuff to do with our kids while we're there.

When we do a little bit of re-organizing and clean up around here it may be good to group or make a table of contents thread with links to all the various local spot threads.
