Help!? I use FireFox on my work computer and several websites are showing up like this one:
All was fine last week, and pages are loading like this now.
I've also tried using IE and the same thing still happens. So I guess it's some kind of setting that's messed up or something? I have no idea. All of my software is up-to-date, if that helps at all.
To add, it's not all websites, just a few. Still enough to be annoying. I feel stupid not being able to figure this out.
It's not necessarily a browser issue, chrome does that to me every now and then when I hit up digg. Its likely one of 4 problems. Your computer has IE built into it, try IE, see what happens
1. Firefox DNS prefetching sucks and at times causes problems including the one you are expirencing, as well as very slow web browsing in general. View this webpage to learn how to disable DNS prefetching: developer.mozilla.org/en/controlling_dns_prefetching
2. Corrupted TIF (temporary internet file) cache. Download CCleaner (its free, and it love you forever), and clean your computer with it. WARNING, this will delete your internet history, and possibly your saved passwords.
3. Its a problem with the DNS server your computer is using, you can try staticly setting this, but with it being a work computer, that may not be such a good idea. If you are in a Windows Domain Environment, changing the DNS server from the PDC's IP to an outside IP could screw up a whole host of other issues. If it comes to this though, I will give you some directions.
4. Its a problem with your ISP, and there isn't really anything you can do about it. I
Same issue with IE. I haven't tried on anyone else's computer, so unsure if it's ISP.
I would try the cache cleaner but my work passwords are saved, and I don't know what they are. Yeah, I mean, obviously I'm a stellar employee
You are just part of the majority there, nothing to be bothered about.
I could talk you through changing your DNS if you wanna, but it will probably have to be tomorrow, I am gonna slack off for like 10 more minutes, and then leave early.
JHO, I think a setting like "enable java scripts" or "allow active-x controls" or some such nonsense has gotten set incorrectly. I'm not a web geek so I can't be sure or tell you how to fix it but that's my hunch. If your work 'puter is managed by a tech staff that pushes software updates at you through a network app manager then they may have inadvertantly pushed something at you that screwed up your ability to view some web pages correctly.
Start ---> Control Panel Network Connections (Double Click) Local Area Connection (or maybe wireless connection, depending on desktop or laptop), hopfully you only have one Properties Find "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and highlight it and click properties VERY IMPORTANT, make a note of what addresses are entered into the DNS Server address fields. Please do not lose this note, you may find that changing these settings causing you some other problems, and have to revert back. Change these settings to (Primary) 8.8.8.8 (Alternate) 8.8.4.4 Close / reopen internet browser, see if that helped anything.
Let me know, I have some other ideas too, if it still broked.
Still broken. In my TCP/IP field, there were no addresses... the circle was clicked next to: "Obtain DNS addresses automatically". But anyway, I manually put in that 8.8.8.8 thing, closed my browser and reopened. Apparently it disconnected me from my intranet at work? (which I need)
Oh well. It's not a huge deal, I'm just curious what has caused it.

It sounds like you changed your IP address, instead of your DNS address, and re reading my instructions, I definitely forgot to tell you which box to edit. So, yeah, that was my bad.
You can try changing the DNS addresses (the lower two boxes on that properties page) if you want, but I can understand if you don't want to mess with it anymore.
One last thing, have you tried yelling obscenities at your computer and kicking it? That helps some times.
You should txt Jesse and tell him to come hook you up with some free IT help when he isn't busy. Or if you want, after lunch, I can crossloop into your computer and take a quick (like 10 minutes max) crack at it.
That's ok. Thanks for trying to help though! I will survive without those webpages
Feel free to call me at lunch at this point I am willing to bet it is a firefox add on.
Edit
Actually I am now pretty sure it is your ad block plus. Try turning it off. In the top right hand corner click on the red stop sign that says ABP, and check disable everywhere to see if that fixes it. If it does you will need to uninstall the ad on and reinstall it which I can help you with. I am 99% sure this is the problem, sorry I could not look at it really until now.

Thanks Jess, but it doesn't seem to be my ABP. Just disabled it and I still have the same issue.
However, an interesting note, on the etsy site, from that weird text version I posted above, I went to the "register" link, and when the new page loaded, it was perfectly fine! But once I signed in, the rest of the pages went back to being the weird text page. I don't know what's different about the Register page than the others... but hey, that one works.
Sounds like you are having trouble viewing Flash sites maybe?? (Don't go to etsy so not sure but am guessing here). That is a common thing when you have a browser (or switch, router, etc) that has disabled Flash. I think there is an IE option to enable ActiveX, JavaScript, etc that might help, but you'll probably have to turn OFF some of the security. When you go to the site, look at the VERY top of the screen, in the header space of the webpage. If it's an option that is disabled it will tell you something about why it is not displaying. Something along the lines of "ActiveX applications disabled" or "Does not support web-enabled pages...click here to view options" If you DO see that message, click the title bar and it will basically tell you what you need to do to fix it.
