I contend that this episode was even better than the ol' tractor-mutilates-a-foot-in-the-office episode. The tripping Roger was spectacular. And wtf with dude telling Peggy he was born in a concentration camp?!

Sunday's episode was the best of the season in my opinion. So far, of course. Peggy's story is very interesting to me, I love when she is featured. Roger taking LSD was awesome. I feel like its going to have changed his attitude for future episodes. I also thought that while some aspects of his trip were not portrayed completely accurate, I think it was a good representation of the mental state you can find yourself in. You don't always get that in shows/movies. And Don has needed to get out of his honeymoon phase for a while, but I cant believe he just left her!
Roger is basically doing a Pedro-Martinez-in-1999 right now. His performance so far this season has been great. I feel like they stopped featuring him as much last season, so I'm glad he's back in the forefront.
And I'm definitely on board the "more Peggy" train. She's fantastic.

I do too.
The whole show is on quite a run right now. I can't spot a weak link.

I have seen an episode or two of this show and liked it. But what really amazes me is how so many of you have time to watch stuff on TV. Granted, I have a job, but so do many of you. I do have kids, but so do many of you. Mine aren't small which should give me more time.
I just can't seem to watch TV. I enjoy it but can't sit still long enough without thinking I should be doing something else, I guess.
It is amazing how this show continually gets better. This season has truly been fantastic. This past week when Don admitted to Joan that she scared the hell out of him was priceless. More Joan and Don scenes!
@zen I don't have kids so I'm sure I have a lot more free time than you do but DVR is the best thing to ever happen to T.V.
YES - I LOVE Don and Joan scenes. To be honest - I feel like, this more refined/faithful/head-on-his-shoulders Don would make a great partner with Joan. Obvs it's not gonna happen, and I kinda don't want it to, but they'd be great together. A) Joan knows a woman's place (to a point) in her time period with regards to looks, demeanor, etc. and Don expects that out of a woman. B) She's classy as hell. And would be an ideal trophy wife on Don's arm at any party. C) Don can rule the world when he has the right support system. Joan can rule the world if she had the right man to stand behind (All this said in consideration of the time period, people.) D) Joan wouldnt take any poop from Don, and he's straightened up lately.
Even if it was just the two of them doing SOMETHING together at the office or whatever - they are kindred spirits. I love their interactions.

Roger should have a 30 minute show that airs immediately before Mad Men. Like a Mad Men pregame of sorts, where Roger literally pregames for things and gets hummers in the back rooms at upscale awards dinners, and the like.
Actually, how the hell has this not happened already?
That last scene with Don and Peggy might've been perfect.
Yeah, totally agree. I think the best scenes in TV shows are the ones where words are necessary. That scene, from the point she stuck her hand out to say goodbye, didn't need any words. Everyone who's watched the show in its entirety knew what each character was thinking. Loved this episode. This season might be the best ever.
I just paged down so fast right now - my stupid cable is out, so I haven't seen this ep yet - and Holls told me it was amazing - and this thread keeps blowing up - but I dont want to ruin it for myself! So I just wanted to say, Im jumping in on the convo after I get my cable back and ondemand this shiz.

There are, um, other means of acquiring episodes of Mad Men.
I finally watched the episode last night (on Amazon for $2) and it was great. But after reading y'all's comments, things did not happen how I imagined them to happen. I hope so badly that Peggy is going to continue to be a big contributor to the show. I also wish that Joan would have been considered for partnership based on merit. Anyone else think Don went from "Peggy, you are so full of shit, quit bothering me by acting like you are such a big deal" to "Oh my god, my sweet Peggy. This is heartbreaking" a little too abruptly? He has treated her horribly most of this season, he had to see this coming, ESPECIALLY after hitting her in the face with money!

I think the Peggy/Don dynamic is pretty interesting. Don is the least affectionate guy to ever exist, and Peggy seems like a person who wants to be pat on the back and told "good job." They're not a match, but Don saw that Peggy had balls and (trying to supplant myself in the 60's since I wasn't even a tadpole yet) probably impressed Don with how she didn't just accept her "sex-appropriate" job.
I think the moment you're questioning is when Don finally realized how much he took Peggy for granted, and how he probably wished he was a bit nicer to her. But he also realizes that she is his prodige, and much like Don himself, she has become a very headstrong and career-driven person.
I think the swirl of emotion watching someone he groomed and grew to care about leave and finally realizing his appreciation for her was the cause of his solemn farewell.
I think the money thing, and the reaction of Harry and Kenny to it, gave Don a reality check of sorts. He goes unquestioned in his firm because he's the creative genius, so it's rare he receives a negative reaction. He got one there, and I think it registered deeply with him given who the target of the abuse was.

I mostly agree with flanzo. Not only has Don always taken Peggy for granted, he's also always taken for granted his ability to hold onto her. There was that similar scene in the season 3 finale where he successfully talked her into moving to SCDP by revealing how much her actually cared for her and valued her talent. And then there's The Suitcase, where they were also able to reach a resolution. The scene with Freddy in the diner is critical to setting up that final scene because it lets us know that Peggy fully understands her relationship with Don. There's that great line where Freddy asks if she's ambitious or if she just really likes to complain, and she asks why she can't be both. She knows she has value to SCDP and to Don personally, but she also wonders how high she could go if she breaks from her professional co-dependent relationship with Don. The money in her face might have been the incident that led to her conversation with Freddy, but it's her ambition that ultimately led her out the door.
I think Don's reaction makes sense. For starters, he's been distracted by the pitch and the Joan business, so his head is elsewhere when the conversation starts. And once it does start, he's just certain it's Peggy attempting to climb the ladder again. They have had these conversations before regarding money, respect, responsibility. He finally realizes she's serious and the bottom drops out. I think it's better for its suddenness.
Also, jackicker, I would have loved to see Joan promoted on merit, and god knows she would have deserved it, but I thought the impossibility of that EVER happening was what led her to seize the opportunity. She knows how this male dominated business works, and if she had forgotten, she got a nice little reminder when Lane revealed the proposition had been discussed by the partners. It reinforced her place in the company, which probably made her particularly vulnerable to Lane's suggestion. Marriage didn't play out like it was supposed to, and she's still just a piece of meat to the senior partners, despite basically running the place. This was her way into something better.
