If you were teaching a college course with that title, what are the 15 or so songs that you would include as the most important? Name as many as you want, up to 15, and be specific about the recording and performer.
The reason I'm asking, beyond curiosity, is that I have a Lebanese-born friend who just received his U.S. citizenship and was asking me for a mix CD that includes "nice" songs that he "should know".
A Day In the Life - The Beatles For What its Worth - Buffalo Springfield I've Been Loving you too Long - Otis Redding Like A Rolling Stone - Dylan A Change Is Gonna Come - Sam Cooke London Calling - The Clash The Weight - The Band
It's too bad there are so few good radio stations these days or I would say just turn him on to a good Golden Oldies station. There used to be a great station that played all the great stuff from the 50s and 60s that I would listen to when I was supposed to be sleeping in elementary school that I know laid the foundation for my musical knowledge and love.
U2- With or without you, Tom Petty- Free Fallin, Iggy Pop- Lust for Life, R.E.M. - Losing my Religion, Neil Young- Heart of Gold, Prince- When doves cry, The Doors- Light my Fire, Al Green- Down by the river, Rolling Stones- You can't always get what you want, Willie Nelson- on the road again, Elvis Costello- Watching the Dective, Billy Joel- Piano Man...thats all i have for now

Quite the challenge, Steve. 100+ years in 15 tracks. This one would at least get him to 1997. order is tentative.
Louis Armstrong - West End Blues Gershwin - Rhapsody In Blue (any good recording will do. I'm partial to the one with the piano roll performed by Gershwin) Robert Johnson - Devil Got My Woman Elvis - Blue Suede Shoes Buddy Holly - Not Fade Away The Beatles - I Saw Her Standing There Miles Davis - Jeru Rolling Stones - Paint It, Black Velvet Underground - All Tomorrow's Parties Hendrix - Hey Joe Otis Redding - I've Been Loving You Too Long (Monterey Pop version) The Ramones - Judy Is A Punk R.E.M. - Orange Crush Nirvana - Sliver Radiohead - Paranoid Android
