Or in the past forty years? Too many magnum opus's released that year, if you had to start a festival with the album's released that year, who would it be?
Bands that released albums (in order): Do your homework!
My main acts would be:
U2 - Michael Jackson (before he was a child perv) - Grateful Dead - Metallica (LN) - R.E.M. (LN) - Red Hot Chili Peppers - NWA - De La Soul then you throw in the up and comers such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Widespread Panic, Smashing Pumpkins, A Tribe Called Quest, Blues Traveler (they were good then), Spin Doctors, etc. Too many to name.

Up and coming hip hop acts could include 2Pac, Cypress Hill, Leaders of the New School, all of which released their debut albums that year. I guess Ugly Kid Joe could be a cafe act.

Sorry, right now, I think 1991 slays 1997.
ahaha you're absolutely right. My 1997 bias was a bit of a joke, hence the reference to Limp Bizkit's debut album.
