As a large majority of you are aware, congress is currently working on the SOPA and Protect IP in the Senate and House. Both of these are overly broad copyright censorship mechanisms which would be prone to abuse and lead to censorship among other things.
I just read that the DNS provisions got tossed out of the SOPA bill which is a small victory, but there is no victory if either of these bills get passed.
I have posted about DMCA earlier since I have had my youtube account shut down from 3 DMCA copyright violations for posting concert footage on youtube (2 Bob Dylan at ACL videos and Crystal Castles at Glastonbury). Although technically those artists are within their rights under the DMCA provision, SOPA would be far worse and could make it criminal copyright infringement for a mere violation or even posting an unauthorized link on a public forum. The powers granted would be prone to abuse and there is no innocent infringement provision at the moment.
I urge everyone to contact their representatives to let them no we are opposed to legislation of this type. It would affect free speech along with copyright issues.
Feel free to discuss or post links as needed.
When my youtube account was shutdown, I had 1000+ videos, 1.8 million views, 500 subscribers and 3000+ views per day. There was no way I could fight the shutdown once it occurred. I just lost all the work I put into it.

They didn't even give you a warning to take down the videos? They just outright shut down your account?!
Sorry to hear that man. That's some garbage right there. 3000 views per day could contribute a good clickthru rate for their advertising dollars... why just outright shut down accounts? In my eyes, they are losing $$$ by doing that.
The Obama administration's memo doesn't promise a veto. It merely condemns the DNS filtering portion of SOPA/PIPA which is now being re,moved. Even without the DNS provisions this bill is a dangerous attempt to suppress free speech with due process. Look at the fallout rideincircles received from a DMCA notice.
IF SOPA/PIPA is enacted Inforoo (for example) could be shut down merely because someone posts a link to a download that the government THINKS is copyright protected. No trial, no discussion, no appeal.

Bring on Darknet. The real tragedy here is that the government thinks it can legislate these issues away. They just can't. I was in China a few months ago and with little effort could get to any content I wanted. Regardless of what technical measure they employ (DNS entry removal, legal threats, packet interception) people will work around it in short order. The only solution to this problem is to offer content that people feel good about buying. The concept that everyone is a thief is ridiculous. Offer a good product at a fair price and people will buy media content in higher percentages than they buy insurance.
The continuously growing awareness of these bills and their potentially negative consequences combined with their totally lack of ability to achieve their intended purpose makes them unlikely to be passed even in an altered form.
I don't know the specifics of either bill but I think this fight over what constitutes free speech on the internet will eventually come down to a Supreme Court decision. I haven't paid that close of attention the the SC for a year or two but I believe they would come down on the side of Free Speech

Just read that SOPA will be up for mark-up again in February. Lamar smith is the main culprit deciding this since he is in charge of the House Judiciary Committee and decides what bills get voted on. He also brought about the DMCA and would not allow The Marijuana Prohibition act to be voted on. His seat has a tremendous amount of power.
