So we have a lot of people joining us for Roo this year! We have a Chevy Impala 4 door, and we are looking at about 5 people joining us so we won't have room for all of us AND all of our Roo gear. We have looked into renting an SUV or mini van, and have found a few with unlimited miles (we are coming down from Chicago), but the gas would be about double what we pay for our little car We have also looked into trailers for the back of the car, but getting a trailer hitch on our car would cost about as much as a rental car before we even get into the price of the trailer itself. Another option is to drive two seperate cars and park next to eachother, but that could be tricky. I was wondering if anyone would recommend a rental over a car-top storage unit, or visa versa, and what different car-top units have worked for you in the past? Our biggest concerns with the rental car are gas and the worry of using a car that isn't ours, but it is starting to look like the best option. Thanks for your input!

I don't know about the the storage units. Taking two cars can be tricky, but it would net you around double the space when it comes to camping time. Since you're driving a long distance, just stay in contact via cell phone or pick a meeting point near Roo (i.e. the Wal-Mart) to get together at before you get in line.
If you think a car top cargo carrier would give you enough room then that will probably be the most economical. If you are looking for a hard shell (best weather protection) or a soft carrier look at your local craigs list. I'm sure you could find something in the used department.
Renting a SUV or Mini van would also be a good option. Provided that the renter and driver are 25 years of age. This would give you more room for gear and five people. Make sure if there is any additional insurance available that you take it. You never know.
A second car is not a bad idea either. Have a meeting spot 25 miles away from the exit and meet up there. More room for gear, people and camping area. Keeping together will not be a problem. Just stay in line together and make people aware that you are together.
