Rooin' since '05...(except 2014...worst June of my life!)
"Hey Peter Frampton! Do you like toast too? Yes, as do I. It is warm and crispy, and a perfect place for jelly to lay. Now stay the hell away from me Frampton, I ain’t got sh*t to say to you!"
Here's my attempt to flesh out the City and Colour guess.
Since part of the clue is "Syrup and Juice" and our answer is "____" and "____", I think you're supposed to replace syrup and juice with other words. Orange is a type of juice, and its also a color. So the second blank would be Color/Colour. The syrup bit is a stretch, but Canada is the largest producer of maple syrup and that's where Dallas Green was born.
The second sentence is almost a direct quote.
"In late 2010, Dallas had been in the studio with Polaris Prize nominee Shad working on a remix of a Shad song as well as an original song to be released as a 12″ vinyl single. Dallas was quoted as saying “I’ve always wanted to be the Mary J. Blige to somebody’s Method Man”."
once again: The clue says merry, not mary. If this were pointing towards a clue about Mary J. Blige then it would be spelled right. It's not like color and colour which mean the same thing. Mary and Merry are completely different.

I don't think the Mary/merry thing knocks it out. In fact I think it helps.
"I'm not the merry to your method" the opposite could be "I am the Mary to your Method"
(if the clue was "I am the merry to your method" I would agree this is totally off)
However, I think we're trying to hard on the Syrup and Juice part which makes me nervous. I was even scouring Google for references to the band members doing syrup or juice cleanses and couldn't find anything.
the opposite of merry isn't Mary. And this doesn't help at all.
Mary is a name, it's capitalized and spelled differently.
merry is an adjective meaning lively and cheerful.
the opposite of "I'm not the merry(adjective) to your method" would in no way be "I'm the Mary(not adjective. Name.) to your method". It would be "I'm the merry to your method".
Yeah...I thought the Bass/fish think was outrageous as well. I just didn't say anything. It's easy to get carried away to make these things fit almost anything.
On a more constructive not. Here are some other bands that fit the "___" and "___" :
G. Love and Special Sauce Mumford and Sons Fitz and The Tantrums Florence and The Machine Michael Franti and Spearhead Wavves and Best Coast Iron and Wine
Of course there are bigger names that also fit such as:
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band Bob Seger and The silver Bullet Band Basically any one person And their band.
What about Method Man & Redman? Or just Redman himself? Or Redman & Snoop?
- Redman has an mix tape called Pancakes & Syrup. Snoop dogg is of course associated with Gin & Juice. - One of Redman's more popular songs is called Merry Jane, which features Nate Dogg (RIP) and Snoop Dogg. - Redman has done lots of stuff with Method, including the B-side (blow treez) of the Merry Jane record.

I wouldn't rule out connections to people named Mary just because the word in the clue is merry. The clues are no stranger to wordplay. And if it was referring to MJB and Method Man, using "Mary" would be awfully obvious. Not that using "merry" makes it all that enigmatic, but who knows, maybe it seemed like it would be enough to slow us down.
Not that I'm supporting that particular connection, just sayin' I wouldn't rule out "Mary" - we've screwed ourselves up over and over by ruling things out when we shouldn't have.
