So I had this idea a couple of weeks ago. I know I don't want to have my iphone on me in the festival grounds and leaving it in a hot campsite is not much better. So I have decided that I am going to buy a prepaid phone just for the trip. I know the AT&T gophone plan has a $10 airtime card you can use with the $2 unlimited plan ( which means once you use the phone on that day $2 is taken from the account time). There is also a phone availible for purchase for $10 (or if you have an old AT&T phone you can just change sim cards). I'm posting because A.) I was not sure if anyone had any info on how well the coverage was for AT&T at the farm and B.) I thought it might a good idea to share for those who don't want have to worry about an expensive phone in a place where inhibitions are thrown to the wind.

I want to say i remember that ATT's reception is terrible on the Farm, but I couldn't say with 100% certainty. I have US Cellular and mine works great.
During the day, at the What/Which and That/This tents it will work. Once you go PAST that, into the vender/silent disco/the other tent area, it will stop working.
Also at the What Stage during the headlining shows, it will not work, too many people in the area using their phone.
Both hubby and I have iPhones and AT&T and we didn't have one problem with our phones last year. We even had then on us and on the whole time since we had kids we left at grandma's and needed to check on. I was worried about it last year because I heard it was sketchy but we were fine.

I suspect there will be additional trouble with iphones this year. The new iMessage feature draws more data than a traditional text.* I'm going to make sure everyone in my group has imessage off for the weekend.
*i am not a scientist and this may be totally incorrect
You just have to learn some self control during the weekend. Last year I took my power hinfry HTC EVO 4G with a spare battery and a solar charger. The solar charger didn't do anything in respect to gaining a charge because there was no way I could position it right to actually charge up. I did however have it fully charged when I got there and it helped boost the battery to almost full. Then I used the spare battery after that. Lasted me the whole weekend. You just have to manage the services on it. If you have an Android turn off your background data. this greatly improves battery life. Also, turn your screen brightness down as much as you can stand. Lastly, only use your phone to make calls and text. Do not bother with updating Facebook, checking your e-mail or tweeting about an epic show. All of this will reduce your battery life greatly. Just tonight I tried to upload a video on Facebook and it took half of my battery life to do it and failed to upload I guess what I'm saying is only use it as an internal communication tool within bonnaroo. If you can't just buy a bunch of spare batteries.

Another thought about iPhones, you can keep it in a ziplock bag and the touchscreen will still work fairly well. So if you want it with you but are worried about dropping it in the mud then that might be a good solution
