So it's been five years since we went to roo, mostly because we've opted for closer festivals that aren't quite as.... hot. But this year we're making our return. I recall from our past years that many people do put their tents under a canopy tent, or under tarps. Does this actually work? Part of me always thought it would just hold in more heat. Is this actually the secret to getting an extra hour or two of sleep in the morning?

I started with an EZ-Up over the tent, then cots in the tent, finally cots under the EZ-Up. Unless it's raining or otherwise miserable I just use the tent for storage and changing.
EZ-Up + 2 large tarps + 2 (or more!) battery-operated fans = comfortable sleeping past 8am.
Just make sure you have enough batteries for the fans...the only thing worse than trying to sleep in the heat is losing the fans once you've gotten hooked on 'em.

THIS! Yep. I slept 'til 10 each morning easily. The only thing I would add is: Get a couple of those cheap silver "emergency" blankets. Turn them silver side out and attack somehow to your tent or EZ up. They deflect the sun great.
another good trick to keep cool is whenever you refill your cooler with ice, to lay a towel on top of the ice and close the cooler, come back in a couple of hours when the sun is at its hottest and take the icy towel and drip it over your shoulders/face etc. Its beyond heavenly.
I debated for a solid ten minutes whether to post this picture... it's not very flattering nor extremely appropriate. But posting a pic taken of me and my fan usage at Roo in 2010 is just too perfect following Druid's.
EDIT: Phi's NSFW comment made me scared. I'm deleting!
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
I am able to sleep most of the day in my reclining camp chair under the EZ-Up. Pretty sure I didn't wake up until 1 PM on Sunday last year. Tents at Roo are good for overflow sleeping, storage, intimate times, and rainy times. Also, I guess if you think people stare at you while you sleep because they totally do. What we can all agree, though, is how essential shade is no matter how you choose to use it.
