As a pale individual I don't do well in the sun. Does anyone know any tricks other than lots of suncreen, a floppy hat, and lots of aloe for dealing with the sun? I would hate to be too fried(literally) to enjoy the weekend.

1) Make sure you're using a high SPF sunscreen. 2) Realize that you may need to reapply during the day regardless what the bottles says about it not rubbing off. 3) Get some shade when you can. 4) If Abra can get through Roo without being burnt to a crisp, anybody can get through Roo without being burnt to a crisp.
I think you've got it covered! LOTS of sunscreen. Reapply every couple hours, and every time you get wet (fountain, mist tents, slide, etc.) Don't forget the backs of your knees, your feet, and your ears! Wear a shirt that covers your shoulders.

Uh I don't know about that. When siggy came up to visit in the fall and we sat on the porch for morning coffee he got burnt. His level of white is on a whole other spectrum.

Might try getting a base tan and wearing those long sleeved shirts with the holes to let the air blow through. My brother got some from some of the day laborers he works with.
Besides all the good advice already given, there is really a lot of shade under the music tents, and shady places to eat, hydrate and cool off. My hair is thinning on the top of my head, so a big, floppy hat is mandatory. Make a conscious effort to seek shade during the peak uv periods, which are just small segment of the total Bonnaroo day.

Yeah, forget fashion and how you look for those four days. Giant hat, sunscreen, zinc, etc are a must. I also recommend a bandana to drape over the back of your neck and another one bandit style around your throat (if the dust from last year is back this will be as helpful as anything in your arsenal)

Hit the tanning beds on low levels a couple weeks out to prepare you skin.
When you wake up in the morning after you hit the shower (if you shower), apply the lotion sunscreen. Have a friend help with the hard to reach areas. If you wear sandals DO NOT FORGET YOUR FEET. I some how always manage to get in an aerosol can with me, and use that to reapply throughout the day. I don't want other people to touch my gross self, nor do I want to touch them. Worst case scenario, always look for the four girls sitting on a blanket. Guarenteed one of them will have sunscreen so you can reapply.
If they don't share with you, that's bad Karma. If they do, pay a favor forward to some one else.
My first Roo I bought a straw hat with a wide bendable brim. The straw allows for maximum ventilation so it keeps my scalp cool and the brim can be manipulated to provide shade for whichever way the sun happens to be hitting you. I still have it and will use it again this year. Not a bad $10 investment. I agree that you don't want a hat that will only make you sweat like a pig in a pit but the straw is so light and airy that I don't mind wearing it at all. Lots of great tips in this thread.

My advice to first timers regarding sun and heat: I always use location as a tie breaker. During the day, If you are on the fence between seeing a tent show or a which/what show, choose the tent show. The heat can be vicious, so get shade when you can. Eat in shaded, tented areas, go anyplace with air conditioning. Walk through the misting tents on your way between shows. Hydrate often. Use a bottle/can of sunscreen daily. Have a good time. Don't drink too much. Drink too much water. If you are tired, sit down and find a place to get out of the heat for a few minutes. Have a good time. That's about it.

Thank you! I have one that my grandma would wear when she swam (she beat skin cancer about ten years ago) but I was so rushed I forgot it. I'm going to try to attach some fabric, a bandanna perhaps, inside so I can soak it with cold water, haha.
MiraCool bandana's are great. Throw them in the cooler for just a bit - then they stay cold for a few hours. And you can get them quite inexpensively online especially if you get 10 or more. (buck or less a piece.) We each would take 4 or 5 with us into Centeroo and give them out each day. They were much appreciated.
Please, please ignore the advice to go use tanning beds. They have been classified as carcinogenic to humans which is the highest cancer-risk category, which also includes radon gas, plutonium and radium! Using tanning beds before age 30 increases your risk of developing skin cancer by 75 percent and melanoma by 20 percent (that's the shit that kills you)
Follow instead the advice of people talking about sunscreen, shade, hats. etc. I've had two different kinds of cancer already (one diagnosed the month after last years Roo).
I use the spray sunscreen because it is so easy to reapply, which in turn makes it a lot more likely that I will.
I fully agree with this, and it's a lot easier than any cream. Plus there is a ton of products out there for sensitive skin; i use neutrogena daily and it offer's excellent protection and it's super light weight.

End of rant, see you in the shade in June
I agree and disagree with you there Kat. Guess I need to research more. I am 99.9% against tanning. Beds are the worst. But i do go three times prior to Roo over the course of a month or two. Not beds, booths - 4 minutes each time. Not that they are any better. I'm a fanatic about sun screen, bring my sun umbrella at all times. However there is not lot of shade at Roo. Debate on... which is worse.. pretanning briefly!! or getting a burn asks the freckled red hed???

I agree totally here too, a good base tan is a must. I got mine on my morning run's last year, it totally helps .

^ QUAAAACK THIS! Sorry man, I'm sure you mean well, but BOOOOOO on the quick-fry your skin suggestion! Fair-skinned people like me can't get "base tans" so it's a waste of time and money...not to mention an unnecessary skin-damaging health risk. (That's my dermatologist's speech.)
Look, if I were any paler, I'd be translucent! I use TONS of the highest SPF available. I wear a hat, a bandanna, sunglasses, long flowing skirts.... and I STILL GET BURNT.
Your best bet is to wear sunscreen & shade, plus limit your daytime exposure! Going to a tent show? Stand in the covered area. In between sets? Find some shade. Wear the lightest colors possible.
I got this nasty burn on my calves (where my sarong didn't cover) while sitting on the bleachers during 3 back-to-back Which Stage sets: ^ This was early that evening...it was much worse the next day!
Even when you try your best & apply sunscreen all damn day, your fair skin will be damaged by exposure. PLEASE pack some after-burn gel. Aloe and lanacaine are miraculous once you become lobsterish! Good luck!
