Yeah, I've always gone tanning a few weeks before hand and have been able to avoid getting burnt.
Although, in 2010 I think I got sunburn under my tan, if thats possible. I woke up Sunday morning and my skin felt really cold.. like i had this chill from the inside, but I was hot to the touch. It was weird..

Did you just have chills? Sounds like it could have been sun poisoning.

I have fair skin also. I have been using Neutrogena spray-on sunscreen for my past 3 'Roos and I haven't gotten sunburned yet! You just have to remember to reapply a couple of times a day. This is my favorite. (make sure to get a high spf!)

My friend that comes with me is ultra pale and does not tan. She uses SPF 100 spray sunscreen (neutrogena) and we apply it often. She has never burned at Roo. She usually wears sundresses like the rest of us and has never really needed to totally cover up.
Its hard with all this going around. I myself am a very pale human being and I honestly do both things I go ..about now get a tanning package that last 3 month..its a little more $$ but I only tan in beds that are 90% uvb 10% uva they are what laymen refer to as "browning" bulbs they dont absorb the skin as deep. The other side is uva bulbs they are reffere to as "redding" as the name implies they redning. They aren't for people like you and I. I only go for like 3 minutes then gradually(keyword gradually) move to 5-8 minute this usually takes a month. This creates a subtle base tan and then for roo I us a 50 spf but note make sure it doesnt contain retinoyl palmitate been known to cause cancer...Check this first en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunscreen Because of alot of these revalations I only use organic sunscreen. ***As with everything you need to use moderation alot of people assume things without checking it out....Thye assume lather yourself up with sunscreen boom! your good, but your applying a chemical to the largest organ on your body. You need to know what it is and if its banned people usually don't know this but alot of discount store sell lotiuon that are banned in european countries but havent been banned (yet) by the USA....That being said over using a tanning bed without the proper indoor tanning education can also be at risk for harming yourself...imagine sitting in the sun too long you obviously know its bad. Read this www.beachbum.com/about-us/tanning-truth So basically a little bit of both would be fine if you educate yourself properly I have not gone home with a sunburn ever(currently knocking on wood)
If you think you may be getting a sunburn, you already have one. Sunburns can cause dehydration, painful blisters and an overall terrible time once you've been burned. If you get burned early on in the Roo experience, it's going to make the heat 10x hotter. Lather up with a high SPF sunscreen often and find shade when you can. Good luck to all us fair skinned folks.
Chiming in with love for the spray-on stuff (any brand really). I sprayed about every hour and had a clippy sunscreen lotion for my face that I applied every two hours since I was wearing a big hat. I ended the weekend with only a little red on my nose, which was a resounding triumph for me after years of bad burns.
I couldn't stand wearing a hat the entire time, I'd get so hot so if you take the same route be sure to apply sunscreen to your scalp too!
I found a panama jack type hat, with mesh on the vertical sides...lets in lots of air....it never gets hotter than the surrounding air....keeps the sun off the head (ok, hair challenged), ears, neck, and face.....sunscreen everywhere else....and a decent tan at the end.
I'm trying the linen long sleeves and drawstring pants this year. What I remember most from last year was the feeling of hot sun on already burned skin.

Honestly, I stayed obsessively in the shade and kept applying spray sunscreen and I was fine. Just ended up with a ton of freckles, no burn (which is sort of amazing... I can and have been burned through the windows of a car, that's how pale I am!!).
I did tend to skip the mid-day shows which was fine for me. Saw everything I wanted to after 3pm. But that was more due to my heat intolerance than sun.
One thing: I think I overdid it with sunscreen on my face. I was scared to burn and probably reapplied 6 times a day. The skin on my face got really irritated from all that, and peeled afterward. So I'd suggest bringing sensitive baby sunscreen for your face and spray stuff for everywhere else. Us pale ones tend to be a little sensitive too.
^ MIZVALENTINE!!! Hey there, doll face! (side note: hope I get to see you again at Quack Club II!)
You've got great skin tone, so all the precautions you've taken over the years are working for you! You're about as pale as me. I never used sensitive/baby sunscreen on my face, but I doubt a peel from the use of it is worse than peeling from sun exposure. Maybe that was just your skin's way of saving you $$$ at a salon on an overpriced chemical peel?

^mizvalentine said it "baby sunscreen" it is IMO the best stuff, it is made for baby's for crying out loud.As my name suggests, find the shade.I use Big ol straw hat, cut holes in top to ventilate even more. Also, LL Bean sells these long sleeve button up shirts, that are made to wear in the heat, are highly breathable. And offer UV protection, check that out. Every engineer I work with in Florida wears these shirts. Watch out for that behind the calf burn like Holls, its a sneaky sunburn, along with tops of ears. Last year there was a sports bar with some good A/C in between other tent and that tent if I remember, I would actually take power naps in there, shhhh. Good luck my friend here is that shirt. www.llbean.com/llb/shop/20471?feat=510857-GN3
Not all shade is created equal! An umbrella is great for long lines, but not all umbrellas, hats, clothing, or even shade tents protect against sunburn equally. Look for shade tents (or umbrellas) with a silvery reflective coating on the underside. Make sure clothing you are depending on for sun protection has a UV rating.
Plan to apply sunscreen twice each morning, last year I missed a swath of my shoulder and just that burning made me pretty unhappy the next day. If you spray on twice before getting major sun exposure you limit the chance that you will forget to spray somewhere.
I'm happy I found this thread and I'm glad to see I'm not alone! I never had a chance--I'm a hopeless redheaded, Scotts-Irish lady with "see-through" skin. I don't ever tan. I BURN.
I had relative success at Coachella with the spray-on sun screen you're mentioning. I applied it two or three times a day and turned out okay. Plus, it feels so good to spray on since its a cold burst. Very refreshing.
I'm just nervous because I realize that the climates I've been to for previous festivals differ from the farm at Bonnaroo (Washington for Sasquatch, Cali for Coachella, FL for DeLuna and Chicago for Lolla)--I've heard horror stories of the heat in TN in mid-summer. I don't know how much more I can prepare. I suppose I'll start slapping on the gradual tan lotion or start looking for groupons for spray tans for the illusion of natural color. I'll just be sure to slather on sun screen like its going out of style and stay in the shade as much as possible.

Forget the umbrella advice. All you will do is piss off the people behind you at concerts. Also, it's just another thing to have to carry around, like those quacking camelbacks, etc. Carry cargo pants and keep high SPF factor sunscreen, bought from Walmart in those mini sizes, in one of the pockets. Make sure to cover the back of your neck and the top of your feet. Wear a hat but pack 2 or 3 because 1 tends to get dirty, grimey and sweaty after a couple of days. Forget about seeking shade because the few shade trees there are in Centeroo have hippies laying under them in every shaded spot. Just avoid the what and which stages during the afternoon and you will be fine. Except for Grace Potter last year (Friday, 3 pm what stage), I followed all of the above advice and I'm fair skinned too.

I would also suggest the umbrella, and there are also chairs that have the over head umbrella. There is a product called Solar Recovery must have, it is mist feels great, and works magic, always helps when wifey works at whole foods and brings home the good stuff. check it out. www.solarrecover.com/index.php
come in out of the sun every once in a while and cool off then ask someone if you look like you are burning. when you are out in the sun and wearing sun glasses you cant always tell that you are burning. other people can tell better. however, i am hesitant to tell someone they are burning cause i dont want to be negative. ask your roosters - we will tell you
My whole crew is pretty much super pale. Including one friend who is like Holls and can't get a base tan for nothing. She goes straight from pale to burnt... no tan in-between.
We use the Neutrogena 70 spf spray (though the highest you really need is 50), cover ourselves in that stuff, and re-apply regularly. We use sunscreen lotion on our faces
My friend wears hats, and flowy clothes that cover more
We definitely limit our daytime sun exposure. If we're out in centeroo, we spend most of it under tents.

Aw thanks lady, and back atcha!! Hoping to make Quack Club happen...past few months have been nuts, we're soooooo ready to party!

i'm super fair-skinned and can't tan for anything. gf is the same way.
agree with others on using the baby sunscreen, and taking spray sunscreen so it's easier/quicker to apply. i also take a tiny container of sunscreen just for my face, and have a friend check to make sure i haven't missed anything when i'm done. sunburns suck; funky sunburns are the worst.
also, remember to get your first coat on in the early morning/afternoon before you leave camp. stay in the shade for 30 min or so and let it soak in before heading out into the sun.
don't forget to drink lots of water. dehydrated skin will burn worse/faster.
A loose long sleeve shirt (maybe linen?) will likely keep you about as cool as short sleeves and will keep the sun off your skin. And ditto for remembering to sunscreen your scalp!
