Hey guys sorry if this has been addressed already...This will be my first time going to Bonnaroo this year. I got an RV for the trip, and was wondering how early I could leave the fest on Sunday.
All my friends who have gone before usually stay till Monday morning, but I need to get out of there by like midnight on Sunday....is this going to be a colossal mess getting out?
Leaving early is far easier from RV than from GA where everyone's packed like sardines in a tin can. You should be fine. But it wouldn't hurt to alert your neighbors in advance, just as a courtesy.
Even in GA, by late morning Sunday so many people were clearing out. We were out in BFE in Pod 11 and we were planning on leaving after the Strokes and we packed up and drove closer to Centeroo and just parked our truck all packed up. We had no problems getting out, manuevering through the camp grounds or finding a closer spot. I was actually surprised at how many people left on Sunday.
I never understand why people leave Sunday. I know people have to work, but why not take Monday off (that is what I do). If you are going to pay the money for 4 days then stay for 4 days.

1) Lack of vacation days. Working Monday can help shave one off what Bonnaroo requires. 2) Long trips home. My drive back to Knoxville isn't bad, but some people have really long trips back and have to leave Sunday to make it back to get home and be ready for work on Tuesday. 3) They miss home. I got kids. The main reason I went with going home Sunday my first year was I missed the wife and kids. 4) Strict schedules. I am lucky to work at a place where my boss is super flexible with the schedule. I can take off basically whenever I want . Some people are not so lucky and have work where they're lucky to be off Thursday to Sunday much less adding another day on there.
Just about every year I plan to stay through Sunday and every year on Sunday morning I wake up, take a look around, say "I'm over this. Let's go.", and start packing with no objections from campmates. I can't explain why this happens. Fatigue and the dread of a long drive home probably. But for the OP, I don't usually have an issue getting out. Last year was the first year I wasn't on a clear cut edge that I could just drive out of without bothering anyone, so we just waited for it to clear down a bit and found a pathway left by other deserters. My advice is to make sure you can get out before you tear your camp down in case you do get stranded inland.
And telling your neighbors is also a good idea. One year, we were on an edge, but the giant truck that pulled up behind us was doing Tent Only. Luckily, my mom had the presence of mind to mention it to them as I was concentrated on the land-grab and she switched cars with them so we could be right on the road and able to leave whenever we wanted. Also, that monstrosity of a truck being right next to our tent provided some extra shade in the morning. It was so much win.

Same thing with us, though we last a bit longer each year... lol. First year we had no sun protection and a shitty leaky tent and it got flooded so we left Saturday evening. Second year, we left Sunday morning. Last year we stayed til about 6pm on Sunday then left (which was a terrible idea, driving in the dark for 13 hours while super exhausted is not a smart idea).
Hoping to stay til Monday this year, for safety sake if nothing else.

I took monday off but we expected to leave sunday evening. I don't understand how anyone could return from Roo then go to work the next day. I gotta decompress at least 24 hours before coming back to reality, too much of a shock to the system. Returning to an office full of people who have NO CLUE as to what I've just experienced is weird. Everyone just seems really weird to me and I imagine I must seem off to them as well.
As to OP. You'll be fine. We went RV and had no trouble at all leaving. After pulling out of our spot we were on the HWY in 10 minutes if that.
We left last Sunday about 7-8 because we aren't WP fans and we wanted to stop at a hotel before our long drive home. If we had waited until Monday to leave the day would have been a lot longer and more hectic. We also have kids to get back to and we are trying to make it easier on our babysitters too. We'll probably do the same thing this year if Phish is closing. We aren't jam band fans so it works out to leave early.
In 2010, I stayed until Monday morning. In 2011, I left Sunday night, because I was beginning to feel pretty shitty. This year I'm staying until Monday morning again. Getting home Sunday night and knowing that Bonnaroo was still going on was a huge regret that I don't want to make again.
Plus, Monday is when you get all the good ground scores!
I usually take down camp and pack up Sunday morning, then get a shower and if possible, move the car closer to Centeroo, then go check out any bands I want to see, knowing I'm clear to take off after the last one....usually pretty tired, so drive home, crawl into bed, and ready for work Monday.

I am a Sunday night departer. We generally pack up Sunday morning before going to Centeroo. When you get back, walk around your camp area and plot out your escape. It isn't always easy and you may have to drive around a little to find a route, but it is doable.
