Anyone ever try Swedish snus? Not the american stuff, but the "real" snus, like the General brand made by the Swedish Match company? There are substantive studies which find that Swedish made snus is drastically less carcinogenic then cigarettes or other smokeless tobaccos like dip or chew. Here is a brief article on the subject:
What is snus? It is a smokeless tobacco that produces far less "spit" then traditional dip or chew, so much less that you don't even have to spit.
The deal is, and I'm paraphrasing from memory here so forgive me if I get the science wrong, what makes tobacco release those 4,000 chemicals is when it is heated above a certain temperature. This includes lighting a cigarette or the cooking process for dip or chew. Snus is heated at a low enough temperature that significantly less carcinogens are produced.
Furthermore, back in the 80s the Swedish government passed regulation which began treating all tobacco products the same as food, so snus is regulated by their equivalent of our FDA. They also require that an ingredient list be put on all snus packages (wouldn't it be interesting if american cigarette companies had to do this).
So while snus isn't 100% safe, it is a hell of a lot safer then smoking cigarettes. This "harm reduction" strategy is becoming more popular as a way for nicotine addicts to get off cigarettes.
I love my snus. The buzz is way cleaner and longer lasting (i keep mine in for about an hour) then a cigarette. Cigarettes make me feel dizzy and crappy. Snus gives me a boost of energy and an overall pleasant well being feeling.
If you have tried quitting and been unsuccessful, I recommend giving swedish snus a shot. You can order it online, or if you're lucky like me your local tobacconist might stock it.
Sorry to sound like an advertisement but outside of quitting completely I think snus is another great way to save lives and health.
Here it goes... My Spring Break begins today so I have a week without Philosophy and Taoism assignments to keep me ancy. Finished my (please dear God) last pack this morning. Gonna sub with corn and walking to the park near my house.
Any other suggestions of activities to fill up those 20 five minute blocks of my day?
Keep yourself busy. Every time you feel like you could break down and light one up just get up and do something. Clean, work on laundry, take up a minor project at home like painting a room, anything. Keep toothpicks, gum, and/or straws in the car to keep your hands and mouth busy. Drink a lot of water and avoid any triggers for a while (i.e. beer). Good luck!
Thank you for your suggestions as well. I've spent most of my day cleaning and rearranging the house before the miss got home, which served well as a distraction. By the way, love your Cat Side of the Moon avatar!

Broken down and bought a pack on Wed of this week. Smoked out of it at night when I was home from work and enjoying a beer. Didnt bother taking any cigarettes with me to work each of those days and the pack lasted until this morning. I still feel guilty as hell about it and am now back to not buying any smokes. Fuck this is hard.
Hang in there!!! I'm down to roughly a pack a month, from what used to be a pack every two day habit!! I caved in a week or so back, so don't feel like you are the only one. Its been another 6 days without one....I agree its really tough.
I had a friend that has been smoking for seven years and just quit last month by using Chantix. Not so sure about the side effects, but she is completely done smoking. I never thought I'd see the day.
Burt Squitters! That is good and I would like to call it that. Hit Patrol is too Mafia, Butt Squitters has a certain appeal to it. Smoking Cigs is Dirty, so is Butt Squittering. Nice one, I like it Mike D! We could have buttons, with just those words. Butt Squitters! It would help identify who is not to be smoking. Although, you can take the button off, butt if one day your wore the button, on a day a lot of people who know you, would see you, then they would know, maybe wear the button at Brunch. Would people be open to wear a button that reads: Butt Squitters! ? And be up for the challenge of explaining Butt Squitters, when asked?
Just know any shame and humiliation given to anybody who is a smoker and trying to quit and is found smoking a cig, any embarrassment is done in a tasteful manner with only good intentions, your health, "It is gonna hurt me a lot more to dump this water on you, than it will hurt you." Especially if I just bought it at Roo, I probably paid like 3 dollars for it. Seriously, we know it is hard, you have our support and we want to see you quit!

Heres what I know about quitting it has to be done without any form of neggative thought. By that I mean I used to smoke three packs a day and then I didn't and I never picked them up again. Now I used the patch and determination most of all determination to never have another one again. You can use any aid you want but determination not to smoke has to be number one on your list. GOOD LUCK to all of you.

Today marks 2 weeks quit aside from about a 14 hour lapse at Radiohead. I'm still using ecigs a few times a day and I've bought at total of 4 of them @ 8 bucks each. I lost one at Radiohead but still that's 32 bucks for two weeks as opposed to 55 bucks. I've seen about a 3-4 lb weight gain and I have been eating more since quitting. It's mostly from being bored. I'm not sure if I will smoke at Roo or not. It's pretty much the place where I allow myself to do whatever I don't in my everyday life.

How's all the Quiters out there in Inforoo-land? Success for you?
If I want to keep breathing and if I want to keep my heart beating I will want to quit. It's time. I put one out about 20 minutes ago. Twenty minutes seems to be my need cycle. I've heard all the tips and facts.

BLAH! I'm back to smoking. AFTER Roo though! I have to quit, I will quit!
Jerry, you can do this. Each time you pass one up you are letting your body start to heal it's self. It was always helpful when I quit to imagine the brown lung tissue turning pink when I decided not to smoke.

What happened to the e-cigs? My latest version of "quitting" is not smoking until I'm around someone who smokes, then bumming the hell out of them. But don't worry friends, I am going to bring my own to Bonnaroo.
At one festival I bought a pack, gave it to Mike D, and told him to make me pay him $1 every time I wanted to smoke one. I smoked quite a bit less that time.

I still use the ecigs when I'm around people who the smoke bothers a lot. I suppose I just need to out right quit and to do that I have to be in the right situations/frame of mind. After Roo I won't be doing another fest till Counterpoint or really going anywhere much so that will be perfect timing.
You totally got this. You already want to quit, that means something!! May sound too easy- but I just stopped going outside while at work and stopped buying them. Don't have them, can't smoke them. I know the addiction is different with different people and that that's not for everyone. Good luck!!

Chantix worked for me again. I quit for 4 years then started back at the end of ' 10. I've been smoke free now, without cravings, for a week. I smoked for two weeks while starting the medication then stopped on the third week. Only side effect for me has been mild nausea and more money in my wallet.

I'm with you. I don't smoke all day long at work and have a few in the evening. I smoke way too much when I'm at Roo but I also drink much more than in normal daily life. We, hubby and I are quitting after Roo but before Floydfest.
With the way we smoke I'm beginning to wonder if it is habit more than addiction.
BTW e-cigs are nice but they're not the same. You get the nicotine but not the satisfaction.

^^Truth
I've been doing the ecigs for about three months now...
True they are not the same, but they've worked for me. Aside from the nicotine, you get the tactile feel and a "smoking experience" much like coffin nails...
I've tapered way down so I only drag on it occasionally...

Day 3, cold turkey. Bonnaroo will definitely be a challenge, I may get some patches for insurance while I'm there. So far I've handled cravings by keeping a guitar nearby (something for my hands to do), meditation (something for my mind and breath to do) and for the really bad cravings, 20 pushups. And sometimes I get the munchies, but I'm trying to be really aware of that when it happens.

Encourage me, please.
I'm still smoke free believe it or not! According to QuitNet...
Time Smoke-Free: 105 days, 5 hours, 41 minutes and 51 seconds
Cigarettes NOT smoked: 1263
Lifetime Saved: 9 days, 15 hours
Money Saved: $393.75
The cravings have really subsided in the last month, although I still find myself wanting one pretty badly a few times a week. I like feeling good, being almost migraine free, being able to breathe well and not using my inhaler. Incentive enough to not go back to it.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
Thanks for the bump. It took me able a year to quit, I reduced the amount over a 2 month period until I stopped buying. Since I stopped buying I bought maybe 3 packs over a 7 month period. Myom smokes and is bum one from her once a week or so and occasionally have one when I was drinking. As of 1/1/13 I totally stopped and it hasn't been difficult. No cravings whatsoever. It took a year but I really believe I'm done now

Hey, guys...awesome to see everyone TRYING...even those of you who are (temporarily) relapsing. I always admire people who take on tough challenges, and this is one of the toughest because what you're fighting is yourself.
I was actually a prevention specialist many, many years ago. Tobacco prevention was my emphasis. As I have gotten older (& wiser I believe ), a lot of the other things I used to teach/warn against don't bother me, but I still hate cigarettes. I have personal reasons for my dislike as well. Now I will not hold it against, treat you differently, or be hateful or anything, but if I see someone trying to quit I am going to do all I can to encourage & help you.
Good luck to all of you. I am sending strong, positive vibes your way that you can break this addiction. And if you don't or don't want too, that's alright too. I still have mad love for you! ;D

I quit smoking the Sunday of Bonnaroo 2010. Did fine for over 2 years.. until 2 weeks ago. I had been craving a cig more and more for a few months and I finally gave in one drunken night and bummed like 5 over the course of the night. Smoked pretty regularly the next week or so. I'm now back in line and haven't smoked this week. Here is to hoping I can do better this time.
