I have a 2 door jeep wrangler (bright orange with a bunch of stickers, I feel like I'll probably be pulled over and searched along the way, its not subtle at all haha), taking the back seat out and putting in an air mattress and a battery powered fan. Thinking of putting the soft top on so we'll have the option of open air. Getting an easy up to go over the car to get some shade. This seems pretty legit to me as it will be sturdy, will have a lock, and occasional air conditioning access. Am i missing something? Are tents really the way to go? First time festival-er over here.

Be aware that your "occasional access to air conditioning" will be spreading exhaust fumes to your immediate neighbors.
Other than that having the ez up over the jeep for sleeping should work fine if you're comfortable stretching out that way. Many people prefer no tent at all and sleeping open air under an ez up. If you plan on spending the morning awake and not sitting in your jeep you may want to consider another ez up to sit under when you're "prepping" for Centeroo for the day. If not make friends with your neighbors (it's pretty easy) and hang with them under their shade. Believe me shade is important. The sun is usually pretty brutal.

Drive safe and think of your neighbors, like quacker says. I've slept in the car (without turning it on) and it's fine until the early morning when the sun comes out.
My tent collapsed on Friday last year and I ended up sleeping the car the two nights that followed. I had a giant UV reflective tarp that I threw over the entire thing. I would wake up from the heat at about 7-7:30 which is no worse that an unprotected tent. It was more comfortable than a tent that's for sure

One year I had my dad's car that was like inbetween a minivan and an suv. Not sure what you'd call it but it had a big open back with lots of room and I was able to put an air mattress in there. That was awesome. Really comfy.
In 09, the tent i brought was not waterproof and that thursday brought plenty of rain. Needless to say, all of our campsite was trashed and could not be used. We had to spend the whole weekend sleeping in the jeep wrangler the car rental gave us. Accept our back was totally filled, so we couldn't even recline our seats back at all. That was one of the biggest obstacles i've ever faced at roo. We actaully tried to leave and go to a hotel, bt nothing in the area had a vacancy, and there was no way we were getting out of our pod anyway. So that, WAS the worst ever.
Last year, I started the weekend off sleeping in the tent, but i forgot to bring blankets, and the nights ot pretty chilly. So, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night I slept in the car. It was great. So it all depends on how comfortable you make it for yourself.

I slept in my car one year, in 2008, and yes, it did get hot in the morning, but at night it was fine... the night it rained (Friday, I think), I got the best sleep at Bonnaroo, ever... slept all morning with my feet hanging out the window, waking up when it started back raining, and rolling up the window. I think I got up after 1 pm, and was surprised to find out that Sharon Jones had just started.
It can work, but I've had better sleeping experiences consistently in a tent or canopy.
I feel like I'll probably do it, something will inevitably suck about any camping situation. Plus I don't actually own a tent and need the money for other things like food and gas. And as for the heat I'm from southern louisiana, the hottest and most humid place ever. I went to summer camp in south texas with no air condition in June. Tennessee heat shouldn't be anything new. My real concern right now is having room for the other stuff (clothes and what not) when the back is taken up by the sleeping set up.
To quacker: I would never want to irritate the neighbors haha, and plus I don't want to waste gas. It would just be nice to have that option if I'm absolutely dying.

2008 I would come back to came, run the AC for 15 to 20 minutes to cool the vehicle off, then I would lay on a pallet of blankets in the back and slept pretty good. 5.5 or 6 hours each night. 2008 was also a very mild year temp wise.
2010 I took my parents SUV, but couldn't sleep in the back to I took a tent too. The only thing I ever did in the tent was change clothes, as it was way to friggin hot to sleep in the tent. I would get back to camp and run the AC for 30 to 45 minutes to cool off and charge my phone, sleep for 2 or 3 hours, wake up, run the ac for 10 minutes, sleep for 1 or 2 hours, repeat.
2011 I used an easy up with reflective tarps covering the top 6 feet of all 4 sides. I slept on a military style cot under the easy up. I slept pretty well last year, averaging 5 or 6 hours of sleep each night.
If you have to use your vehicle for AC, be very mindful of your neighbors. Only run it in short shifts. I got away with this in 2010 because I was at the tail end of a row, with nobody camped behind me. Just dont give anyone carbon monoxide poisoning.

I think that's great. And you may be able to get away with it if the setup is OK. But you'd be surprised how many people wouldn't even consider it a problem if their exhaust pipe was right next to somebody's tent window. I ran my car a few times for about 20 minutes in 2008 to charge my cell but the exhaust pipe was facing out to the open air.

I'm not really able to wrap my head around an air mattress fitting in the back of a Wrangler, but I know the new jeeps are much bigger than the old ones. If you can in fact fit one in the back, I would definitely put the soft top down on the jeep(open air) and the EZup over the top. I think that would actually be a pretty sweet sleeping set up. Maybe throw a mosquito net over the back of the jeep too (mosquito presence seems to change year to year). It seems like the big problem with sleeping in cars at Roo is good ventilation and the humidity. Your only issue will be storage space since most people use their car as their closet. Again, not really sure how much room you're working with, but it sounds doable. You should put the air mattress in the back before you leave, and just see how much room you're left to work with.

Unless you have a 2008 and up Unlimited, I don't see how you could fit an air mattress back there and even then, that's tight. The soft top should be nicer than sleeping in a hardtop car. Especially if you have a brown top, absorbs less heat. But a tarp or EZ up would block a lot of direct sunlight. If you're set on sleeping in the Jeep, all the windows should be cracked but shaded to try and minimize heat and maintain air flow. Hate for you to microwave yourself. Still I'd sleep out of the truck, on an air mattress, generously covered and shaded. Tents are optional. A couple of $10 battery powered fans go a long way as well.
In past years, I've brought a tent and an EZ up. Usually one to two days in, my back is KILLING me from sleeping on the ground. I alwasy end up sleeping in my cars for the last night or two and then think that I was an idiot for not doing it before. Usually I just crack the window and it's really comfy. Less hot than a tent in my opinion, I am always able to get in an extra hour or so of sleep in my car.
I too have been thinking about sleeping in the car this year on an air mattress as I have a Chryslter Pacifica, so I'm pretty sure there'd be room for the air mattress. I've tent camped before and it was ok, but am thinking we may try sleeping in the car this year with the easy up and tarps covering part of it. Will likely do a "trial run" of the possible set up in the next month of so to see how it works out!

a few of my roo buddies swear by sleeping in the car. i was thinking about trying it out this year because they both always sleep an hour or two later than i do
This thread makes me think of my buddy, Dusty, who introduced me to Bonnaroo in 2006. From 06-09, Dusty literally slept UNDER the van and truck we drove down to the farm in alternating years. He swore by it - saying it was nice and cool - and somehow managed to do it without waking up and whacking his head every morning.

^that's the greatest thing I've ever heard. I have an '11 jeep wrangler, so it's bigger than the old ones, widened the wheel base to make them safer. I feel like if I take out the back seat and push the front 2 seats up it will be people sized, and if not I can scrunch my legs a bit. I'm not dead set on the air mattress, also considering egg crates with sleeping bags. Fans, soft top, EZ Up, and UV front window cover for sure.
Haven't quite figured out where I'll put my stuff. My group is going in 2 cars, so we'll (hopefully) be next to each other (hoping we don't get separated going in) and that will create a more like communal living space. I might just use a trunk and put a lock on it and leave it out under the easy up as like a table or something. Someone could still steal it though, but they would have to have bolt cutters and i doubt those are allowed at 'roo...

Zero-Gravity Chair = Sleeping bliss at 'Roo. Set one of these up under your EZ-UP, with a couple of tapestries blocking the rising sun. Clip a battery operated fan (Easy find at CVS/Walgreens/etc.) to the side of the chair to blow in your face. Boom. I sleep from 5 or 6 am 'til about 10 am with this setup, without fail.
