I will never understand how two bands that get middling, hour long day slots at the Great GoogaMooga wind up getting prime late night slots at Bonnaroo.
Maybe it's a conscious effort to have a bit of a letdown in some areas this year so that last year's stuff looks better by comparison and next years can look even better. Just confusing all around.
Despite New York having a strong claim to being the best city in America for both food and music, the top festivals for each always seem to happen elsewhere.
New York never had its own Coachella or South Beach Food and Wine Festival, but it's finally getting closer.
While not on the same scale as those events, the people behind Tennessee's Bonnaroo and San Francisco's Outside Lands festivals are bringing 75 food vendors, 35 brewers, 30 winemakers and 20 bands to Prospect Park in Brooklyn for the Great GoogaMooga.
amNewYork spoke with Kerry Black, co-founder and partner of festival producers Superfly Presents.
How did you put the Great GoogaMooga festival together?
When we started Outside Lands, we looked at what we could do to differentiate it from other music festivals. We decided to highlight food and wine. It was a hit and started getting us into the world of doing great food offerings. It was a natural progression to do something more centered around food, hence the Great GoogaMooga.
Is it harder to produce a festival in NYC than other places?
In some ways it's a little easier because we're based here and can take the train to Prospect Park. There's also so much here in terms of production and resources, versus bringing everything to a farm in Tennessee.
Where did the name come from?
Our style is to think of really unique names that are fun to say. We got Bonnaroo by looking through old records and finding a Dr. John album called "Desitively Bonnaroo." This time, we found a song called "Great Googa Mooga" by the New Orleans R&B singer Lee Dorsey. We looked it up and found out it was a term from the 1940s or '50s that meant "Holy Cow!" or "Great Scott!"
What aspect of GoogaMooga are you most looking forward to?
Probably the Hamageddon area. It will have its own feel, a hard-rock theme. We'll have a bunch of pork-related vendors, including an area where you can order flights of bacon.
Do you see this as an annual event?
Definitely. We look at this as being one of the premier food festivals in the world for years to come.

Hey guys, so something came up and I no longer make it tomorrow therefore, I have two tickets for Saturday I am willing to email in PDF format! I will send them to the first person who PMs me their email address. I don't want these tickets to go to waste and I know someone on here will be able to use them!
saw that too, but there was no way of knowing that they would give a full refund. imo this was very generous of them and they really didnt even have to do it. they could have given a partial refund or tickets to next years fest. its just great to see that superfly is out there to make people have a good time, not to make money off people (the money is just a bonus). as a GA ticket holder i only had two main problems with saturdays event. the first was the fact that the "googacards" werent working and they were selling "drink tickets" but the line for that was over 2 hours long. my other complaint is that i feel they overbooked the event causing long lines EVERYWHERE i was only able to get one food item for the fact that i hated waiting on lines, which was the lobster roll which was fantabulous! only other thing i stood on line was for beer, unfortunately I wasnt able to try any of the craft beers due to the tremendous lines for the drink tickets. ok im done venting now lol.
i got plenty of beer, just not the craft beer. my friends got food from at least 7 different vendors but i did not want to stand in line. i went for the music, and the music is what i saw. the jazz band was great, they came into the crowd and one of them actually took one of my friends by the hand and started dancing with her. the roots were just magical, i cannot say more than that lol.
if superfly was in it just for the money, there would have been no reason for them to refund the 250+fees to all the extramooga customers, they could have just kept the money. they wanted people to have a good time, but since many of them were inconvenienced slightly they gave them a full refund, this was something that they really did not have to do but did it anyway.

I had a fantastic time and got the food and drinks that I wanted. The lines were long and after 3 o clock getting food would take a little while but I got my stuff out of the way earlier when it was less crowded.
It was something I'd definitely do again (for free....if I paid money for a ticket and had to deal with the lines and prices then I'd skip for sure). This was definitely about making money (don't get me started on the ridiculous beer tent prices....the beer stands around the festival were much more reasonably priced) but I also felt it was a good thing for all the local food establishments.

It's also about making sure their first year wasn't deemed a failure and leaving a bad taste in people's mouths. As great of a gesture as it is to refund the people who paid (and it is an amazing gesture) it's also about protecting their brand and hoping that they can keep this going for years (and make more and more money).
i got there at about 3 so there was no time there when i saw a short line. also itrainmonkeys, did u go on sat or sun? i heard they fixed a lot of problems on sun, like having more food, and making all beer cash instead of the dumb buying beer ticket thing.
Oh well, to the victor goes the spoils.
