So I make my own beer and I would like to take some to Roo. I put it into mini kegs, which don't require atrificial carbonation. Minin kegs are basically just gallon-size cans of beer that don't need a tap system. Do you think this is legal at Roo? I have read other places that regular kegs with taps are not allowed.

You ask this on Get Satisfaction?
I would say they'll probably take them if they find them, but someone else may have a different answer. Like I posted on Get Satisfaction, you may want to look into buying some plastic bottles for homebrew. You can find them on the internet pretty easily.

Thanks, that was helpful. I may just risk it and bring my mini kegs. I just bottled my chili pepper infused lager and named it "Chili Pepper Hops Magik" in honor of one of the headliners. I am open for suggestions on other beers.
The worst that can happen is that they will dump them out and I will be left with the empty keg.
About the resale issues, isn't it easier to sell a couple cans of beer than to sell cups from a keg. I don't really understand that reasoning.

Actually, the worst that can happen is that they will take your beer kegs and all, but if Whoreshack has gotten them in repeatedly, you should be okay.
As far as the resale issues go, they limit the amount of cans you can bring in, so you're less likely to have extra. If you tried to bring in a large amount of cans, they would take some of them too.

They could keep your keg too if they find it, but I've definitely heard of people smuggling their homebrew in minikegs packed away under their stuff. The reason I think they'll keep your keg is, from what I've heard, the security team (usually volunteers?) put EVERYTHING confiscated in a big stash, and have quite the afterparty during the post fest cleanup with the other fest volunteers. I think you'll be fine sneaking it in though.

We had three or four Heineken minikegs in the refrigerator of our RV in '09. Guy doing the search opened the door, looked right at them, and promptly confiscated the glass jar of pickles next to them. Troo story. I say go for it.

I'm excited to read this thread. I just started brewing after Christmas (APA was good, and Amber Ale is fermenting, but ready to be bottled), and I will be making a Bonnaroo specific beer to bring along. I'm thinking IPA. I've read that you can bottle in used plastic soda bottles, but I would be worried about UV rays.
Have you tried that? What about brown plastic root beer bottles?

I don't know if I'd trust the seal on a used pop bottle, but it might be worth a shot. Brown plastic brewing bottles are about $27 for 24.
I'm thinking of a mild IPA fermented on some mango or maybe even honeydew and a hint of pineapple. I want a sweeter than normal IPA, but nothing too fruity. While typing this I started to consider some banana or coconut (get some electrolyte and potassium replenishment while at roo!). I have a million ideas and probably won't act on any haha
You could also get a party pig that will hold a little over 2 gallons. I was thinking of brewing this (5 gallon all grain) APA and bringing some. 9 lbs Maris Otter 1 lbs Vienna Malt 1 lbs Crystal Malt 10°L 1 oz Cascade - added first wort, boiled 60 min 1 oz Cascade - added during boil, boiled 10 min 1 oz Cascade - added during boil, boiled 5 min 1 oz Cascade - added during boil, boiled 1 min 1 ea Fermentis S-04 2.0 oz Orange zest - added during boil, boiled 10.0 min 1 oz Coriander crushed - added during boil, boiled 10 min Whirlfloc - added during boil, boiled 15 min
ooooooh, you guys are making me thirsty. I brewed for a while, then put it away just this past year. Gave the kit to my brother at Christmas, and hoping he'll make us a Bonnabrew. But I did get glass in one year, in my old car's fold down bucket seats. wrapped them in towels, and since the bucket seats made a pocket, and literally ALL of my gear was on top of the seats, I dont think the security guy even made the connection that there could be something in there.
I say, bury the kegs in your gear, and don't wear tie-dye when you go through the security line, they dont search as much when you appear less wookish. Good luck!

I'll admit that I haven't gone all-grain yet (still extract and then I'll do partial for a while due to funding) so I'm not too educated on the tastes and results of curtain grains and hops, but that recipe does make me thirsty and wish I had a summer beer in my hand

just bottled up a batch of "Caribou Slobber" from nothernbrewer.com and i bottled one in a propel bottle (seemed pretty sturdy and with a good seal) so in about 2 weeks ill be able to comment on reusing plastic drink bottles. as far as the UV exposure goes... as longs as its in the cooler and not just sitting out in the sun, i dont think its really a big issue
