What is the policy on running the motor to keep the battery from dying after charging the cell phone? It seems like this would be the most common way of charging phones, but wouldn't the exhaust waft all over people's camps? What if I brought some sort of PVC chimney device... ?
Just do it when no one is around. We got in pretty quick last year so we still had a full tank of gas and ran it every day for a bit. I took a 2 hr nap one day in the truck with the AC on. We didn't go into Centeroo until about 4pm every day and our neighbors left way before that so that is when we'd turn it on. Another day we all turned them on at the same time by agreement. It also seemed like we'd get in earlier in the middle of the night than our neighbors so we'd turn it in then too if need be
Just chat with your neighbors and be respectful and everything will be cool.

There's multiple other ways of keeping a charged phone throughout the weekend (i.e. solar charges, extra batteries, etc.), so don't feel as if you are locked into using your car. Like you said, your car exhaust will go to nearby camps and can cause some serious health issues for people who are sleeping nearby, so it is absolutely 1000% percent essential that you know your surroundings before you turn your car on.
Yes particularly if your exhaust is aimed right at someone's tent please be courteous about running your car. If there is some space around your car and other people It would be OK to run it occasionally.
You know they sell some pretty good battery operated phone chargers takes like two aa. My friend also found a pretty sweet solar powered one on amazonhttp://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_4_16?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=solar+powered+phone+chargers&sprefix=solar+powered+ph%2Caps%2C159(you know you will have lotsa solar at roo). Especially since you were considering going through the trouble of extending the tail pipe with pvc pipe just use that ambition for finding more evviromentally sound means... good luck
It probably depends on where you are in the camp too. We were on the end next to a road so we only had to worry about neighbors on each side of us and that was it. It probably would have been different if we were in the middle of a sea of tents.

In 2010, I was camped near the front of a large truck...it's exhaust the other side, but these TX dudes had to run it....it wasn't the exhaust, but the heat from the engine that would drive me out of camp.
Be courteous....camp should be a place to relax after a long night.

Just don't overdo it. Everyone realizes people want to charge their phones or sit in the a/c. Ask your neighbors that are around if it's ok and respect them if they say no. You don't want to be "that guy". Especially "that guy who ran his car every flipping morning and almost killed Fred".

This! There are so many ways to charge your phone that don't require running your car! Please look into one! It can really put a damper on your day if your campsite smells like fumes. As for an AC nap...you're coming to 'roo of your own choice. You should expect a hot nap. I've been very understanding in the past of neighbors running their cars, but it's honestly quite bothersome.

my car doesn't need to be running to charge my phone. i just turn the key one click and it'll charge my phone. gotta love honda... my old car used to charge my phone with or without the key in the ignition, god bless that volkswagen...
and my battery won't die either when doing this. :-)

there is very little use for a phone at roo anyways. half the time mine never worked (AT&T).
but if your phone is completely dead and you fully charge it in your car every day, your car battery probably wouldnt even notice. as long as you dont have an old crappy battery, there should be no need to worry about it dying because you never turned your car on.
or just bring jumper cables (which you should have anyways) just in case
We got lucky and they parked us where we camped in front of our car and the people behind us were parked up against us and camped behind their car, so we were able to run the car as much as we wanted without bothering anyone. We would run it about 1-2hrs a day to get some A/C and charge phones. However, if there are tents behind your car DO NOT do this.
I sat in my van for a few mins everyday it's just nice to feel some a/c even if it's only for a few minutes. I had no complaints I even asked my neighbors to get out of the heat and join us.
I don't like to have my phone charged to call the outside world, I like to have my phone charged for pictures and videos. I turn my data off and don't make any calls. I'll be investing in a battery pack this year. Sick of trying to do the car thing.

I bought one of those jump start batteries, use it at Bonnaroo, football games, even around the house. It has a lot of juice for charging phones, air pumps for mattresses, fans and more than once we used it to jumpstart dead batteries. It's like having a portable cigarette lighter. You might end up parking where running your car wouldn't make too much difference or you might end up with somebody's tent next to your exhaust, it can be kind of random.
make sure your car battery is good. 2 of us have charged phones, played radio, played cd's and never ran the car. i might start it once or twice the whole time just to see if it will start. and i always make sure it starts before all the neighbors leave. i'm usually the one that has to jumpstart someone else.
From what I've seen it is pretty common to chill-out in the car AC at least once during the weekend. Just use common sense. If your muffler is pointed at the guy's tent next to you make sure everything is good before you pass out in your comfy car.
