Hello friends! I'm looking for the most effective way to clean and sanitize my camelbak bladder without using bleach. I'm wondering if I should put it in the dishwasher, but that doesn't seem like it will be thorough enough. Should I soak it in something? Do I scrub it with something? If so, what?
I always just run water through everything, hang it to dry for a bit, then throw it in the freezer. I leave it there until I use it again. The freezer will prevent any molding until I use it again.

dish soap, and elbow grease. i dont recommend the dish washer
the freezer is a good idea, although i usually just rinse it out again before i use it and have never really had a molding problem. Although i just bought a new one and its made of something different and im still trying to get rid of that annoying rubber taste.
the freezer is a good idea! after last year i dried it out completely and stored it flattened with 2 dry washcloths in it that i swapped out after a few days to make sure it was totally dry. i blew out the tube, but if anyone knows a better way to clean out the tube let me know!
I cleaned mine before I stored it, but I used it recently for hiking, and it could have been mental but it didn't taste right. I think I will throw it in the freezer this time! Good idea, Phi. I'm also wondering about cleaning out the tube, anyone have pointers on this?
th3int3rn3t, what have you used to scrub it in the past? Just like a sponge on a stick kinda deal?

walmart sells a cleaning brush kit for the tubes, just mix some baking soda and water into a paste, it gets the smell and taste of last years roo out just fine

I usually just rinse it and splash it around in soap water until I think it's clean or I get sick of doing it. (I rinse it out before I use I again, so I don't really worry much)
I agree with the above. Hot water and dish soap. Shook it up good and ran it through water for a long time to make sure there was no soapy residue left. I use my camelbak pack all ear so I just keep the bladder stowed away in a dry place.
Camelbak has cleaning kits that you can purchase. I usually just run soapy water through mine really well and let it dry. Once it is dry I store it in the closet. Never had a mold issue or funky taste.
if you dont want to buy the whole kit, REI (or im sure another sporting goods store) carries just the cleansing tabs. throw one in, shake the water around for a bit...i have some for my retainer/camelback, so i just use those...

I'll second that the freezer works great. We hang ours upside down over the sink for a day with a papertowel in the bottom then throw it in the freezer. If you never let it sit with or without water in it and store it in the freezer you shouldn't have to worry about cleaning it too much.
I think I might try the baking soda thing to get the new plastic-y taste out of it.
