I was going to post this in the General film discussion thread, but that thread looks pretty devoted to current year movies (presently 2012).
I just finished watching Apollo 18. I wasn't going out tonight, I was hungry for some Scify/horror and the trailers for this movie made it look intriguing. Rotten Tomatoes averaged it a 25% and panned it "A boring, suspense-free Paranormal Activity rip-off that feels long even at just 90 minutes."
So I settled in to indulge in a suck-fest that would kill 90 minutes of time that otherwise could have been spent doing something more responsible or productive. I Put on the movie, nestled into a couch corner, cracked a beer.
In my opinion this movie didn't suck in the least. Yeah it had a few leaps in logic and a couple of plot holes, but it did not seem to me to deserve the visceral hate that has been piled onto it.
Look, I don't have poop taste in movies, in fact my taste (not to sound too pompous but...) is pretty refined. Michael Haneke's Funny Games (the 2007 English language version, which is entirely identical to the German language version made 10 years earlier except for the language spoken) is as wonderful a family film as is Darren Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream is a side splitting coming of age romantic comedy. I know movies people. Fellas if you haven't seen it and got a first date coming up, Requiem will totally get you laid!!
So my Roo'ster friends if you've seen Apollo 18 and thought it sucked. Why? Also what would you recommend I watch instead in the Scify/horror genre?
A few reasons why Apollo18 is bad... as with most found footage movies, how are you seeingb the footage? Also, it was rather poorly acted, the film quality was jarring and not in a good way, and it was actually quite boring. I think I gave it somewhere around a *1/2 rating, and I think I was generous.
Will not lie, I like the first Blair Witch, and the first two Paranormal Activities are guilty pleasures, but there is only so much you can do with the genre... also, Cloverfield was decent too and took the style to more grandiose scale successfully. However, I have not seen a founf footage horror/scifi flick I would necessarily call great, and considering how overtapped that market is, I don't see one coming.

Well, someone found it But yeah it doesn't make any sense at all and totally can't be applied to Apollo 18. Now that I'm a bit more sober and think about it it's pretty laughable where Apollo 18 is concerned. In fact I did laugh out loud when I thought about it for 2 seconds! I guess just having the seriously lowered expectation going into it, I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't any where near as horrible as I'd been expecting.
Also I'm a serious space freak and fascinated by all things cosmological and astrophysical. I spend more time on NASA's websites than just about anywhere on the net. Just the fact that something is taking place in space automatically gets a bump from me.
