Someone else had made a thread about this last year for Chicago, and it helped me so much in planning my Lollapalooza trip
This time around I'm going to Los Angeles for Hard summer music festival (haven't pulled the trigger yet, but leaning towards making that decision by this weekend) To really make this trip worth my while I want to take 2-3 extra days over there to explore LA. That sounds fun, in theory, but when I start to think about it, I can't really think of anything specific I want to do in LA. I've always been big into movie production so I definitely want to hit up hollywood and maybe do a studio tour. Other than that, I've got nothing.
Anyone here been to LA or live there? What are some "must-do" things? Any "must-eat" places? Any cool venues, bars, or night clubs I must check out? What cool touristy, or unique, things are there that I must do?

The Standard Hotel on Sunset in West Hollywood is where I stayed. It's a really nice hipster type hotel that is fairly priced. LA has some of the best comedy clubs. Check out Largo. The night I went Louis CK, Aziz, Sarah Silverman, Doug Benson, and Dax Shepard all performed. It you have the time and are in to nature you may want to check out Griffith Park and it' observatory. Also, eat a hot dog at Pink's and swing by Venice Beach. But, I was just a visitor like you. I'm sure you will get some great ideas from others here.
I went to LA in 2004 for a very specific reason: To go see a taping of The Price is Right. And I did, and it was glorious, and a friend made it to Contestant's Row. Definitely one of the most amazing experiences of my life. It probably wouldn't be as exciting now that Bob Barker does host anymore, but may be worth checking out if you really want to. (And I mean REALLY. It requires sleeping on the street in Culver City.)
We were poor college kids so we did lots of free things and lots of driving around in the five days we were there. We went to a taping of Jay Leno, which is free. We ate at In-and-Out burger and also at Whataburger (highly suggest both). One day, we did Hollywood and went down the Walk of Fame and saw the sign. But that was about it there. Another day, we went to Venice Beach and down the pier.

Ooooooh I like the Leno taping idea. Price is right is no my thing though. I wonder if conan tapes in LA too? or is he in NY? We actually have Whataburger in FL. I'd like to check out In n out burger though. I admittedly love fast food.
Awesome! I just got back from that area for Coachella. I’d never been to California prior to that.
You’re going to have a blast. The weather is gorgeous and the people were a lot nicer than I dreamed them up to be. I flew into LA with the pretense that I’d need a bagillion plastic surgeries in order to “fit in”, but that was just my obvious ignorance about the people and areas that we stayed at.
Hm. Things to do/try...
Food - the MOST important, IMO.
-As for food, everyone raves about In'N'Out burger. It truly wasn't that amazing. But I was glad to go to say I did. I think the burgers were pretty tasty, but the fries, which are an important staple at a burger joint, left me disappointed.
-You HAVE to try the Mexican food there. We stayed with my aunt who lives in North Hollywood and they took us to their neighborhood Mexican restaurant. It was so fresh, tasty, and SO not the greasy, sloppy stuff we have here out east.
-Sushi is also a must. We ate sushi in Studio City with some of my boyfriend's classmates from grad school. It was prettttty tasty.
-If you’re looking for some major guilty pleasure/wicked fast food there, check out Del Taco. Its super cheap and they’re everywhere.
SIGHTS I am not much for cliché tourist traps, so we skipped the walk of fame mumbo-jumbo and drove up Mullholland drive and took a lot of pics, making sure to take a picture of the Hollywood sign in the background. After we drove down the hill and cruised through Hollywood.
I would have liked to have driven around Beverly Hills and drooled over the overpriced homes, but we were in LA for less than 24 hours.
Also, my cousin is going to UCLA on a diving scholarship, so we had lunch with her in Santa Monica after walking up and down the pier. There’s a ton of great shopping just off of the pier, I wanna say on Third Street?
I wish I had time for a taping, like y’all mentioned. Like I said, we didn’t have much time in LA itself. I look forward to another outing there.
And a helpful tidbit, bring lots of extra cash, valets are more common that public parking. I even saw valet service for a PET STORE. In.Sane.
Have to eat at an In N Out, get a double double animal style. Double double is double meat and double cheese, animal style is not on the menu, but trust me it is just plain awesome on a burger.
You must check out the Getty Museum. It is Free! but you have to pay $8 to park. It is up the 405, but totally worth it!
Go to a comedy club.
Griffith Observatory is cool, will take up one day.
Pink is famous for its Dogs.
Venice beach is a must.
3rd street promenade is a cool place to shop.
Laggy, I lived on and off for 3 years in LA. How are you getting around? Rental?
Sushi-If you can get a reservation, which you can, but having one is a must to get a seat, at Katsuya in Studio City(there is one in Hollywood, but I did not got to that one) you will have the best sushi ever! You will pay for it, but it is so good!
Italian-There are a lot of good place to eat in LA and I sure a better place for pasta, but for size and portion you can not beat, Alejo's presto trattoria Italian restaurant in Marina Del Ray. soooo Good, my mouth is watering just typing this.
Greek-Taverna Tony in Malibu, then swing by the Moonshadows for a drink and a possible Mel Gibson sighting. Seriously though, Taverna Tony has some amazing food! "Just like Ya-Ya makes!" The drive up the coast to Malibu at sunset, over looking the Pacific, at sunset, is breath taking!
Southern Home cookin'- Venni Mac's M&Ms soul food in Century City at 5496 West Centinela Avenue. Go early, when it is still light out, because if you get there late they might be out of food or you might get shot. JK. I could walk to here from my Apt. and it was great to be able to have home cooking with in walking distance. Yes, they do run out of food.

Thanks for the suggestions guys I'm going to do as much as I can I'm going to be there a late thur night til a tues afternoon. Doing hardfest fri and sat
For that monday night I'm going to enter to be in the crowd for every latenight show in LA and hope in get into at least 1.
sunday night i may try and do a comedy club. Any suggestions where to go?
On sunday and/or monday during the day I'm going to visit hollywood. Also I'm a big fan of street art. I hear Museum of modern art has some good stuff. And Banksy has some peices scattered around LA, I'm going to try and check 1 or 2 out if theyre not out of my way
And I'll definitely take your food suggestions into consideration
Some advice for the latenight tapings, if it still works the way it did back in 2004:
You will probably get a ticket if you ask enough ahead of time. BUT they give out more tickets than capacity, so you will have to get there early and stand in line to ensure you are able to get inside. And with Jay Leno, he didn't tape at night but during the afternoon. So you will probably need to commit to just one show and plan on spending several hours of your morning/afternoon there.
On the fun side, you don't know who the guests will be until about a week beforehand. We managed to get Ben Affleck and A Perfect Circle.
edit: things may have changed since then... just wanted to give you my experience in case it changes your plans!

That is some awesome guests. I'd die if I got to see APC in such an intimate setting.
I checked a few shows and it looked like you could only request about 2 months in advance so I'll try back later. I'm going to try for Conan, Kimmel, Fallon, Leno, and Letterman (in order of importance to me) and choose between whichever ones i can get into. In the end I might end up choosing whichever has the best guests.

If your into anything from Brainfeeder I would highly suggest arriving a day earlier or leaving a day later so you can check out low end theory that goes on wednesdays at the airliner, they always have great shows. Plus having hard summer going on there sure to have some good surprise guests, and its only $10 can't beat that! Gonna be at hard summer too, just 14 more days! Stoked!
sunday night i may try and do a comedy club. Any suggestions where to go?
Groundlings Theater.
It is basically the Harvard of Comedy schools and every day they have various shows of improv and sketch comedy. They are absolutely the best with Second City in Chicago. I'm not 100% what their schedule looks like but I highly recommend the Thursday night alumni improv shows. You truly never know who will show up, but you are pretty much guaranteed to see a couple big time names show up.
I was there last year and saw ASSSSCAT(improv show) at the UCB Theater it was incredible. All of their shows are cheap and the room is incredibly small, you can even sit on stage if that's your fancy. The theater is in Hollywood check the schedule you might be lucky enough to see a huge name in a very intimate setting. If you are familiar with Doug Loves Movies or Comedy Bang! Bang! they do weekly shows there.
I was in the Groundlings. Just classes. Is it going to be unscripted, like curb?
They have different types of shows, so check out their schedule. A couple nights are all improv others are all skit comedy ala SNL. Most shows are a bit of both.

Sorry Bacon, I'm aware. I was just quoting Arrested Development
