Ok guys this is my first roo this year and i have seen where people setup their flagpoles to mark their tents and i was wondering if anyone had any insight on how to make this work?
2011 was my first bonnaroo...amazing experience!!! I bought a painters extension pole, screwed two eye bolts through the top, attached a flag to that. It extended to 16 feet high. I zip tied it to the corner pole on my ez-up and buried 5 inches in the ground. This probably isn't necessary but I had a folding shovel and plenty of shots by the time I did this so I was on a mission. The advantage to the painters pole is that in case of inclement weather all you have to do is twist the pole and lower it right down to 8.5 feet...which is not much taller than the ez-up.
We're going to make it taller though and include guide wires for stability. We'll also make some sort of base that we can park our RV on top of.
I followed this plan last year, except I used slightly thicker PVC. Held itself up fine with no guide wires, just make sure you drive it into the ground good. Worked great, and everyone around us loved it. It was visible from a good distance.
I made the one on the poorvin website (link already posted) a couple of years back. We ended up duct taping it to the roof rack of our suv to hive some additional stability without guide wires. Worked pretty good, but we didn't need the flag to find our camp. Haven't used it at Roos since.

Just wondering what you guys (gains and heavier) used as flags. We're planning on flying a standard perpendicular style flag (well not standard, it's gonna be oversized) rather than the top to bottom one. Any tips on modifying the top?
Use Schedule 80 PVC. It has thicker walls and is hence stronger. It does have smaller inner diameter though so it may be harder to plant in the ground. Maybe you can do a small Schedule 40 base that will be completely plated in the ground. If you need any help with force calculations hit me up. School is over as of today and I will be without mind numbing engineering problems during the summer.
When I built mine I glued a T fitting at the top and added to vertical pipes so that I could hang 2 flags. We had a nascar flag and a pair of undies that one of our crew took as a souvenir from a first night hook up. It was funny to see it flying all weekend.
Couple thoughts after doing this. Try to cut an angle at the bottom piece, we had a hard time getting the PVC pipe into the ground because it was so hard. The angle would have helped. Also bring a hammer and a piece of wood, we had one person hold the base so it was perfectly straight, another held the board over the top of the pipe and one person beat it into the ground. We used through bolts to hold the joints, but it was very difficult to match up the pre-drilled holes. I would either skip this step or use a self tapping screw.
Lastly we ran a piece of duct tape around the pole and connected it to our roof rack for additional stability. Since it was close to the car we wrapped the lower section in foam pipe insulation to protect the car finish. If you chose not to plant the pole close to your car then skip this step.
IF you only have one flag you could probably get away with a painters extendable pole, which is light and easy to setup.

In '10 I took an extending tent pole and attached the flag to it using key chains. I then zip tied it to my EZ up. I was a little nervous of it's stability but it stayed up the whole time. I'll be doing it again this year.
We used a large extending pool brush pole - about a 15-footer. We let our pirate's flag, size 55 granny bloomers and the tiki pennant soar for the entire time.
