Rooers, I'm bored at work and I am feeling generous and nostalgic since I hovered over this site for months the first time I went to Roo and found priceless info on here....
Here's some useful tidbits of info and experiences I had which will help you have a much better time...
1) LOCK YOUR SH$T UP! This is #1 on my list because my gf and I were victims of theft last year and it could have potentially ruined our trip. Most people there are great but when you pack thousands into one space there's going to be a few a$$holes too. We had a backpack jacked overnight from our site with keys, wallet, cell phone, signed t-shirts from rev peytons big damn band, beef jerky, etc. We were dumb, drunk, and left one bag outside the tent. Our fault, but when we woke up it was gone and it put a damper on the rest of the trip. I had an extra set of keys, money etc in the other bag so we survived. Also, if you do lose something go straight to the lost and found because those guys are AWESOME there and super organized. We got the wallet back with license and credit card, but no cash. So not a total loss. Thank god for the extra set of car keys, which leads me to point 2...
2) BRING AN EXTRA SET OF CAR KEYS, and keep cash or an extra credit card on you in case of an emergency.
3) Make friends with your neighbors, but don't let your generosity be your demise. Smart people pack smart and bring what they need for themselves, its nice to share and help people out in need, but make sure your neighbors reciprocate and that you're not taken advantage of. I ended up running out of propane from letting too many people use my grill.
4) Freeze your water bottles. It saves room in your cooler that ice would have taken up and you are stocked with ice cold water the whole trip while keeping the rest of your stuff cold. We froze 40 bottles and still had plenty of room in our large cooler.
6) Get a caravan or screen room for the early mornings and afternoons so you can rest out of the sun. Inside your tent will be like sleeping in satans mouth after 6am so bring a beach blanket and some shade. We thought we'd be ok with a beach umbrella... the ground is nearly impenetrable and the sun moves, bring something bigger.
7) Bring some highlighters and color in your schedules in importance order. Make sure you see your top bands, try to see the second tier, and forget about the rest. Don't drive yourself crazy about being on a schedule. Try seeing something new and don't burn yourself running from stage to stage. YOU WONT SEE EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO... and it's ok.
8) Bring about $200 bucks for beer and food inside centeroo, and for corn, you cornheads, haha
9) Sunscreen or die. And sunglasses.
10) WOW, this should also be #1. Pay special attention to 1,5,and 10. BABY WIPES!!!!!! The toilets are 125 degrees, and you are going to be sweating your ass off while you are doing the deed. This is by far the worst part of Bonnaroo, especially for the big dudes like myself. Baby wipes are portable showers, keep them in your pack at all times. Feeling clean is (at least for some people) one of the most important things to do at roo. Also, immodium was a life saver for me. Pop two of these in the morning and one in the afternoon and you will be locked up for most of the day. I know this is the grossest point on the list, but poopin' at roo is really the only thing I dreaded the whole time. Well that and the 14 hour drive and 6 hour wait in line.
11) 5 Hour energy shots. I don't do white, but I drink a whole lot, and doing so too early in the day will result in missing shows at night. Bring 5 hour energy for your legal and somewhat healthier corn supplement to keep you going through the night. Also, don't get wasted at 3pm. Drink a bottle of water between every 5 beers or so. The last thing you want to do is ruin your trip by feeling like crap and falling asleep.
13) Comfortable shoes are key. I had the Croc slip on canvas shoes last year and they worked so well, its all I wore.
14) Battery powered fan for your tent.
15) The final tip I will leave you is this. People come from all around the country for this event, and from all different walks of life. Be open, be accepting, but don't be a d$ck. Seriously, people are paying a lot of money for this, travelling far, taking off of work, and are there for, ultimately, the same reason as you... to hear good music, have fun, and get away from reality for a few days. Don't cut in lines, don't act like a drunk a$$hole and start fights, don't leave your garbage all over the site, don't try to leave early and make people move their tents unless its an emergency, don't bum cigarettes the whole time, they're expensive, don't push through crowds and knock people over, don't take advantage of intoxicated people, don't be intoxicated to the point where other people need to take care of you..... basically, make it a fun environment without stepping on other people's toes. The only rules at Bonnaroo are the ones you make for yourself, you can basically do anything and get away with it, but just because you can doesn't mean you should.
