Hi Everyone,
I just found out that one of our campmates that goes to Roo with us every year was injured last week in a motocycle accident. He is okay but has a broken clavical, scapula and some broken ribs. He thinks he can't go to Roo now. He does not feel very well now, but in two in a half weeks I think he might be feeling better. He is able to walk just fine but he thinks being in close proximity to all the other folks in Centeroo that he will get bumped and jostled somewhat when he needs to be carefull and allow his bones to heal. I believe his doctor has released him to only drive to and from work but that's it. Is he a candidate for Access Camping and special access in Centeroo? I went and read as much as I could at Bonnarooo's website but I'd like to know if anyone else has some guidance they can give me on how I can help make it possible for him to still go this year.

Sorry to hear that! If i were you i would contact bonnaroo about access camping and explain your situation if you are set on going with your friend but 2 weeks is not a long time to recover from an accident like that. I'm sure the nurses on the board will have some input. If i was in your friends situation i probably wouldn't go, the heat, walking, and just being in the crowd at a show could be SUPER uncomfortable.

Thanks ya'll. I will ask them. I see a place at the Bonnaroo site where I can contact the Access people to make requests or ask questions. I will let my campmate make the decision if he wants to go. If he doesn't have to walk as far, and if we help him with his camping needs then maybe he'll change his mind about going. Thanks!!!
Hey. Sorry to hear about your friends injury. Access camping is definitely an option for him and will decrease on the crowding. There is a separate entrance for access which means that he won't have to deal with the crowds going through the arch. That being said he might want to wait until just before the Roo to decide. I don't know how long a drive you've got but long distance traveling with bone injuries can be brutal. (shattered shoulder and elbow myself, yikes) and depending on which side he's hurt on positioning could be awful.
The Access program has a platform for people who can't stand for long periods of time if that helps. He still would need to get through the crowd to get to it though.
He may also have concerns about sleeping on the ground, the heat, etc. I don't know if it's possible but he might feel better about it if an upgrade to an RV or something were possible. That way if he were really having trouble he could go crash in the AC. Let me know if you have any other questions I can answer and I'm glad to hear he's okay.

I have a disabled son and was looking at their website just a few days ago to see if he would have access. There was an email address on the site that was for a request for wheelchairs and such. It looked like they treated disabled/injured guests quite nicely. Good places to view shows, etc... I would email ASAP. There wasn't a price listed for wheelchairs, so they might even be free, which would be awesome. Anyway...hopefully your friend can enjoy Roo even with an injury.
I've worked with people with various disabilities for my entire career and I have to say that Roo does a fantastic job with their Access program. I can tell you that wheelchair/scooter rental will not be free and as losinmyrooligion said e-mail as early as possible if any requests are going to be needed.

I am glad your friend is alive. Being a motorcycle rider and having been hit by a truck on a bicycle I can empathize with his injuries. Standing, sitting, laying down nothing is comfortable.
But I had to keep going. And by moving around I overall felt better, mentally if nothing else.
Sounds like your buddy "high sided", went over the handle bar landing on his shoulder. Ouch.
I laid my bike down in a curve about six weeks ago and bruised some ribs, and I am just now getting to where I can sleep comfortably. My bet is he is not going to feel like going in two weeks....it takes time for the ribs to heal.....hurts like hell just to breathe. Cough or sneeze.....pure agony. Plus, if you get carried away, you can further injure.....doesn't take too much to puncture a lung which turns a painful injury into a life threatening one.
Wish you guys well.....let him off easy if he is uncomfortable about going....always next year..
Two weeks doesn't seem like hardly enough time to feel better from getting thrown around like that. The walking alone is a trek everyday it is miles and miles in heat. I did have experience with a friend who broke her foot weeks before Roo in 2010. She was healed enough to wear a "boot". It was dirty and gross, but it did get us into the front photo pit (the access area for hardcore injured fans- there is a sit down are also farther from the stage) for Phoenix which turned out to be one of the best shows that year. stay positive, but don't count on it.
I've never Roo'd with broken bones, but in May of 2010, I had two abdominal surgeries to remove veins that had retracted into my left kidney. I love Bonnaroo and several of the shows I saw in '10 were some of my festival favorites. With that being said, I DEEPLY regret going to Bonnaroo 2010. We ended up camping in BFE and with only three weeks of healing under my belt, I was in dismal agony by Friday afternoon. I had to stay in the back or side of all shows, because when I got bumped it would surge pain throughout my abdomen. However much it sucks to miss a Roo (I haven't missed one since I began attending, but I think I can imagine the disappointment), I would not go with an abdominal injury ever again.
Sorry if this post is Just a rough memory.
Edit: I hope your friend gets well soon, physical pain of that nature is such a sad existence. Best wishes!

Bonnaroo is tough on the body even if you're healthy and in good shape. Make sure you guys seriously consider whether or not your friend will be ok attending.
