When the festival is about to kick off, has anybody heard when they are opening the gates? I want to be able to have my camp set up before Thursday morning like I did last year. It adds sooooooooooo much having sleep for Thursday.
Same as last year.Gates open Wednesday night at 8PM I believe. That is CDT for you time zone shifters. I will stress again though that Bonnaroo will tell you what time the gates open. The Tennessee highway patrol makes the ultimate decision on that though. If traffic is not backing up before the gates officially open then they will open at the designated time. To the best of my knowledge though this has never happened. Traffic always backs up enough before gates open that the THP makes them open them early. If you get there early enough and I mean like one of the first people in line early enough you will be in before 8PM.

In 2010, arriving Thursday morning was a nightmare, so we got there super early last year. Not sure what time the gates were officially scheduled to open, but we tried maybe around noon and were told to come back at 6. We went back at 4 or 5, went down Asbury Rd. past the junkyard to something and up and around to the East gate on Bushy Branch. There was a line coming from the North but absolutely no one coming our way, which seemed very strange. We were immediately waived into line by the nice boys in blue, got through the checkpoint quickly, and were setting up in no time. It would have been ridiculously quick if one car in our party hadn't been pulled over for a full search. Still very, very quick though.
I think our camp for 2011 was 45 or 46, Johnny Lawrence or Mr. Miyagi. Somewhere over there, East of an RV area and amongst some wonderful trees! The shade was pretty light, but very clutch in the morning. I had previously been led to believe that there were no wooded/shaded areas. Would have been nice to be closer (I like to go back to camp for beverages, snacks, rest, etc.), but it was MUCH better than the NE corner spot we got in 2010, past the pond - slightly shorter walk and the glorious morning shade.
My tentative plan is to arrive around the same time this year, to try to be set up before dark on Wednesday. I'm comfortable using GPS to take back roads but not yet sure which gate I want to shoot for.
